Manchester Centenarian Remembers Several 'Firsts'

NORTH MANCHESTER - Velma Felabom, 100, remembers everything from the first car and electricity to growing up during the Great Depression. She lived on her own until recently, when she broke her arm - her first broken bone ever.She then decided to move into Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester. She was born May 12, 1901, in a little town called Tunker. Felabom said during her childhood years she lived with the hardships of being poor growing up during the Great Depression. "I hope you guys never have to go through it," Felabom told me."I can't say we suffered a lot because we lived on a farm.What we bought wasn't worth half of what we paid for it.So I had to go back to work. "We would have lost everything we had if I hadn't gone back to work," she said. She went to work in an OshKosh overall factory in Columbia City, where she worked nine-hour days that began at 4 a.m.

Farm Commodity Prices Remain Fairly Stable

When consumers see higher prices in the grocery store, some of them seem to think the increases are a result of higher prices received by farmers. "Sometimes, for some products, this may be true," said Indiana Farm Bureau Second Vice President Carolyn Hegel, "but not always, and certainly not in Farm Bureau's latest survey of grocery store prices." Overall, the prices Indiana farmers received for their commodities have been fairly stable since last quarter's "market basket" survey, which was taken in May - yet the prices paid by consumers reached an all-time record level in the latest survey, which was taken in August. The survey showed that the average price for 16 basic food items increased from $35.97 in May to $37.09 in August.The total for the same quarter was $35.21.

Triton Destination Imagination Teams To Go To State

BOURBON - Two Triton School Corp.Destination Imagination teams will compete at state finals April 5. The two teams had to place in the top four at regionals to advance to the state competition, and both teams placed fourth at regionals.Only the top team at state competition will advance to global competition. Members of the high school team include freshman Reed Monesmith; sophomores Kris Hill, Kayla Hollingsworth and Jana Sell; and junior Betsy Price. The junior high team is eighth-graders Cole Eiser and Dane Sahlhoff; seventh-grader Kaitlyn Hollingsworth; and sixth-graders Josh Burkholder and Alexis Howard. The high school team is competing in the improvisation competition this year.

Valley Superintendent To Retire

BURKET - Tippecanoe Valley School Corp.Superintendent Dr.Karen S.Boling Monday announced her intention to retire from her post on June 30, 2004. Assistant superintendent Daniel V.Kramer will take her place. This July, Kramer and Boling will exchange jobs to make a smooth transfer of leadership. The corporation is facing several large issues.They are considering remodeling a section of Tippecanoe Valley High School.The school board is hunting for a housing facility for its alternative education program next year.The state is flat-lining budgets to school districts in light of their financial troubles.Kramer said that is essentially decreased funding. Boling said her retirement is a result of her age.She has worked at Tippecanoe Valley for 14 years, the majority of the time in the leadership position. Kramer has been assistant superintendent for 11 years.He has worked for Tippecanoe Valley for 24 years.
