Grant Retires As Head Of Lake City Bank

When he walked out of Lake City Bank's main doors yesterday, it was the last time as the leader of the institution he led for nearly 20 years. Today was the first day of retirement for Doug Grant. He'll have to learn to adapt to a new lifestyle, but adapting is something Grant has had to do a lot of during his career. "There was a time when someone in banking leadership was able to handle all aspects of the business," he said."Today, everything is so specialized it requires so many people in different areas of expertise." The reason for the increased complexity, as Grant sees it, is the deregulation of the banking industry.

Six Seniors To Lead Lady Lancers Volleyball This Season

After battling through a myriad of injuries last year, Grace College’s volleyball team is excited to welcome in the 2017 campaign. The Lady Lancers field an experienced roster, led by six seniors who are primed to end their careers on a high note. Grace’s senior class of Kari Feddema, Tori Bontrager, Sara Miller, Naarah Foster, Sierra Smith and Savannah Hart enjoyed a national tournament during their freshman season. They have plans to return to nationals in 2017 and are armed with the big-game experience to back up those dreams. Third-year head coach Katie Van Hofwegen maintained that the senior class was “essential” to the team’s success. “They’ve all had significant roles the past few years. We will look to them for leadership, to set an example for the rest of the team and to invest in the underclassmen. They are wholly invested, and they want to go out on top.”

Ambrose - Obama's Open-Mic Comments

Thinking a microphone was turned off, President Barack Obama whispered some secrets to Dmitry Medvedev the other day. He and the Russian president were in Seoul, South Korea. That, you would think, is a long distance from American politics, though not so long when the microphone is really turned on in an age of immediate, long-distance, blanketing communications.

Silver Lake OKs Sitting Park At Old Marathon Lot BY LAURA SLOOP, Times-Union Lifestyles Editor SILVER LAKE - Silver Lake is getting a new sitting park, despite opposition from a few residents. Discussion and plans for the park - to occupy the old Marathon Station lot in Silver Lake - have been going on for several months at town council meetings, where the public has been asked to voice their feelings on the plans. Council members received the first negative feedback on the park last month, after five months of discussion, when they decided to hold off on the plans until Tuesday's meeting. "It's been talked about in every meeting since November," council president Brenda Wadkins said, "...and it's been in the paper." The town's meeting room was filled Tuesday with residents - some opposing the park and some supporting it. "This proposed park would be a revitalization start for the downtown area," Chuck Herschberger, 15-year Silver Lake resident, said.

Warsaw Man Hopes Aviaries Will Help Nursing Home Patients

John Montgomery, Colfax Street, has taken a personal interest in Miller's Merry Manor's plans to add two aviaries to their facilities. The employees at Miller's took care of Montgomery's wife for four years when he no longer could. In August, Hilda Montgomery died from Alzheimer's disease. He said he wants to give back to Miller's and to the patients who may be in a situation similar to his wife's. "I'm trying to get a bird aviary for the nursing home. They need some focus of some kind. It's too late for my wife but there's a lot of people out there," Montgomery said. An aviary is a large cage or building for keeping many birds. "I'm out there doing all I can," he said."I'm grateful for the people who took care of my wife when I couldn't." He said he sympathizes with the residents at Miller's Merry Manor and can't wait to get out there every day to talk to them and help them out.Hilda, he said, would have enjoyed an aviary at Miller's.

Warsaw Discusses Treatment Plant Upgrades

Dave Henderson, department head of Warsaw's wastewater treatment plants, and Brian Houghton, environmental engineer, held their second meeting of the month Wednesday in city hall regarding possible improvements to Warsaw's combined sewer overflow system. Houghton discussed long-term plans to further minimize overflow events for the Warsaw area.No overflows have been reported in two years; however Houghton said that few large rainfalls have taken place in this time period. Both Henderson and Houghton said they wanted to prevent as much overflow as possible in the event of heavy rains. The older of Warsaw's wastewater plants runs approximately 1 million gallons of water through its system per day, with the ability to run 5-1/2 to 6 million gallons per day.During a heavy rainfall situation, Houghton estimated that 6 million gallons per day would run through the sewer system, potentially causing overflow problems.

Woman Needs Lung Transplant, Insurance

The Miller family face a hardship not very many families have to face.Travis, a National Guard trainee on his way to Iraq, left training to be with his wife, Lowellita, diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as an infant. Because of her hereditary disease, doctors now give Lowellita one to two years to live unless she has a lung and pancreas transplant. If Lowellita's disease and recent diagnosis were not enough, TRICARE Prime, the most popular military insurance offered, took Travis Miller off of their health insurance because of his absence from the National Guard.Army Reserve members are only part-time and do not qualify for TRICARE health insurance. With no health insurance, Lowellita was taken off the potential waiting list for a lung transplant five days ago.Hospitals refuse to perform medical services if no proof of health insurance can be provided.
