Bonding Process Moves Forward For Justice Building Project

Bonding for the Kosciusko County Justice Building expansion project took another step forward Tuesday when the Kosciusko County commissioners approved a resolution regarding the approval of the issuance of the bonds. Rich Hill, of Baker & Daniels, Plymouth, presented the resolution to the commissioners.Baker & Daniels is serving as bond counsel to the commissioners. The resolution states the commissioners approve the issuance, sale and delivery by the Justice Building Corp.of its first mortgage bonds for an amount not to exceed $23.5 million to finance the construction and equipment for the project. The title to the project will be approved and accepted by the commissioners, under the resolution, from the building corporation once the bonds are redeemed and retired.

Jury Seated As Grevenstuk Trial Resumes

Timothy Grevenstuk is back in Kosciusko Circuit Court to face a charge of arson causing bodily injury. Grevenstuk, 17, is accused of setting the fire that destroyed the Leesburg Grace Brethren Church in July 1997. Grevenstuk's first trial in May was declared a mistrial because a potential witness allegedly threatened the daughter of a juror. The jury for this trial was selected by noon Monday and included an alternate juror as a precaution against another mistrial. Kosciusko County Prosecutor David Kolbe said the court took steps to protect against another mistrial, but he could not comment on the precautions.Picking the alternate juror is the first time it has been done in the time Kolbe has been prosecuting attorney, he said. Kolbe said that during opening statements he said what he believed the case would show. "It's a two-part trial," Kolbe said.First, he will attempt to show that the church fire was not accidental but was an incendiary fire.

Roe will join William Reneker in the probation office and will primarily serve Kosciusko Circuit and Superior Courts with some work with Kosciusko County Court.

Amy, a seventh-grader at Lakeview, won the school's geography bee Jan.29. 25 Years Ago February 22 1976 City Police Capt.Ted Ward has returned this weekend from a week-long school at the FBI Training Academy at Quantico, Va.The school sponsored by the FBI for local enforcement officers covered how to handle domestic disturbances. Ward says he hopes to set up training sessions here for other members of the Warsaw department in the near future to share the techniques he learned at the academy.

10 Years Ago    Construction crews have nearly completed work on the first three floors of the Winona Hotel. The first phase of the renovation includes 13 two- and three-bedroom condominium units on the first three floors. They should be ready for occupancy next summer. The building, built in 1888, at one time featured running balconies off all the rooms. These will be back in place, offering views of Winona Lake on the south side and on two-thirds of the building on the “back side.”25 Years Ago     Checking Out - After serving more than 10 years, Judy Hughes, a member of the Warsaw Public Library, will officially step down next month from her position. The Warsaw Community School Board is expected to name a replacement in the near future. She is the wife of Thomas Hughes, who is president of Zimmer Inc. 50 Years Ago     Tom Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Brown, of Silver Lake, returned recently from Harjavalta, Finland, where he had spent the summer as a representative of the Youth for Understanding teen-age exchange program. Before returning home, Tom spent several days in Helsinki visiting in the home of Tapio Tilto. Tapio spent last year in Warsaw. 75 Years Ago   Warsaw will be the site for the Indiana Industrial and Volunteer firemen’s 1938 state firemen’s convention, it was definitely assured by Fire Chief Charles Frush. At a regular monthly meeting recently Leolin (Bud) Moon was appointed representative to the  state board meeting to be held at Fort Wayne at which plans will be made for the holding of the convention here in June.

Geiger was presented a plaque for his services by the county council recently. Attempts to present the award during the past few months have been subverted by prior engagements. Former council president Norm DeGood presented Geiger with the plaque.50 Years Ago     Mike Valentine and Kerry Anglin received the 1963 Ruth Rodeheaver Thomas drama awards recently after the final performance of the Warsaw High School senior class play, “The Silver Whistle.” Carl Burt, superintendent of schools, presented the awards. Winners are nominated and voted upon by senior class students and faculty members. The students are chosen on the basis of talent in dramatic activities, scholarship, citizenship and character.    75 Years Ago   Mrs. E.W. Parker, Mrs. Maurice Aker and the Misses Ethel Bratt, Bonnie Bratt, Ruth Hubler, Maude Felter, Lucille Fisher, Olive Bloom, Frances Lewis and Devere Brant motored recently to South Bend.  They were guests of the South Bend Business and Professional Women at a lecture delivered by Judge Kelly, judge of the juvenile court of Memphis, Tenn.
