Valley Girls Beat Triton Cagers
AKRON - Valley's Holli Jackson was a late scratch Wednesday night against No.7 (1A) Triton with a bad back.Luckily for Viking head coach Gary Teel, the likes of Danielle Howard and Lela Rohrer, who started for Jackson, stepped up to break the back of the Trojans 57-33. Triton took its first and only lead in the opening seconds of Wednesday night's contest when Lindsay Stuzman hit a three-pointer at the top of the key to put the Trojans up 3-0. Valley's Kara Kramer, who signed her letter of intent for Eastern Illinois before the contest, quickly answered with a three of her own. The answer on how to stop Kramer was tough for Triton to find.The 5-foot-9 guard went 7 of 15 from the field for 19 points to go along with six steals and four rebounds to lead the Vikings. It was the contribution of Valley's role players, however, that carried Valley to the win. Rohrer stepped up in place of Jackson and came up big with four points, four steals and 10 rebounds.
Battle Of The Cats Goes To Panthers
NAPPANEE - As Warsaw traveled to Napanee to face NLC rival NorthWood Friday night, Tiger coach Phil Jensen had other things on his mind. Before he stepped on the field, he attached a beeper to his belt to alert him if his wife went into labor with their second child. Once the game started, the Tigers began a labor of their own. The Tigers stepped on the field with the odds stacked against them.NorthWood, virtually impossible to beat on its field, was expected to defeat the Tigers in a fairly close game. In the end, NorthWood came out on top 34-28 as expected, but the a game was an exciting one that was undecided until the final minute of regulation play. The game was closer than anyone could have imagined. Warsaw won the initial coin toss, but deferred possession until the second half, and NorthWood began the contest on its own 19-yard line. The Panthers took control and quickly moved the ball into the Tiger end zone, making the score 7-0.
Two-Out Thunder By Squires Leads To 11-1 Win
AKRON -ÊBaseball coaches like to see their teams hit, especially with two outs.Monday night in Akron, Manchester coach Jack Rupley definitely liked what he saw. The Squires scored nine runs with two outs against Tippecanoe Valley on their way to an 11-1 six-inning Three Rivers Conference victory. After the Squires and Vikings went three up and three down in the first inning, it looked as though Caleb Shewman would shut down Manchester's next three batters until Josh Bradley drove a two-out double to left field to start a Squire threat.Brady Burgess followed suit with a single that squeaked past the shortstop to send Bradley across the plate for the first run of the game. Up 1-0, Manchester was not out of the woods.In the bottom of the second, Valley knocked at the door, loading the bases with two outs.But the Squires refused to let the Vikings in, getting the third out without allowing a run to score.
Tigers Stumble But Walk Away With Win
HUNTINGTON - Warsaw's boys basketball team may have taken a step backward Friday evening, but it was a step forward that allowed the Tigers to walk out of Huntington with a win. Though host Huntington North cut a 17-point lead to two in the fourth quarter, the Tigers came away with a 52-46 victory, thanks in large part to a strong first half from sophomore Michael Moore and a 14-of-18 effort at the charity stripe in the final frame. Warsaw led 34-17 with 5:17 left in the third, but a critical 17-2 run ignited an othewise dormant Huntington North crowd, cutting the Tigers' advantage to 36-34 with 4:41 remaining in the game. Warsaw, which let a 14-point third-quarter lead slip away at South Bend Washington Tuesday in a seven-point loss, responded with a pair of Moore free throws and a key baseline jumper from junior Adam Griggs.
Mays’ Road Takes Him From Lexington To South Whitley
After playing big-time college basketball, first at North Carolina State and finishing his master’s degree at Kentucky, Julius Mays finds himself going from playing in front of thousands of fans in Lexington’s Rupp Arena to being the new athletic director at Whitko. The population of the entire school district is somewhere around a fifth of Rupp’s 23,500 capacity. The Marion native has had a long and winding road so far in life, but it’s about accomplishing goals rather than reaching destinations. “I never had a written plan. Obviously, I have goals and there are stepping stones to achieving those goals,” Mays said. “I was welcomed with open arms at my alma mater (Marion High School) and I was greatly appreciative of that opportunity.
WCS To List Silver Lake School On eBay
Silver Lake School will be posted on eBay, Warsaw Community High School will go to a traditional seven-period day, and Jim Mills will keep his job as the cross country coach at the high school.
Warsaw Schools Accept Donations, Grant
Large gifts to Warsaw Schools were accepted by the school board Monday night.Menards and an anonymous donor each donated $25,000 to the Harrison Elementary School Community Fitness Trail.
