Whitko Gets Update On Budget

SOUTH WHITLEY - "We are not really as bad off as some schools, but we are not as good as some," said Whitko Business Manager Phil Menzie. Monday night at the Whitko Community School Board meeting, Menzie updated the board on the status of the school corporation's budget. "I think with what we did last year ...we are better off than if we didn't take those measures," said Menzie. With retirements this year, some current staff members will be teaching at different schools, but no cuts will have to be made. Menzie told the board that the school will receive 0.5 percent new money from the state this year, but the 2006 budget shows a 1 percent drop in funding, which will amount to about $100,000.The next year, a projected increase of 0.2 percent was calculated, adding about $16,000 to the school's funds. "Hopefully someday we will be able talk about education instead of money," said board president Dave Tranter.

Fair Receives Financial Boost From County

County council voted to approve $43,000 to upgrade the electrical system that has plagued the facility for years. The money comes on top of a regular annual allowance, and will cover the cost of installing a new electrical system at the fairgrounds. However, individual users, such as the Horse and Pony Club, will be expected to complete electrical work on barns and buildings at the fairgrounds. Councilman Tom Anglin noted that REMC's $43,000 bid for the project was less than half of what NIPSCO bid.REMC has offered to provide free labor. Fairgrounds spokeswoman Becky Thomas said she planned to set forth an aggressive campaign to find volunteer labor and support for the improvements. The improvements could help set the stage for more activities at the financially depleted facility, she said. Electrical improvements should lead to a cost savings and eliminate what many considered a dangerous environment.
