A Disappointing Plan Commission Decision

I was disappointed in the Warsaw Plan Commission's decision to deny Meijer's rezoning request. Meijer, a chain of superstores, wanted to build on land northeast of the Parker Street intersection on U.S.30. To do so, they needed a portion of the land rezoned from residential to commercial. The planners denied their request to rezone. I think the planners based their decision mostly on the objections of neighbors in the area.It was a classic case of NIMBY - not in my back yard. But I don't think the NIMBYs had the most compelling argument.I think Meijer did.And I don't think the plan commission acted in the best interests of the city of Warsaw. That, after all, is what they are supposed to do. I think they acted in the best interests of the NIMBYs. I know, I know.I heard it time and time again."We're not against Meijer. We just don't want them at that location." But the two concepts aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, they are inexorably intertwined.

John Kerry Has Got To Be Kidding

For all those who are disappointed in W - count me as one of those - you can at least make yourself feel better secure in the knowledge that John Kerry would have been much worse. The guy seems to have completely lost control of his mental faculties.Although, that assumes he had control of them to begin with and I don't think I would take that bet. This week in the U.S.Senate, he came up with an amendment that would have required virtually all of the 127,000 U.S.troops in Iraq to be withdrawn by July 1 of next year. Now, I'm not going to debate the merits of the amendment.(The Senate defeated it 86-13, by the way.) You may or may not think that's a good idea and I certainly think there is a principled argument on both sides of the issue of withdrawing troops form Iraq. What I don't get is how John Kerry has become the Democratic point man for troop withdrawal. He got himself on the radio with Don Imus.

Council Tells KDI It's Up To Commissioners To Approve Funding

Roger Moynahan's pitch to secure funding for an enhanced economic development system, namely a full-time director and staff, through Kosciusko Development Inc.was thrown back by the county council Thursday. "It's up to the county commissioners," said Harold Jones, council president."We're not going to make a motion that the commissioners take a stance. We've done that before and gotten our hand slapped." Moynahan presented a Columbus newspaper article about Kosciusko County, "the state's economic development flagship," and an Indiana Economic Development Corp.graphic showing five expansion-retention projects, and the attraction of four new county businesses. KDI had a hand in these developments. Moynahan, the outgoing KDI chairman, has approached the council and commissioners repeatedly, for more than a year, to secure additional funding.

A Conspiracy Of Deceit

It's not so much that maybe President William Jefferson Clinton had an affair with Monica Lewinsky that bugs me. I mean, that bugs me, but it bothers me more that he is so willing to look directly into the collective eyes of this great nation and lie to us about it. I know you are innocent until proven guilty, but is there anybody left on the planet who thinks there wasn't something going on between the president and the intern? Honestly, I think he should have just said, "Yeah, I did it.It was wrong.Sorry."Then all the pundits could have had a heyday with columns about the psychology of trysts or sex addiction and we could have gone on to bigger and better things. But no.The president had to tell us emphatically that he never did anything wrong.Which, basically, is what he always says. And that, precisely, is what bugs me. It is his inability - perceived or otherwise - to own up to his mistakes and take responsibility.

Stutzman Served On Air Base During War

After the couple were married, Margret became the civilian secretary to the Fairfield-Suisun Air Base's (in Travis, Calif.) executive officer, Maj.Markowitz Helman. "I think he didn't want to lose her," Ivo, now 84, said, of his non-combat status from his home on Ford Lane. Margret, also 84, swears the topic was never mentioned between herself and her boss. Ivo was the 1938 valedictorian of the Etna Township High School senior class. "With the school being small, we all had a really good chance of being in band, or on the basketball team, and in most other activities.Everybody knew everybody else and what they did," he said. After high school, Ivo failed a military physical due to poor eyesight. He moved to South Bend and attended Business College. While living in St.Joseph County, he met Margret.
