Editor, Times-Union: Lately, there have been some fellow contemporaries who have asked why I have not written a letter to the editor for a while. My answer to this question is that sometimes life takes its toll on a person and at times it seems a person is lucky to have enough energy for a meaningful thought.

Legion Dedicates Receptacle For Retired Flags

To each person, the American flag can mean something different. But there is only one way to respecfully retire the flag. Saturday, American Legion Post 49 dedicated a receptacle for all Kosciusko County residents to place their retired flags in for proper retirement. Denny Nice, of Post 49, said along with the Legion, the U.S.Post Office, C&M Body Shop and the Warsaw Street Department helped make the receptacle a possibility. Ken Locke provided a historical background on the flag and explained the colors. "The reality is that on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress did not give us much direction on the meaning of the colors," he said.

Shots Fired At Officers

A Cromwell man fired about 70 shotgun rounds at police officers Thursday night, injuring Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department deputy Jeff Howie. Robert James Louden, 41, of 9821 E.Rockabye Lane, Cromwell, was arrested without incident, though it took three hours of negotiation before he submitted to police. According to Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine, officers were called to the Louden residence at 4:30 p.m.regarding a domestic disturbance. Two deputies, Howie and Rick Shepherd, arrived and spoke with Louden's wife and child, who said they did not want to take any action regarding the altercation.The pair left the premises. The officers knocked on the trailer door to speak with Louden, who was inside, but he refused to answer.Realizing he was not going to answer, the officers headed back to their squad cars to regroup.According to Rovenstine, they intended to try and contact Louden by telephone to obtain his statement.

Kelly Warrick wanted to let the Warsaw Fire Department know they were appreciated so she recently presented the department with a quilt she made. "I just don't think they're recognized enough and I just wanted to say thanks," she said Friday afternoon.Though she said she never has had to have their help, she said she feels secure knowing they are there if she needs them.

Reffitt, Garrard Honored At Fair In 'Our Lady' Event

Anna Reffitt and Karen Garrard, both of Warsaw, were honored during the Our Lady of Kosciusko event in the activity tent on the fairgrounds Thursday. The ceremony is for county women older than 65. Reffitt was nominated by her granddaughter, Trina Springer. Garrard was nominated by her neighbor, Jennifer Griffith. Reffitt has devoted her life to her family, Springer's letter says.She and her husband Floyd celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September. They are parents of five children: Danny, the late Diann, Sue, Cathy and Floyd Jr.
