Syracuse To Hike EMS Rates

SYRACUSE - One of the least expensive area ambulance services received permission Tuesday to hike its rates in order to finance future purchases. Town council approved a recommendation by Syracuse Fire Chief Jerry Byrd to increase ambulance service rates for Syracuse EMS. The move was also unanimously supported by EMS personnel, Byrd told council members Tuesday. Council approved the request unanimously. Despite the hike, the new rates are still among the lowest, Byrd said. The changes include: • Basic rate jumps from $85 per call and $3 a loaded miles to $150 per call and $3.50 a loaded mile. • Advanced rate jumps from $150 per call and $3.50 a loaded mile to $200 per call and $3.50 a loaded mile. • The service will continue to bill for supplies. According to Byrd, North Webster's basic rate is $125 per call and $3.50 per loaded mile.Milford charges $175 and $3 per loaded mile.Goshen charges a flat rate of $300 for all runs.

City Set To Update Addresses

Home and businesses owners should keep an eye on their mailboxes and prepare for a new address. According to City Planner Jeff Noffsinger, his department is in the process of reviewing and verifying all the addresses in the city for the U.S.Census Bureau. "The intent is to create the most accurate list of addresses for the U.S.Census Bureau," Noffsinger said."We're going through our records and comparing them to the census records." Part of the process is correcting some addresses and re-addressing others, he said. "We're basically reassigning some addresses.There are some single family structures that have been converted to multi-family, with half addresses.We'll be getting rid of the half addresses," Noffsinger said. According to Millicent Weiss, who is coordinating the process for the planning department, there are 94 half addresses which will be changed Jan.1.

Syracuse Community Center Close To Becoming A Reality

SYRACUSE - "I see this as a place where the community will get together more," said Syracuse Park Superintendent Mike Hixenbaugh about the planned community center. As early as December 2001, the community center could be ready for all residents of Syracuse and the surrounding area to enjoy.It's planned to be approximately 15,524 square feet and will sit on approximately 3.8 acres of donated property. Planning for the facility has been going on for a number of years.It's changed in shape and size, but, Hixenbaugh said, "Now we're at the point where we reduced it and it's more of a realistic size facility for the town of Syracuse." The center board hit a milestone recently when it reached the number of pledged dollars it needed to apply for the Community Focus Fund grant.The $200,000 was raised by the deadline of Sept.8.

Knipsel Leaving Auditor's Office After 18 Years

She knows her last day will be full of tears, still she is also looking forward to retiring after approximately 18 years of public service. Charlene Knispel, 69, Kosciusko County auditor, is retiring at the end of this year.She will be replaced by Sue Ann Mitchell, the former county assessor. Knispel said, "I'll miss my girls.They are a marvelous staff.There's not enough words to describe (their good work)." One way to tell if an elected official did a good job is if they leave a position better than they found it.Charlene said she doesn't mean to degrade any previous auditor's work, but she feels she has done just that. "This office could run without an elected official," she said."That's how confident I am in my staff." Knispel was born in St.Louis, Mo.She has four grown children and 11 grandchildren. She moved to Fort Wayne from Missouri in 1945.She then went back to school in St.Louis and then at Indiana University.

Sports Help Students Prep For Military Service
