Officially Speaking

I had several people ask me what the circumstances were surrounding the postponement of Tippecanoe Valley's football game against Southwood Sept.9.The officiating crew didn't show up for the game and it was moved to Saturday night with a new set of officials. The old crew disbanded and failed to inform Valley athletic director Duane Burkhart. How does that happen? I came to find out that most officials sign contracts to do football or basketball games up to five years in advance.Schools want to get the best refs they can so they sign them up as early as possible. Over time, some officials retire or quit and most often the school is given enough notice and they move on to get another official. There is a website schools can access which shows a list of licensed officials and can find replacements. That, however, isn't foolproof because there are some refs who continue to renew their license but have stopped doing games according to IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress.

Wawasee To Build New Webster Elementary

SYRACUSE -ÊInstead of renovating the old North Webster Elementary School, the Wawasee School Board decided Wednesday that building a new elementary school would be the best plan for the future. If all goes according to plan, the facility will be located on 68 acres of land now owned by Joe Barrett and Richard Kistler, at the intersection of CR 750E and CR 600N.The school board will pay $322,092 for both properties. The school board voted to pay $15,000 to the property owners for an option agreement. A public hearing will be held June 29 at 7 p.m.in the high school auditorium.A presentation will be given to the public and a final vote will be taken that night on what actions to take. The school board also determined to make renovations at Syracuse Elementary, Wawasee High School and Milford Elementary School. All board members supported a new North Webster Elementary as did the patrons at the meeting.

KDI Gets Info On Lake Development

County records show 79 percent of the annual property tax total comes from four townships: Plain, Tippecanoe, Turkey Creek and Wayne. Of those properties, 37 percent are situated along a lake. "Clearly, one-third of the county's income comes from lakefront property," said David Tyler, a Tippecanoe Lake resident."The lakes areas are fundamentally important to the economy of the county." Tyler presented the information to Kosciusko County Development Inc.board members Wednesday to illustrate why he was pursuing establishment of a lake residential district. Tyler said the facts regarding the value of lakefront property is "new," in that no one has ever added up the figures before. "It's one reason why our proposal is important.Without the lakes our county would be very different," he said.
