Letters to the Editor 10-18-2006

- Ethanol Risks - Crime Prevention - Vote For Smolen Ethanol Risks Editor, Times-Union: As a parent and resident in the Milford school area, I have some major concerns about the proposed ethanol refinery.I should preface this by saying that I am not against ethanol, however, I believe that these heavily industrial sites should have a standard minimum distance to schools and/or towns allowable by the state given the risks that are involved with being located close to them.

Warsaw Outlasts Wawasee

"Somebody had to win." Wawasee head soccer coach Paul Boyd summed it up pretty well with those four words. In a game that lasted through two 40-minute regulation periods, two seven-minute overtime periods, and a shootout, Warsaw came out on top 1-0. "We knew this would be a good game because we won in the regular season," said Warsaw head coach Corey Rose."That made (Wawasee) want this game even more." "It was lovely," said Boyd."What a game." More yellow cards were given than goals were scored in this matchup of area rivals. With 24:37 left in the first half, Wawasee's Chad Wortinger was given a yellow card for initiating a dangerous play. Later, Warsaw's Brad Waggoner was given a yellow card of his own for language. At halftime, the score was tied 0-0. "We knew this would be a battle," said Rose. The second half began as the first had, with both teams playing intense soccer.

Triton Bounces Back, Still Unbeaten

BOURBON - The Triton Trojans scored 20 unanswered points to hold off visiting Northfield Friday night. The final score was 20-12, taking their season record to 2-0. On the second play of the game, sophomore Chad Ulmer sprinted for a 70-yard touchdown run. However, the officials ruled that he stepped out of bounds at the 29-yard line.Triton had to punt when they couldn't capitalize on their first opportunity. Starting on its own 20-yard line, Northfield drove the length of the field in 1:58, capped by a two-yard run.The score remained 6-0 after the extra-point attempt was no good. The Norseman then surprised Triton with an onside kick which, Northfield recovered at the 47. Triton's defense was kept on the field for more than four minutes as the Norseman scored again to go up 12-0.The two point conversion was stopped short by Triton, giving the Trojans the jump-start they needed.

IHSAA Green Light A Critical First Step

Wednesday’s IHSAA announcement clearing the way for fall high school sports to be played is a critical first step to getting student-athletes on the field. But it’s hardly an iron-clad guarantee, as we found out later Wednesday afternoon when the Marion County Health Department put a stop to such activities until at least Oct. 1. That means no schools calling Indianapolis home will compete much before Oct. 10 unless the IHSAA waives the requirement for a minimum number of practices before a first competition.
