Highway Department To Install Waste Oil Heater

Highway Department Superintendent Dennis Pletcher received permission to install a waste oil-using heating furnace in the department's main building from the county commissioners Tuesday. Pletcher said the department's costs of $15,000 to $20,000 probably will be recouped in three years. He advised commissioners Ron Truex and Brad Jackson that street paving work is done on CR 200N, between U.S.30 and CR 175E and on CR 250N between Ind.15 to CR 150E.He said the Deerwood Park subdivision paving should be finished by the end of the week. Pletcher also received a letter from the Hunter's Ridge Property Owners Association asking the county not sand the streets, just the intersections, in the subdivision. The commissioners overturned a recommendation by the Area Planning Commission and approved a rezoning request by Rex Hogan. The APC denied the agricultural to residential rezoning.

Waggoner Lists Prosecutorial Priorities If Elected

Using the habitual offender statute and enforcing presumptive sentences are two of Charles Waggoner's key plans if he is elected prosecuting attorney for Kosciusko County. "Those two issues will make a lot of difference in the county," Waggoner said at a meeting Sunday night at the home of Peggy and Doug Sawyer, Winona Lake. Since 1977, Indiana's habitual offender statute allows prosecutors to tack on extra prison time if the suspect has prior convictions.Waggoner believes more criminals should be charged as habitual offenders, putting them in prison for longer terms. "We need to use (habitual offender statute) and keep (criminals) in at least as long as allowed to keep them from victimizing someone else," Waggoner said.

Patience Pays Off For No. 18 Tigers

GOSHEN - It was the response Al Rhodes was looking for. After their first loss of the young season and the most disappointing performance on Friday, the No.18 Tigers came back with the concentration and discipline Rhodes has been looking for through the first two weeks of the season a day later. "It was a big mental turnaround from last night's performance," Rhodes said."It was the first game that we really showed some gamesmanship and followed the game plan to a tee.I hope we are growing up, and we will move forward." The Tigers' 46-34 win over Goshen Saturday was possible in part because of Warsaw's ability to remain patient against the Redskins' patented slowdown and tough defensive game.

Horseshoe Pitchers Stake Out Points In Thursday Tournament

The clang of steel against steel was heard ringing from the Kosciusko County Fairground's camping area where the horseshoe tournament was under way Thursday afternoon. The annual tournament began at 4 p.m.with five men, two women and one reluctant junior participating. "Go ahead and sign up," organizer Stan Loy advised Susie Hamilton about the junior division."All you have to do is throw one shoe for the trophy. You're the only one here." "For real?" Hamilton asked. She signed up, stepped to the 30-foot line and gave the U-shaped device a toss.It landed in the pit, not quite close enough for a point. "Now throw it back," Loy instructed. She did, this time coming within 6 inches of the stake to score one point. The regulation distance for horseshoes is 40 feet with a 3-foot fault mark at the 37-foot mark. Women, boys aged 16 and younger and men 70-years-old and older have the option to pitch from a distance of 30 feet.
