Buyer Accuses Demos Of Political Gamesmanship

Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer visited Warsaw Tuesday to make himself available to Hoosiers and discuss his campaign. "I wanted to make myself available to you because we were supposed to have been done legislatively Oct.6 in Washington," Buyer said."We're obviously not." Buyer said Speaker of the House Dick Gephardt and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle are playing a political game to keep Congress in session and cause a backlash on the Republicans. "They're doing everything they can to delay, stall the legislation," said Buyer."They're holding us as long as they can." Buyer called it "political gamesmanship."Gephardt and Daschle are obstructing the process to make it appear as if the Republicans aren't getting the job done so they will lose credibility.Buyer is hoping Congress will be out of session by Friday or Saturday, which will give him two weeks to campaign against Democratic opponent Greg Goodnight.

Winona Lake To Monitor Traffic Speed On Island

WINONA LAKE - Residents of the island Tuesday complained about increased traffic and drivers who are going too fast in the neighborhood during the town council meeting. Christie Clay, of West Canal Street, asked that traffic there be monitored for speeding. Councilman David Delp asked her if the drivers were visitors or residents and she said residents, without naming names. Town marshal Malcolm Gilbert said he monitored the traffic last year at one-hour intervals and there were no speeders.The speed limit on the island is 20 mph.He said he would monitor the traffic again this year. Another change order for the senior center was approved in the amount of $4,467, bringing cost of the project to $335,966.34.The renovation is $74,000 over budget.An appropriation of $125,000 from the general fund was approved May 28 to cover the additional costs.

Residents Recognized For 'Hearts Of Gold'

Kosciusko County Community Foundation Inc.recognized 47 Heart of Gold nominees Thursday at the awards reception. The awards highlight ordinary citizens who commit extraordinary acts of kindness and service for their neighbors, friends and even strangers in the community.Each person nominated received a Heart of Gold pin, a certificate and the opportunity to award a grant from the Community Foundation, in his or her name, to the charity of their choice. Ten Heart of Gold nomination stories were highlighted as part of the the celebration. Carolyn Lindemuth, Warsaw, was recognized for fixing meals and visiting the ill, altering prom and wedding dresses, baking cookies for church visitors, reading to residents of Grace Village and organizing the Bethany Movers.

Hooded figures were poised over the table in white paper "safe suits."Peering through safety goggles at wooden boards coated with multiple layers of paint, 20 men, seasoned construction workers, listened to instructions regarding lead paint removal. Joan Kelterman, an instructor of the Environmental Management Institute, Indianapolis, reminded her students that the most dangerous thing about lead paint is the dust. "An amount equal to an artificial sugar packet, spread over an area the size of a football field, is enough to poison a child," she said."You don't want to carry it home on your skin, clothes or boots." The boards were coated with acrylic paint for safety purposes.The dust never flew while the fellows took turns using a belt sander with vacuum attachment, drilled through a dollop of shaving cream and used chemical paint removers.
