County Highway Superintendent Opposes Plan For Ag II Development

Rob Ladson, Kosciusko County Highway superintendent and engineer, voiced strong opposition at the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission meeting against Sycamore Fields LLC's preliminary plat petition for an agricultural II development on 26.214 acres. The property is on the corner of CR 450N and Sullivan Road (CR 650E) in Tippecanoe Township. According to Dan Richard, Area Plan Commission director, the proposed plat is for a nine-lot agricultural II subdivision. It was rezoned agricultural II in the last few months, he said, and was part of a larger piece of property auctioned off recently. Representing the petitioners, attorney Jack Birch said they are trying to develop the property to meet all the ag II specifications. The roads, he said, will all have lot fronts onto a county road to make use of the natural topography of the land and because the drainage of the property will not be greatly affected by doing so.

Residents Scrutinize Western Route Plan

The first of four planned public meetings for the Western Alternate Route Project brought out an estimated 100 people Wednesday. The purpose of the one-hour, 15-minute kick-off meeting was to introduce the project and to receive public input and information. Middle district county commissioner Ron Truex opened the meeting and introduced members of the corridor study advisory committee before handing the meeting off to client service leader and senior civil engineer for The Troyer Group, Steve J.Benczik. Benczik said to make the process for the project work, the needs of all those affected by the project have to be balanced. The object of the meetings is to let the public have a say on the project. The boundaries of the corridor study, he said, include Ind.15, as far west as CR 500W and as far south as CR 450S. He then gave a history of the project.

Where, Oh Where, Have The Indy Stars Gone?

INDIANAPOLIS - The cupboard at the ol' Brickyard seems to be a little bare. For the second straight year, the big names in Indycar racing, Unser, Andretti, Rahal, Penske, are nowhere to be found at the famed oval on the corner of 16th and Georgetown. That could be changing. With proposed rule changes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the rift between IMS president Tony George's Indy Racing League (IRL) and the established Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) could be brought to a simmer and allow the big names back to the Brickyard.

Whetstone Makes It Four Straight At State

When an athlete goes to the state finals in an individual sport four times, people sit up and take notice. When that athlete is also a model student, people shake their heads in amazement. Tippecanoe Valley's Scott Whetstone is that type of student-athlete.He will compete in the swimming state finals on the IUPUI campus in two events this year, the 100 and 200 freestyles. As if that weren't enough, Whetstone was named to the Three Rivers Conference All-Academic Team. His 10.6 grade-point average on a 12-point scale puts him fifth out of 136 students in the senior class at Valley. In this day and age, it is odd to see a high-school kid with so much potential trying to be a well-rounded person and a respected member of his community.

9/11 Hearings May Produce Results

I think, generally, the 9/11 commission is a pretty good idea. It's good to look back and see where government failed or had shortcomings in the wake of something so jarring as the 9/11 attacks. I think some good can come out of the investigation.I think we can improve our efforts with respect to thwarting terror. We already have improved our anti-terror efforts. If all the terror safeguards in place today would have been in place on 9/10, 9/11 never would have happened. Ah, the advantage of crystal-clear 20-20 hindsight. Which is what bothers me about the Richard Clarke testimony.I think he mainly has a political agenda. He was a terror adviser in the Clinton and W administrations. Before that, he worked in various government jobs.Overall, he was a 30-year government employee. He started out as a senior adviser in the W administration but was demoted. I think that kind of miffed Clarke a little bit.

Economic Image Not Reality

I noticed John Kerry stopped talking about jobs. Maybe that's because the economy added 308,000 jobs in March. Retail sales in March, that had expected to be flat, rose 1.8 percent, the highest since March 2003. Economic indicators are positive enough that economists are predicting gross domestic product growth of at least 4.5 percent in the first six months of this year. I must admit that I am cautiously optimistic about the economy, but the whole thing could stall because of spiraling gasoline prices. Only time will tell, I suppose. What I have been noticing is that if you watch CNN and the major networks very much, that's not the picture you get - at all. It's almost bizarre. You get this overwhelmingly ominous sense of looming economic disaster. I want to tell them, "Lighten up guys, it's just not that bad." It's funny, because hour after hour they tell us how tenuous things are in the economy, then they do a poll on consumer confidence.

Erne, Joy Making Tracks In Mud Racing

While his job at the United Parcel Service allows him to drive the 'big brown truck', 38-year-old Brian Erne loves nothing more than driving his 1948 Jeep he calls the Insta-Gator. Veteran stock car driver Dale Jarrett has made the 'big brown truck' common among households in his NASCAR commercials.Erne and best friend Tim Joy, both Whitko High School graduates, are trying to make a name for themselves in the sport of mud racing. Erne, whose daughters Nicole, 9, and Elizabeth, 5, go to Burket Elementary School, remembers going to mud bogging events back in the 1980s.In 1993, he experienced his first mud drag race.He began his own racing career almost immediately and has been hooked since.Hooked like Tiger Woods is to golf.
