Remember When 1.9.2013

10 Years Ago    A fiber optic project for Warsaw Community Schools is underway, with plans to complete the project in three phases. The project, installing fiber optic lines to ultimately connect all Warsaw schools, is expected to cost approximately $400,000 once all phases are completed, said Dennis VanDuyne, WCS technology director. Washington Elementary, Warsaw Community High School, Edgewood Middle School and the administration building already are connected, thanks to a grant the technology department received approximately four years ago.25 Years Ago  Professional golfer Denny Hepler, of Warsaw, who played on the PGA tour the past two years, has accepted a position at Stonehenge Golf Club as golf professional and teaching pro. Stonehenge is in the process of expanding its facilities to include an 18-hole course and a new clubhouse. Memberships are already being sold for the new club, which is expected to open in early June.50 Years Ago   The 1-cent postage stamp, a nearly forgotten relic, was back in large-scale use today. That’s because it takes 5 cents worth of postage now to send a letter first class and 8 cents worth for air mail.  Warsaw Postmaster Frank O. Rarick said today that sales of 1-cent stamps here skyrocketed from an average of 2,000 Monday.  At Winona Lake, Postmaster Phil Laurien reported his sales also jumped, making a special order of additional stamps necessary.75 Years Ago    Two Winona Lake youths, Rowan Howe and Grover Sims Jr., took their annual polar bear plunge into the icy waters of Winona Lake a few days ago after chopping away 11 inches of ice. The former plays football with Manchester College as center on the varsity. Sims is a student in Warsaw Senior High School. Last year the Winona Polar Bears numbered five when there was only a film of ice on the lake. This year three of the bears hibernated when they saw the 11 inches of ice on the lake.

Remember When 9.1.2011

10 Years Ago Although the 1950s-era Bell 47G OH 13 and Hiller make for an interesting display in Gerald Romine's back yard, he'd much rather have the helicopters on view elsewhere. The perfect place for the single-rotor choppers would be under roof at the Bell Aircraft  Museum, according to Romine, who serves as that board's president. The current facility is chock full of Lawrence D. Bell memorabilia, illustrating the life and career of the Mentone native and aviation pioneer. There's no space for indoor exhibits - yet. But expansion plans are being explored. 25 Years Ago After 17 hours of fighting erratic temperature changes, Brendt Smith completed one of the most extraordinary feats in Kosciusko County lake history when he finished swimming across 52 lakes at 11:18 p.m. Monday. The accomplishment is believed to be a world record. His attempt to establish a world record for swimming the most lakes in 24 hours was in honor of his 52-year-old father, John, who died of cancer three years ago. An estimated $2,000 was raised including about $1,700 from contributions taken at the lakes for the American Cancer Society. 50 Years Ago ItÕs a big, new wonderful world opening for little Sandy Gibson, The Times Union Calendar Girl for September, as she enters the Madison school for the first time to enroll for kindergarten. Sandy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gibson of Silveus addition, was among the 3,031 boys and girls who registered this morning in Warsaw Community Schools. For Sandy, who will be 5 years old in October, it was a moment to long remember as she visions 13 years of school life en route to that coveted high school diploma. 75 Years Ago Ink had hardly dried on the paper Saturday afternoon when Robert Hall, deputy county clerk, had recovered a valuable white gold wrist watch for which he had advertised as lost that same afternoon in The Warsaw Daily Times' classified section. For certain and quick results, use Times' classified section.

Huntington Survives Grace Scare With 75-71 Overtime Win

HUNTINGTON - After Huntington's men's basketball team defeated Bethel College Saturday by 11 points, the Foresters became the team to beat in the Mid-Central Conference. When the new poll came out Tuesday, it backed up that statement as Huntington was ranked No.3 in the country, the highest the Foresters had ever been. Tuesday night, Huntington attempted to back up that ranking against the Grace College Lancers, but it found it more difficult than was expected. The Lancers took the Foresters to overtime before eventually falling 75-71. With six minutes to play Tuesday night, the Lancers found themselves in a 55-55 tie.Shannon Brown scored on a layup and Ryan Bricker followed up with a three-point play to give Grace a 60-55 lead with four minutes to go. Huntington came back with four consecutive points to cut the lead to one point before 5-foot-9 Matt Moore went over 6'4' Brodie Garber for a layup to give the Lancers a 62-59 advantage with two minutes to play.
