Triton C.C. Set For Now, Future

Triton cross country coach Kurt Kreft is a man in a very comfortable position right now. His boys and girls cross country teams begin sectional action on Thursday at Logansport. Both teams have to be considered a favorite to secure one of the top three spots to qualify for the regional. His top three runners, Mason McIntyre, Reghan Kreft and Shelly Miller, are all underclassmen running like seniors. As a matter of fact, Kreft has one only senior on either team, Liz Miller. She has scored for the Trojans in every meet this year, but she will be replaced by a strong group of eighth graders. On the boys side, everyone will return, and Kreft will add an eighth grade team that won the conference championship this year.

Liberal Angst Isn't Selling For Air America

The New York Post reported this week that all-liberal, all-the-time radio network Air America is fixing to file for bankruptcy. The network denies the report, but I must say I wasn't the least bit shocked when I read it. Frankly, I was surprised the network has survived this long. Air America Radio, billing itself as a "full-service, progressive talk radio network," went on the air March 31, 2004. At the time, I gave it a year. See, I'm just not sure that kind of blather plays all that well, even in big, blue markets - the only markets that carried Air America. Apparently, most liberals don't ascribe to acerbic nonsense no matter how far left it leans. This does not seem to apply to conservatives, however, because no matter how acerbic Rush Limbaugh is, he still gets ratings. In fact, there are several popular conservative barking heads out there.

Lots Of Room For Improvement

It's funny how things evolve. Take government, for example. Generally I'm for less government. It seems the government is everywhere and into everything. Does this mean that we need no government or that all government is bad? Of course not. We very much need to be governed. And we very much need a federal government. Think of it this way.If there were no federal government, there might still be places in this country where women and blacks wouldn't be allowed to vote. There would be no interstate highways. There would be no Social Security. No Medicare. No national monuments or parks. No national security. Point is, there are lots of reasons we need federal supervision. Our founding fathers knew that and provided a most innovative and progressive way to carry it out - a representative government. A government that grew from the people. It's the evolution of our government that bothers me.

Fiscal Fiction In D.C.

Fiscal fiction. That's what always gets tossed around in Washington around budget time.If it wasn't so serious, it would be amusing.

Expanded Drug Testing Proposed For Students

Proposals reviewed Thursday by Warsaw Community Schools could lead to further drug testing of students and employment of a police officer at the high school. The ideas were reviewed during a public meeting at the high school Thursday night. No decisions were made. Much of the discussion involved expansion of student drug testing beyond athletes to include students driving to school and those in vocational classes. Similar programs at other schools have been adopted and upheld in court on the grounds of personal safety, officials said. Random drug testing currently involves about 500 student athletes. With the addition of drivers and vocational students, the total number would be close to 1,000 students - nearly half of the high school student body. Under the proposal, student drivers testing positive would lose driving privileges for nine weeks on the first offense.A second offense would result in a one-year suspension of driving rights.

Former Mayor Explains His Vote On WCS Referendum

It’s a “first” for our school community … and even though the  Yes or No Referendum question on the May 5th ballot does not contain the word “children” … make no mistake about it … our “kids” are on the ballot … years’ worth of kids … and whether we like it or not … so are we.

Errors Cost Squires In TRC Loss

Manchester Squires second-year head coach Eli Henson realizes one of the perils of starting two freshmen and a sophomore is consistency. His Squires outscored their hosts, the Wabash Apaches,  32-20 in the second half, but ball security miscues plagued Manchester in the first half putting them in a hole they couldn’t climb out of in their 58-53 loss in Three Rivers Conference (TRC) boys’ basketball action Friday night.
