Police Nab 4 In 2 Raids

MILFORD - Police confiscated almost $8,000 and a pound of marijuana in two coinciding raids Tuesday night on Milford's east side. Milford Police Department, with assistance from Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, served search warrants at 9 p.m.at a house at 107 East St.and a mobile home at 317 E.Smith St. The searches, which are the result of more than a year of surveillance, yielded four adult arrests and one juvenile detention. Authorities at the trailer kicked in the door when residents refused to open it. Once police secured the three adults at the mobile home, North Webster's K-9 unit searched the residence and located more than 30 grams of pot and a bag containing $7,860.Kosciusko County Prosecutor David Kolbe said he was surprised at the amount of cash found in the home.

Webster Housing Approved

NORTH WEBSTER - This time next year, senior citizens in North Webster will likely have affordable housing. No remonstrators were present at a public hearing Wednesday at the start of the North Webster Town Council meeting; about a dozen people supportive of the project were in attendance. "Mark my word," said Bob Murphy of Murphy & Associates, Larwill."One year from now, we will have the apartments built and done ...It is going to happen." Murphy is working with the town on securing grant funding for the senior citizen housing complex northwest of the United Methodist Church in Epworth Forest.Wednesday's hearing was necessary to approve submitting the grant application. The 20 units planned will be duplexes with garages between them, an administration building and a clubhouse.The units - eight one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom - will come equipped with appliances.They will rent for $349 per month and $421 per month respectively.The monthly cost includes utilities.

Greenway Project Coming Together

The Greenway trails project is coming together in bits and pieces with development proceeding here and there along the proposed path. Activities director Andy McCleary advised Warsaw parks board members Tuesday a verbal agreement to purchase 28 acres of wetlands property has been secured for the Pike Lake - KCH branch of the Greenway. This section of the project is expected to include a raised boardwalk across the wetlands area.It will begin near the Women's Health Care building and end along the south side of Pike Lake. The "other" trail, beginning at the Chinworth Bridge and extending into Winona Lake has also seen improvements, according to parks director Jon Garber. Garber said a Kiwanis Club Shelter has been moved to the bridge area and is ready for use. McCleary said a grant request by the city of Winona Lake was denied and the Greenway committee is considering transferring some of the Indiana Department of Transportation funding to Winona Lake.

Etna Green To Upgrade Town's Water System

ETNA GREEN - With the completed water study in hand, the Etna Green Town Council on Tuesday decided to move ahead with plans for a proposed upgrade and will seek grant funding for the project. Council president Andy Cook said he would like to contact Commonwealth Engineering to "see what it will take to get it rolling."The proposal calls for a new well field, a 250,000-gallon elevated storage tank and replacement/updating of water lines throughout the town. The work will cost more than a million dollars.Impact on residents, as far as water rates are concerned, will depend on the financing the town secures and the number of years it takes to repay any loans.The town plans to seek grant money from the Indiana Department of Commerce and Farmers Home Administration.

KDI Begins Small Business Loan Program

In order to better serve the increasing number of small businesses in the Warsaw area, Kosciusko Development Inc.discussed a new policy Wednesday that would establish a revolving loan program for the county. KDI members voted unanimously to approve the loan program giving the local banks the ability to contigently commit to applications.Once desired funds are secured for the program, lenders will then have the ability to approve suitable applicants for loans. KDI plans to be the coordinator between banks and applicants.Lake City Bank will act as the program's trustee, and will be the administrator of the funds. The policy hopes to encourage job creation and retention in the community, as well as small business expansion. "We've focused on the very small businesses without the means to apply for a larger means," Lake City Bank vice president Clint Pletcher said. Jim Tinkey, KDI treasurer, presented budget totals for the first six months of 2005.

More Storms Sweep Through Area

More severe storms swept through northeastern Indiana Friday afternoon, spreading damage across Kosciusko County. The Nappanee area was still trying to pick up the pieces from a tornado Thursday evening at Mikel's Mobile Estates. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department will have reserve officers at the mobile home park through Sunday.The officers are providing security at the scene and allowing only residents of the park access to the trailers. Sheriff Al Rovenstine said the residents are trying to gather their personal effects from the wreckage of the trailers.It is estimated that 38 of the 42 trailers in the park were damaged by the tornado. Only four people were injured and treated at area hospitals for minor cuts and bruises. There is still no sewage, water, gas or electricity in the park.Rovenstine said he expects utilities to be off most of the weekend until work crews make sure the area is safe.

Task Force Arrests 13 For Drugs

Kosciusko County Drug Task Force secured 28 arrest warrants Wednesday and made 13 drug-related arrests.In the process of serving warrants, three others were arrested for non-drug-related violations. Felony arrests were: Possession of marijuana, a Class D felony: Dale Shepherd Jr., 19, of 4124 Allen Lane, Warsaw, and Michael Paul O'Connell, 33, of 1904 Sandpiper Lane, Warsaw. Dealing in cocaine, a Class B felony, were Evelyn Michelle Woolridge, 31, and Darrell E.Hall, 38, both of 1832 Sue Ave., Warsaw. Dealing in a schedule 2 controlled substance, a Class B felony, was Nancy Sue Johnson, 56, of 2771 S.Cost-A-Plenty Road, Warsaw. Dealing in methamphetamine, a Class B felony, was Marvin W.Anderson, 34, of 5229 E.Wooster Road, Pierceton. Possession of methamphetamine, a Class D felony: Stanley Lee Newbury, 32, of 9900 Fourth of July Ave., Syracuse; and Kyle Horn, 23, of 520 Ross Ave., Warsaw.

Winona Burglaries Solved

Several weekend break-ins at Winona Lake were solved early Monday when Warsaw police detained an adult and a juvenile after they allegedly attempted to use a stolen credit card to rent a room a a Warsaw hotel. Kenneth Ray Hochstetler, 22, of Bremen, is charged with burglary to a business, possession of paraphernalia and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.He is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on $5,000 bond.Drew Allen Krichbaum, 16, of 201 Lakeview Drive, Winona Lake, is charged with curfew violation and two counts of possession of marijuana.He was released to his mother's custody after being questioned by police. Hochstetler and Krichbaum were apprehended at Wal-Mart after a security officer from Ramada Inn reported the two as acting suspicious.They were denied a room and Hochstetler reportedly asked if the limit on the credit card could be checked.He was told to do so by using the 800 number on the back of the card.

It has graduated 3,200 nurses. 75 Years Ago The large round barn on the Ellis Alexander farm, now occupied by his son Wayne Alexander, was destroyed recently during a thunderstorm when lightning struck the building, burning it to the ground. The loss on the building alone is estimated at $2,500, partially covered by insurance. In addition, considerable property stored in the barn was destroyed.
