WINONA LAKE - Last year, more than $40,000 was raised in Kosciusko County for the Indiana University Cancer Research Center. As a way to say thank-you, Indiana University School of Medicine Senior Associate Director Mary A.Maxwell spoke at The Boathouse Restaurant Wednesday to the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund committee and guests to explain what the money has helped the Center do. Part of that $40,000, she said, went to pilot project funding. As an NCI-designated cancer center, I.U.Cancer Center is encouraged to stimulate interdisciplinary and collaborative research.Last year, nearly $300,000 in pilot project funding was allocated by the Cancer Center director, all but $50,000 of the funding coming from philanthropic resources.

County Studies TIF For Dreyfus Facility

A joint meeting of three government entities convened Thursday to move along legalities concerning the economic development area for Louis Dreyfus Agricultural Industries LLC. The county redevelopment commission, development commission and council approved a resolution and an ordinance to create the tax increment financing district just south of Claypool along Ind.15. When an area is designated as a TIF, the taxes normally collected in that area are used to pay the loan, or bond, secured for improvements.The improvements can be buildings, roadways, sanitary sewer lines and similar infrastructure.The low-interest bond or loan is traditionally guaranteed by a government agency. Lisa Lee, an attorney with Ice Miller, explained that the redevelopment commission's resolution pledges between 80 and 85 percent of real and depreciable personal property taxes will be used to pay off the revenue bond.

County To Accept Grant For New Cops

With some sacrifice and rearranging of budgets, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department will be able to accept a Homeland Security grant after all. The grant will help add two more officers to the department.The Kosciusko County Council approved acceptance of the grant at its meeting Thursday. Last year, the county council approved for the KCSD to apply for the grant money.However, at budget sessions in August, the council decided not to accept the grant money due to budget constraints.The council said if the county hired any more employees, no county employees would be able to receive the $300 salary increase the council approved for 2004 to offset the increase in employee insurance.
