It was done with taste and respect for the real reason we celebrate Christmas.The dedication and commitment to this display further confirms the reasons Warsaw is truly a blue ribbon community and a great place to live. Bell Trying To Add Stability At Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY - Just as the school structure itself is under construction, the Whitko High School girls basketball program also is in another renovation stage. The Wildcats, who finished last season with a 5-16 record overall, a 2-5 mark in the Three Rivers Conference and a one-point loss to Peru in the first round of the sectional, open the 2006-2007 campaign tonight when they host Central Noble. Whitko enters the season with a new head coach in Rob Bell, the Wildcats' third head coach in six years. Bell, who spent the past four years as an assistant at Columbia City for Hall of Fame coach Wayne Krieger, was hired in June to take over for Ryan Cunningham, who resigned after years at the helm of the Whitko program. In Cunningham's four-year tenure, the Wildcats won a total of 17 games and were 6-22 in the TRC.

Panthers Take Sectional 64-54

NAPPANEE -ÊGoing into the NorthWood Sectional, the Panthers had played all five of their possible opponents during the season.The Panthers lost to No.10 Lakeland, Angola and Northridge in regular-season play. Then NorthWood's boys basketball team avenged the loss to Lakeland with a 63-56 win in the first round of the sectional Tuesday.Then the Panthers got back at Angola with a 70-59 win in Friday's sectional semifinal. And finally, NorthWood downed Northridge 64-54 Saturday to win its first sectional since 1995.It is the just the second sectional championship in NorthWood history. "The kids wanted to play Northridge because I think they felt they did not play well the first time we played them," said NorthWood coach Dan Gunn. But the win was not a cakewalk for the Panthers.

EMT Course A Practical Learning Experience

Students from area high schools are getting a chance to get their feet wet in the medical field. The EMT course lets students decide if they are interested in pursuing a career in being an EMT or nurse.The Warsaw Area Career Center offers the EMT program at Warsaw Community High School.Students attend the course from six area high schools, including Fairfield, Tippecanoe Valley, Warsaw, Wawasee, West Noble and Whitko.Students that complete the course and pass the state exam for licensing can earn dual credit with Ivy Tech Community College. The WACC partners with Multi-Township EMS for the instructors, while WACC supplies the facility and students. Program Assistant for Career and Technical Education Diana Yarian said the EMS decides the criteria for the class. "We do find the students who apply are real interested in it," she said.

Sesquicentennial Events On Tap This Weekend

This weekend's Warsaw Sesquicentennial celebration events include a walking tour through the oldest section of Oakwood Cemetery, 421 N.Maple Ave., and a tour of the Wagon Wheel Theatre, 2517 E.Center St. Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., the public is invited to tour the historic section of the cemetery on the southeast shore of Pike Lake.Every 15 minutes, guides will escort small groups on the one-hour walk. The "ghosts" of former residents will be represented at their gravesites by present citizens. The local volunteers, dressed in period clothing, will be posted at 12 gravesites, where they will recite short biographies of residents who helped make Warsaw what it is today. Lucy Upson (1886 - 1993) was the first female attorney in Kosciusko County and among the first 100 women attorneys in the state.She will be portrayed by Pam Kennedy, director of Warsaw Housing Authority.
