Center Street Home On Historic Homes Tour

As a youngster, Jerry Lessig kept an eye on the two-story house across the street. His pretty Sunday school teacher lived at 823 E.Center St.and the boy thought of a variety of reasons to visit the beautiful brick home. The teacher, probably one of Allen Widaman's daughters, grew up and moved away, but Lessig, who became Warsaw's civil engineer, also had an eye for good construction. He bought the Walter Gable-built house in 1964. Current owner Sharon Dinkel, Lessig's daughter, said the crush on the Sunday school teacher is a family legend and she's not sure of the details. What she does know is her parents purchased the property when she was 14 and she's back home with her husband, Roger, and her dad, who lives with the couple. The colonial revival style house is one of seven sites on the 2004 Kosciusko Historic Properties Tour Sept.25.

Schram - Profiles in Cowardice Over Debt Talks

The key to getting ourselves out of today’s Washington debt ceiling quicksand is to understand how we marched ourselves into it. And the key to understanding that recently leaped out at me – as if written in neon Day-Glo – from the now yellowed and dog-eared pages of a book that won the 1957 Pulitzer Prize for biography.

Friend Bests Metzger Again

Silver Lake's Mike Metzger and Hastings, Minnesota's Gary Ries, both Super Semi pullers on the NTPA circuit, claim to be best friends. And as Metzger, owner of Metzger and Sons Trucking in Silver Lake, put it earlier in the week, Ries enjoys coming and showing Metzger up in front of his home crowd. And that is exactly what Ries did Friday night at the Kosciusko County Fair. Driving his Peterbilt nicknamed Stagecoach, Ries, the NTPA points champion in 1991 and '92, topped Metzger's pull-off round distance of 298 feet, 11 inches to take the win. "We had two good passes," Metzger said."The truck that won is good. He's a good friend of mine, and he's got a good truck. We've never won on the home track, and I'm not going to retire until I do." "That was my best run this year," Ries, who also drove the truck Longhorn that finished fourth."We've just had so many engine problems." Ries was also quick to point out that he beat Metzger on a recent fishing escapade.

Letters to the Editor 10-14-2005

- 'Yes' To Barbee Sewer - Freedom Of Religion 'Yes' To Barbee Sewer Editor, Times-Union: I would like to respond to the lady who objected to the Barbee Conservancy District paying $70,000 for the larger sewer pipe (that may or may not some day accommodate a Barbee Lakes sewer system.) During the last meeting that I attended, we learned that if the Conservancy District is dissolved, all funds in the treasury revert back to the county and they are not reserved for projects that benefit the Barbee Lake area in any way. That money came from an increase in taxes to only people living within the Conservancy District and we are the people that should benefit from the money.

Tigers Blow By Bremen 75-41

Warsaw's girls basketball team had beaten archrival Tippecanoe Valley Friday and had scored 100 points in doing so. Bremen's girls basketball team had Friday off. While it wouldn't classify as a trap game - it was only two games into the season, and the Tigers have routed Bremen in the past -ÊWarsaw coach Will Wienhorst was curious to see how his team would perform after a big Friday night. The scoreboard said just fine.Warsaw, 2-0, beat 0-2 Bremen 75-41. Six-foot senior center Jenna Rooney led Warsaw with 16 points and nine rebounds.Sophomore guard Hilary O'Connell added 13 points, six assists and three steals, while senior guard Christy Colt scored 11. Senior forward Nicole Klotz scored 12 to lead Bremen. After settling on a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, Warsaw outscored Bremen 27-8 in the second quarter to go up 43-21 at halftime. Fourteen of Rooney's 16 points came in the second quarter as she helped Warsaw widen its lead.

Grace Opens Season With A 'Blast'

WINONA LAKE - Grace College opened its men's basketball season with a blast on Tuesday night - the IU Northwest Blast. The Lancers opened a season of question marks with an exclamation point in a 111-39 win that just fell short of setting a number of team records. The 72-point win was just seven short of the school record, and it was the largest victory since a 129-51 victory over Indiana-South Bend in 1973.The 39 points allowed fell just four points short of the best defensive game for Grace, and head coach Jim Kessler picked up win No.398 in his 21-year career as coach of the Lancers. And all of this came in a season in which nobody knows what to expect from this team.Last year's top two players, Darren Gagnon and Bert McLaughlin, both graduated along with numerous other players that started or got plenty of playing time. However, one key player returned, Andy Schmidt.

Youth Served At State Golf Meet

PLAINFIELD - Although Wednesday's state golf meet first round will not go down as one of the greatest days in Kosciusko County high school golf history, it could be the building block for some impressive performances in the future. With six county golfers competing at the state meet, five of which will return to their respective teams next year, the meet at Prestwick Country Club was certainly one that will leave positive effects in the next few years. Wawasee's team impressed at the meet, falling just five strokes short of the cut, and Warsaw's Justin Howell gained some big meet experience. Although Howell shot just an 84, head coach Bob Turner was happy with how his golfer competed.

Warsaw Improves To 9-0 On The Season

SYRACUSE -ÊEven though Warsaw started school Tuesday, the girls golf team found the time to travel to Maxwelton Golf Course in Syracuse to face off against Northern Lakes Conference opponents Wawasee and NorthWood. And while Warsaw's girls tend to have trouble with the tricky Maxwelton, the Tigers finished the evening with a 188.Wawasee was close behind with a 195, and NorthWood rounded out the trio with a 236. "Today was a bit different for us," said Warsaw coach Bob Turner."We're not used to playing after school. This was our first day of school, and the kids' minds were elsewhere. They were excited about getting back and seeing all their friends. "And we never play well at this course. It's tough." But don't get Turner wrong. He's anything but disappointed in his team.
