10 Years AgoWallace Huffman was tricked into attending the Warsaw City Council meeting recently. His associates appealed to his sense of civic duty and he, of course, answered the call. He thought he would hear a police department presentation addressed to citizens during the council meeting. Instead, he was presented a City of Warsaw Citizens Award by Mayor Ernie Wiggins and Police Chief Steven Foster for his many years of service as a member of Kosciusko Emergency Radio. Huffman has been a KEMRAD member for 62 years.25 Years AgoThe community building on North Park Avenue that has housed the Baker Boy's Club, Warsaw Child Care Center and the United Way offices has been named the Pete Thorn Youth Center in honor of the man who was the Baker Boy's Club's first director in 1926. The Warsaw Common Council and Park Board named the building, which was built in 1980, after L.N. "Pete" Thorn, who was a star athlete at Wingate High School and Wabash College.50 Years AgoMiss Jean McDowell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.M. McDowell, Warsaw, is one of 15 semifinalists in the honorary cadet colonel contest at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. Identity of the winner will be revealed at the upcoming military ball. Jean is a freshman in sociology.75 Years Ago Douglas Douglas, graduate of Warsaw High School, who is now a junior at Hanover College, has been chosen president of the college Young Men's Christian Association for the year 1936-37. He will take office immediately.

10 Years AgoWarsaw Community High School Percussion Ensemble ended their competitive season at the top of their game, having finished first at the last invitational contest and tying for first place at state finals. Warsaw's year-long rivalry with 2000 State Champions Franklin Central ended in a draw with both groups receiving identical scores of 94.65 out of 100. Warsaw achieved the highest score in performance, while the highest general effect score went to Franklin Central.25 Years AgoMiss Tina Fretz, daughter of Wayne and Sue Fretz, has been chosen to be a finalist in the 1986 MIss Indiana U.S. Teen Pageant to be held in Indianapolis June 21 at Indiana Central University. She is a freshman at Warsaw Freshman High School. Her hobbies are playing clarinet, cooking and reading.50 Years AgoMrs. Russell (Helen) Smith, Warsaw was named Indiana's "Mother of the Year". She was cited for having reared her two blind children to lead useful lives. Both children hold highly skilled jobs.She will go to New York early in May to take part in the national Mother of the Year competition. In anticipation, she commented, "I'm delighted, of course. Guess I'll have to buy a new dress and maybe a new hat, too." Her husband "Red" will accompany her east.75 Years Ago Dr. E.V. Herendeen, Silver Lake, (if hens could read), would post a sign to the effect that the hood of his automobile is not a brooder, or a hen house. The reason:Herendeen made a professional call in the morning to the Roy Montel farm. About noon L.O. Henry heard a peculiar noise under the hood of the physician's automobile where it was parked near his office. He found the hen sitting on the engine. It was returned to the Montel farm. A few days later the physician made another call to the farm and the hen found its way to the hood of the car again. The hen finally ended up being given to the physician.
