Letters to the Editor 11-05-2001

- Tax Give-Away - Accident Victim Recovering - Organ Donations - Firemen Tax Give-Away Editor, Times-Union: Open letter to Senator Lugar. Topic: The $300 and $600 give-away What the politicians did only shows us that the wealthy and big business got most of the money -Ê60 percent of the total give-away.The middle class got the 40 percent. This is like putting a single penny in a 55 gallon barrel and expecting this penny to help our economy.

U.S. Shows Compassion; Iraq Doesn't

I don't think anyone ever doubted that the U.S.coalition would prevail over the Iraqi army. I guess in most people's minds it was more a question of how long it would take. The more I watched the coverage on the television, the more apparent it became to me that our forces truly are well-trained and well-intentioned. I watched one of our soldiers carrying on his back an injured Iraqi soldier. The U.S.soldier was carrying the Iraqi away to receive medical treatment. I watched U.S.troops gingerly avoid destroying a mosque where a number of Iraqi soldiers had holed up.The Iraqis were firing at our soldiers. It would have been really easy for our boys to call for an air strike and level the place. Instead, they risked life and limb to secure the mosque without destroying it. I watched U.S.troops drop to one knee and point their weapons to the ground when confronted by angry civilians who thought the troops were going to storm a mosque.

Log Home Travels From British Columbia To Kosciusko County

Krista and Bret Nicholson's "dream home" was an authentic log home.Their search for the perfect home eventually took them to British Columbia, to Markus DeHaas, a log handcrafter with Cascade Handcrafted Log Homes. The first step was custom designing the layout (they needed enough room for four children) and selecting red cedar logs native to B.C.To make sure they had the right kind and size of logs for the home, DeHaas actually assembled the home in B.C. After the home was initially built, it had to be disassembled and loaded onto a logging truck for the long trip to Indiana. The basement was prepared for the logs to arrive Monday.

Shirk's last day is May 12, but she said she may be back with the agency in some capacity in the future. "I've enjoyed getting to know and working with members of the community and serving the residents of Warsaw and Kosciusko County," Shirk said. Youth Pastor Returns To High School

Last week, Scott Greene stepped into a self-induced time warp. Within the last seven days he's been late for English class, forgotten homework, jogged around a gymnasium in a physical education uniform and endured the bustling hallways of Warsaw Community High School. Greene is 33, but for 10 school days this month, he's an official WCHS sophomore attending a full schedule of classes. "The reason I'm doing this is because I work with these kids," Greene said."and the only way I can understand their world is to be in their world." As the Warsaw Community Church Director of Student Ministries, Greene decided to again experience the life of a high school student to better connect with teenagers and young adults. His website, www.twoweeksback.com, documents his daily happenings, focusing on the pressures students face, their relationships with teachers and each other; even the reaction they have towards a sophomore 15 years their elder.

Study Ordered

Staff Report A study of calling patterns between Claypool and Warsaw was ordered by a state agency Wednesday to determine if nontoll service is justified. GTE North, which operates the Claypool exchange, and United Telephone, which operates the Warsaw exchange, have been ordered by the Indiana Regulatory Commission to conduct the study. For extended area service to be approved, the study must show that three or more calls are made to Warsaw by each Claypool customer account per month and that at least 50 percent of Claypool customers make three or more calls to Warsaw. If extended service is approved, customers in the two exchanges would be able to make and receive calls without paying long distance charges. A surcharge would be added to customers' bills in place of the toll charges, but the surcharge would be eliminated after five years. Approval involves a four-step process: • A petition with the requisite signatures. • A successful call usage study.
