Local YMCA Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Kosciusko Community Young Men's Christian Association - better known as the YMCA or simply the "Y" - is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week. Tuesday also will be proclaimed YMCA Day by Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins. Since its inception, the YMCA has grown in building size, membership and programs. A charter for Kosciusko's YMCA was applied for in 1961 from the national YMCA.In 1963, the Y started a campaign to raise money for a building, raising $130,000.In 1965, the YMCA building was opened. Before the building was ready, Y members met off-site.Businesses, like Lake City Bank on Market Street, opened their doors for the Y groups. "It was just started," said Y executive director Tom Garland, "(because) they were just looking to have recreation for this town." The YMCA board had approximately 24 past presidents, who usually served one to two years apiece.

Schools Concerned About Timing Of Tax Distributions

School board officials are concerned about receiving their June 30, 2007, tax distributions because the county assessor's office hasn't submitted the "in-between" reassessments to the auditor's office, let alone to the Department of Local Government Finance for approval. County assessors had until July 1 to submit the new assessments to county auditors for review.County auditors had until Aug.1 to send the documents to the Department of Local Government Finance. The county's assessed values are used to approve budgets and certify tax rates. Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr.Robert Hayworth and Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott approached the county council Thursday. "We understand the assessors are working hard on trending. It's a tedious and time-consuming process," Hayworth said about the process of taxing a property based on its marketable value."My fear is that it may take longer than we're being told and that pushes back our June 30 distribution.

Wawasee Wins A Wild One In Triple OT

SYRACUSE - Wow. That's what almost every person was saying as they left the triple-overtime thriller between the Whitko and Wawasee boys basketball teams in Syracuse Thursday evening. The Warriors came out on top of the classic Indiana Hoosier Hysteria barn-burner, outlasting the Wildcats 87-83. However, it did not always look like the Warriors were going to leave the game with a win. "I was disappointed with the way we came out," said Wawasee coach Phil Mishler."I don't think we were ready to play.We learned a very important lesson tonight." Whitko jumped out to an early lead as John Woods, Jeremy Coble and Alex Frantz led the Wildcats to an early 6-2 lead and never looked back. In the first four quarters, Wawasee held the lead only once. That lead came at the 29.8 mark in the first frame when Kyle Lantz grabbed a steal and netted a basket to put the Warriors up 9-8.
