Suspects' Arrests Bring Leads In Other Crimes

OSWEGO - The Kosciusko County Sheriff Department's arrest of two men for stealing from an Oswego laundromat Wednesday has led to leads in several recent crimes. Booked into Kosciusko County Jail Wednesday morning were Christopher Delbert East, 19, of 409 EMS T26 Lane, Leesburg, and Bradley Donald Smith, 19, same address. Both were charged with theft from a coin machine and held without bond. KCSD deputies responded to a call from an employee of Oswego Laundry reporting two men stealing from a coin-operated soap dispenser at 7 a.m.Wednesday.Upon arrival the deputies apprehended Smith and East. In searching the suspects' car police found a Motorola radio with a Warsaw Holiday Inn employee's name on the back. The radio led police to connect Smith and East with $7,000 in damage that occurred at the Holiday Inn on Sunday. The suspects allegedly damaged the facilty and stole the two-way radio and a portable stereo.

Judge Mulls Fisher's Bond

Whether Jason Fisher will remain in jail or be released on bond was taken under advisement Friday and will be decided as soon as possible. Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed said he wants to review the cases cited by Kosciusko County Prosecutor Charles Waggoner and court-appointed defense attorney, Michael Miner, in support ot their arguments. Miner said bond should be set in the burglary and theft charges against Fisher, 23, of Millersburg. Those charges stem from a December 2000 theft of more than $100,000 worth of vehicles from Rice Ford in Warsaw.Three other men already have been sentenced for their role in the burglary. Fisher also is being held on a charge of murder in the Jan.15, 2001, shooting death of Kathy Vroman, 48, of Milford. Fisher did not appear in court for the hearing.

Bond Denied For Fisher

Jason Fisher will remain in jail while he awaits trial on a murder charge. Fisher, 22, of Middlebury, testified briefly during a hearing Wednesday in Kosciusko Circuit Court regarding whether he could find employment if he was released on bond. Judge Rex Reed denied Fisher's request for bond to be set, saying that the burden of proof was on the defense to show that the offense should be bailable.Reed ruled the presumption of support for the probable cause affidavit was strong based on evidence presented during the hearing. Reed previously denied defense requests for a change of venue in the case or to choose jurors from outside Kosciusko County. During Wednesday's hourlong hearing, the court also heard testimony from Fisher's minister, Milford Town Marshal Dave Hobbs and Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department Detective Travis Marsh.

Guilty Pleas Entered From Indictments

Two of six people indicted in 2001 by a Kosciusko County grand jury have pleaded guilty in Kosciusko Circuit Court to charges pending against them. Kurt Owens of Silver Lake, admitted taking money collected through South Central Emergency Medical Service for victims of the Sept.11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department received a Crime Stoppers tip in September 2001 indicating there was a possible mishandling of money by Owens, the then-director of SCEMS, and monitored the situation for a short time before the investigation became full-blown. SCEMS conducted a fund-raiser after the Sept.11, 2001, tragedies and collected more than $6,000 for the National Police and Fire Disaster Relief Fund. When Owens was questioned about a receipt for the money, he allegedly provided false documentation, including a nonexistent address for where the money was to be sent. Sentencing on the theft charge is set for June 2.
