ROCHESTER – Paul W. Hurst, 49, passed away at 1 p.m. Jan. 2, 2013, in Warsaw. He was born Nov. 15, 1963, in Huntingburg, to Clarence and Mildred Bleemel Hurst.

10 Years Ago Following a flag presentation by Boy Scout Troop No. 819, the council recognized four men who participated in a rescue effort July 24. Warsaw Police Department Patrolman Joel Beam, assistant fire chief Mike Rice, firefighter Travis Rowland and Stephen M. Rudisel were honored for their efforts in removing Robert C. Lenson from his van when the vehicle was driven into Center Lake this summer. 25 Years Ago Following a tenure of more than 35 years in the financial field, Leo M. Pfister will retire from Mutual Federal Savings Bank in Warsaw on Oct. 31. Pfister joined Mutual Federal (then called Warsaw Federal Savings and Loan Assn.) on Jan. 1, 1976. He is a vice president of Mutual Federal and chief operating officer of the Warsaw Branch. When Leo leaves the local bank, he will leave it in capable hands, as his position will be taken by Max Courtney, who has been working beside Pfister learning the ropes for the past couple of years. 50 Years Ago A yearling stallion, Tin Star belonging to Bill Carter of Warsaw, recently won first place among 15 entries at the New York State Fair, Syracuse, N.Y. Named Reserve Junior Champion, which included under three-year-old stallions from various states, Tin Star was sired by El Dorado, owned by Fred Olds, of Warsaw, and the Dam was CarterÕs Madam EE-DA-HOW. The Appaloosa colt has won many firsts in various horse shows. 75 Years Ago After visiting for several days in New York City, Stuart Van Dyke will go to Syracuse, N.Y., where he is enrolled as a graduate student in journalism at Syracuse University. Mr. Van Dyke has been granted a fellowship at that institution. Miss Sara Van Dyke and Miss Wilda Mellencamp will  go to Greencastle where they will be enrolled as second year students at DePauw University. Mr. and Mrs. I.C. Van Dyke of Winona Lake will accompany the girls.

10 Years Ago    Square in shape, 13- by 13-inches. “The Ancient Shape of Man” offers 85 black-and-white large-format photographs by John Eric Hawkins and poetry by IPFW professor Shari Messenger and student Nate Benyousky. Hawkins travels coast to coast in search of images. He captures everything from close-ups of crystalline ice forms to seemingly endless vistas. There are photographs taken from 1986 to 2002. The photo book is financially backed by the Village at Winona.25 Years Ago     Described as someone who is “always willing to help another person in need,” Jack Phillips has been selected as Pierceton’s Outstanding Citizen. Phillips was honored recently at the annual Pierceton Community Chamber of Commerce banquet. A lifelong Pierceton resident, Phillips is a volunteer fireman, a member of the Lions Club, and was one of the first volunteer emergency medical technicians when the community EMS service was formed a number of years ago. 50 Years Ago    Mrs. Emerson (Virginia) Moser and Lozier “Bozo” Helvey, who are neighbors at Lake Shore Drive, Winona Lake, made believers out of the skeptics who contend you have to go north for northern pike when they landed five lunkers recently. The two were spin casting west of the Little Eagle Dam on the west side of Country Club Road on Moser’s property, using daredevil lures. The fish weighed in at just under 30 pounds and the largest which Mrs. Moser caught, was an eight-pounder. 75 Years Ago    Fire, starting from a bolt of lightning during the height of a recent electrical storm, totally destroyed a large barn on the S.E. Liggett farm, north of Liberty Mills. The farm was tenanted by George Fitch. Estimating damages of $3,000, observers reported the barn burst into flame at 8:45 o’clock immediately after the lightning struck. Neighbors and spectators drawn to the scene were instrumental in saving some of the livestock. S.E. Liggett is the father of Ralph Liggett, of Warsaw and Oswego.

10 Years AgoMiddle school students in Kosciusko County will be able to learn about job opportunities available locally at the first-ever Middle School Career Fair April 17. Sponsored by the Workforce Development Group of the Warsaw Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce’s Education Steering Committee, the career fair will give middle schoolers an idea of what will be expected of them for careers that don’t require a four-year college education. Approximately 1,300 middle school students will attend the career fair during the school day and will be brought one school at a time to the Home and Family Arts Building at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds.25 Years AgoBiomet president Dane Miller was inteviewed  recently on the Financial News Network’s “Catching Winners Early” show. Pearce addressed the group on “Federation Challenges in the Space Age.” Mrs. Hardman is news and information chairman for the Indiana Federation.
