Richardson, son of Jesse J. and Wanda M. Richardson, Pierceton, has completed the Field Radio Operator's Course. During the eight-week skill training with Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendelton, Calif., he received instruction on the installation, adjustment and operation of the tactical radios used by Marine Corps ground 2nd aviation units. He studied voice radio procedures, communications security and the use of encryption (message "scrambling") equipment. 50 Years Ago July 16 1957 Lew Goshert, Bob Caywood and Curtis Garber, all of Warsaw, and Fritz Wolferman of Milford attended the major league baseball double-header in Chicago between the White Sox and Cleveland Indians. 75 Years Ago July 16 1932 The Delta Theta Tau sorority of Etna Green held a beautiful initiation service for Nellie Mikel at the home of Marjorie Mason. Mikel is a graduate of Etna Green High School and Indiana University, and is a member of the honorary sorority, Phi Chi Theta. After initiation they adjourned to the beautiful flower garden where bridge was played with prizes going to Olive Poulson and Mary Vernette.

10 Years Ago June 27 1999 Warsaw's police chief now has a second job -- as safety and security director for Warsaw Community Schools. Steve Foster, recently appointed as chief of the Warsaw Police Department, will begin his duties immediately. The Warsaw school board approved the position. 25 Years Ago June 27 1984 The Tippecanoe Valley State Football champs of 1979 participated in Mentone's Egg Festival Parade. Charlie Smith, who was also the grand marshall of the parade, marched with members and coaches from that team. 50 Years Ago June 27 1959 Mr. and Mrs. LaMar Reichert, son and daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Reichert, Bremen, leave soon for Christian service in refugee camps in Germany. The younger Mrs. Reichert was Miss Adele Bertsche of Pontiac, Ill., before their marriage May 30. 75 Years Ago June 27 1934 A surprise kitchen shower was recently given for Mrs. Fred Hartman, who before her recent marriage will be remembered as Miss Charlene Arnsberger, at the home of Mrs. Paul Vermillion. The honored guest was the recipient of many lovely and useful gifts. Previous to the shower, two tables of bridge progressed, with first prize being awarded to Miss Crystal Davis and second prize to Mrs. John Wood.

The program, titled "Dominica: The Nature Island of the Caribbean," is to be presented by Bart Culver of North Webster, who traveled to Dominica on behalf of the Indiana Nature Conservancy. 25 Years Ago July 3 1984 For the third quarter in a row, wages of workers in Kosciusko County increased slightly while statewide average earnings were up as well, according to the Indiana Employment Security Division. During the period of October to December 1983, Kosciusko County workers earned an average of $323.80 weekly in all areas of employment, while manufacturing workers earned $406.72. 50 Years Ago July 3 1959 A total of 266 students have enrolled for the first summer term at Manchester College, according to the registrar, Maxine Domer. This total includes 212 full-time students and 54 part-time for a total increase of 23 over last year's enrollment. This represents a nearly 10 per cent increase over a year ago. 75 Years Ago July 3 1934 The cosmetics department of the Schultz-Illinois-Star Co. will continue operation in Warsaw. Definite assurance of this was given recently by F.P. Wagner, vice president of the company, in a letter to Clarence Maish, president of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce. The chamber of commerce has offered to assist the industry but it does not guarantee the payroll. The payroll increase is about $2,400.

10 Years Ago Court security officers at the Kosciusko County Justice Building recently completed a marksmanship course at the Warsaw Rifle & Pistol Club. Gordy Nash and Robert Morrison of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department were presented with certificates noting that they were distinguished experts in the National Rifle Association Marksmanship Qualification Program. The 13-week course included weak hand, strong hand and multiple target practice. 25 Years Ago This is a recipe from the Spotlight Contest for Chocolate Eclair Dessert. 1 box graham crackers; (2) 3-3/4 oz. boxes instant French vanilla pudding mix; 3 cups milk; 8 oz. carton frozen whipped topping; 1 tub chocolate ready to spread frosting. Line bottom of 13 x 9 baking pan with whole graham crackers. Beat pudding mix and milk until smooth; fold in whipped topping. Spread half of pudding mixture over graham crackers. Place another layer of graham crackers over pudding. Top with remaining pudding; cover with layer of graham crackers and then spread frosting over the crackers. Chill 12-24 hours before serving. Sherrie Reed, Mentone 50 Years Ago Forrest Croop, director of Warsaw High School adult education classes, reports that of the 16 courses offered, dressmaking, typing and speed reading have attracted the most applicants. The adult classes got underway Monday night. A total of 387 persons have enrolled in the 16 classes. Classes will be held on two additional nights. 75 Years Ago Mrs. Charles Walker has returned to this city after visiting for several months on the West Coast in Washington and California, and at Oklahoma City. Mrs. Daisy Coblentz, Warsaw, left for Phoenix, Ariz., where she will spend the winter. She was accompanied by Arthur Coblentz and son Max of Liberty Mills.

Whitko Rolls Lady Norse 70-41

WINONA LAKE – Whitko got off to a relatively slow start, but the Lady Wildcats outscored Northfield 46-18 in the middle two quarters to secure a 70-41 win over the Lady Norse Saturday. The Three Rivers Conference game was played in the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College. Junior Aly Reiff led the Lady Wildcats with 23 points, and Brianna Cumberland hit four three-point shots and finished with 14 points. Jennifer Reiff added 10 for the Lady Wildcats.

10 Years Ago A 5-year-old Warsaw boy is being viewed as  a hero after pulling a 3-year-old from the water at Frantz Park in Logansport. Tara Smith, of Warsaw, said she and her family were returning home from a trip to Indiana Beach when they made a stop at the park. After playing with the four children in her group, Smith said she made a head count of the children and noticed that Evan Ousley, one of her twins, was still in the water and a youngster was under water in front of him, with only his arms showing. Evan grabbed the child under his arms and walked backward, dragging the coughing and sputtering toddler from the water. 25 Years Ago While some 7-year-olds are still riding their bicycles with the training wheels intact for security, as well as balance, one area boy has long ago given up his pedaling in search of more challenging two-wheelers. Jeremy Greene, Warsaw, placed fourth in the American Motorcycle Association state moto-cross competition last year, during his first year of racing. He started learning at the age of 4 (with training wheels), and now has about 20 trophies commemorating his success during the 1986 and 1987 season.   50 Years Ago Marilyn and Marcia Mikesell have a list of favorite places to show Renate Schaefer on their last trip together before she returns to Germany. The girls met last summer when the Mikesell family toured Europe, and this past year have shared a spacious bedroom-study in the Mikesell home at Winona. During Christmas vacation Renate went with them to Florida. Marcia will be the only young lady of the house when fall comes and her sister Marilyn departs for Hanover College.75 Years Ago Among the 700 students who received degrees at the 63rd annual commencement exercises at Purdue University were four from Kosciusko County: Ruth Anna Louise Grimm, Warsaw, home economics; Leonard Paul   Helser, Warsaw, mechanical engineering; Harry Stone, Syracuse, mechanical engineering; and Harold Arlis Strauss, Winona Lake, mechanical engineering.
