Triton Walks Its Way To Loss

UNION MILLS -ÊA high school baseball game could not be any closer. The score was tied at 5-all in the bottom of the seventh.Bases juiced.Two outs.Full count. The final pitch of the game was a ball that sent the winning run across the plate. Unfortunately for the Triton Trojans, that winning run belonged to the Tri-Country Cavaliers in the first game of the South Central Regional Saturday morning. Tri-County was up 3-1 until the top of the seventh inning, when the Trojans made an exciting comeback.Joey Potter started the inning with a double and Tyson Blackford walked to put the tying run on first. A passed ball put the runners on second and third as Jake Burnett stepped to the plate.Burnett hit a single that sent both of his teammates across the plate and tied the score at 3. A ground ball by Kenny Miller moved Burnett to second, and Ryan Klotz hit a single to send him home for the go-ahead run.

Pierceton Probes Skateboard Incidents

PIERCETON - Pierceton police officer Jim Bumbaugh presented incident reports at the Monday town council meeting regarding a couple of unidentified children. Youths were reported skateboarding in a church parking lot and in a bank parking lot this week.Someone also broke off signs prohibiting skateboarding at the church, at the bank and at the elementary school.Another sign in the church lot was scribbled with obscenities. A couple of signs were thrown on the railroad tracks, but were removed by a citizen before a train could run over them. Council president Jerry Kreger asked board member Mandy Espinoza to talk to the group developing the skate park.The organization includes youth who skateboard. "We're working to build the skate park.They need to police themselves and put pressure on their peers," Kreger said.

Silver Lake residents may be able to keep their elementary school open - but they may have to keep it as it is, with no major renovations. That was one of the suggestions the Warsaw school board will consider in the next two months as part of their proposed building project.

Schools Keep Watchful Eye On State Budget

Local school districts are weighing their options while adopting a wait-and-see attitude on Gov.Frank O'Bannon's budget cuts for the 2002 school year. O'Bannon announced education budget cuts of $115 million statewide, and how that translates to individual school districts depends on whether or not the governor vetoes House Bill 1196.The bill, which passed the Legislature last week, would allow school districts to use money from some funds to make up for shortfalls in other funds. Financing for each school district in Indiana goes into five basic funds: the General Fund, which is mainly salaries and benefits; the Capital Projects Fund, which pays for construction, rental, land acquisition and equipment maintenance; the Transportation Fund, which includes school buses and driver payroll; the Debt Service Fund, which handles payments on loans and bonds; and the Preschool Fund.
