Loss Drops Whitko Tennis To 1-14

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊThe Whitko boys tennis team will probably rack this year up to life experience. After being defeated by Prairie Heights 5-0, the Wildcats' record stands at 1-14. "We have a young team, very young," said Whitko coach Fred Lucas."The best thing about our team is that we have six young players who will be able to play if they stick with it." With sectionals coming in just a few days, Whitko is preparing the same way they normally do. "Practice like always," said Lucas."When you're 1-14, you just practice." In singles action, No.1 Justin Roman fell to Shane Potts and No.2 Nick Hamill was defeated by Scott Rose with the identical scores of 6-3, 6-1.At No.3, James Hoffman was defeated by Brent Tubbs 6-3, 6-2. In doubles action, Whitko's No.1 team of Nathan Haywood and Jordan Schrader fell to Greg Kocker and Reid Culler 6-0, 6-2.At No.2, Jarrad Jagger and Shawn Dorgan were defeated by Derrick Rinard and Jeb Thomas 6-2, 6-4.

Couple Face 'Pot' Charges

A Warsaw couple was arrested Friday for allegedly running an indoor marijuana growing operation. Kenneth Schue and Laura Sue Schue, both of 460 E.CR 450S, Warsaw, were booked into Kosciusko County Jail Friday evening on identical charges of maintaining a common nuisance, dealing marijuana, possession of paraphrenalia and two counts of possession of marijuana.Bond for each was set at $5,000. The couple operate Schue's Landscaping.Further charges may be pending in the case, police said. Around 2:45 p.m.Friday, the Indiana State Police Marijuana Eradication Team was preparing to serve a search warrant on the Schue residence when members of the team reportedly saw Kenneth Schue tending marijuana plants near the CR 450S address. Kenneth Schue was then taken into custody for possession/cultivating marijuana.Police said he was the person they expected to find in the residence they were preparing to search.

Police Seek Suspect In Bank Robbery

PIERCETON - Police are seeking help from the community in determining the identity of a masked man who robbed the Pierceton branch of Lake City Bank while armed with an ax. The suspect apparently surprised the first employee at the bank when she arrived between 8:30 and 9 a.m.to begin opening for the day.Police would not comment on whether the man was in the bank or came in with the employee. Once inside, the suspect allegedly forced the employee to open a vault and to give up the keys to her personal vehicle.She was then forced into a closet and the suspect fled the scene in the employee's car with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect is described as about 5 feet, 8 inches tall.He was wearing a blue shirt and blue pants and had a ski mask covering his face.The man's age and race are not known; his clothing covered any skin that might otherwise be exposed, police said.

A Claypool teen with a history of theft was arrested Thursday for stealing video games from the Warsaw Public Library and then selling them.

Teens Suspected Of Auto Theft

Two Warsaw teens who were picked up walking north on Ind.19 in last night's bitter cold have been connected to a Thursday night auto theft. An Indiana State Trooper picked up the teens walking north on Ind.19, north of Etna Green.In a written statement to police they reported hitching a ride with a truck driver after abandoning the stolen car. Ty Ronald Shepler, West CR 250S, Warsaw, reported to the Warsaw Police Department his car was taken from Kmart, East U.S.30, Warsaw, at 8:56 p.m.Thursday. The teens who allegedly took the car, Armando Anthony Otis Castillo, 17, of 1407 Riverwood Ave., Warsaw, and Sharif Abdul-Muhammed Cureton, 17, same address, are in custody today. The two broke the window of SheplerOs car with a screwdriver that Castillo took from the store.A Kmart employee reported seeing the two in the store prior to the theft.

County Police Solve Recent Thefts

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department has solved several crimes committed by juveniles over the past few weeks. One of the first cases was the burglary and theft of almost $400 from Detailing Unlimited, Warsaw.Joshua Bays, of Warsaw, was apprehended and is detained at the St.Joe Juvenile Center.The investigation continues involving another juvenile involved in the crime. A string of thefts in the southwestern portion of Kosciusko County led the sheriff's deputies to six juveniles, three of whom are facing arrest warrants. More than $3,000 worth of stolen merchandise has been recovered for the owners, and the department has enough fishing equipment in evidence to last the rest of the century. Jason Davis, Burket; Cody New, Rochester; and Christopher Gerber, Beaver Dam Lake, Claypool, all 15 years old, confessed to the crimes.

Aldrich Sentenced To Maximum

Despite a plea from his attorney for leniency, George Aldrich of Etna Green was sentenced today to the maximum term allowed under a plea agreement entered in Kosciusko Circuit Court.He also was ordered to make restitution of more than $100,000. Aldrich, 28, was the driver in the Dec.2 burglary and theft from Rice Ford in Warsaw and Judge Rex Reed said that even though Aldrich didn't participate in the actual removal of vehicles from the lot, "this crime couldn't have occurred without that kind of assistance....You were very important to the overall burglary that occurred."The automobile theft ring has been linked to the death of Kathy Vroman, 48, of Milford. Aldrich is the final defendant of three charged in connection with the theft of several vehicles from the car dealership.For sentencing purposes, a Class D felony auto theft conviction was merged into the Class C felony burglary conviction.
