Letters to the Editor 11-12-2001

- Expansion Plans - Wonderful Strangers - Grateful To Be Alive - Honesty - Educational Priorities Expansion Plans Editor, Times-Union: I'm the very proud mother of three terrific sons who will most likely be finished with Warsaw Community Schools before the new expansion plans are completed. But after experiencing how a portion of this proposal would have enhanced their education, I truly understand how important this is to the future students and the future of the community.I'm concerned about our present dilemma of dealing with our lack of adequate facilities for our performing arts programs. Now is the time.

Local Community Planners Meet With KLA Cadets

Continuing their education on local governmental procedures, the 25th class of the Kosciusko Leadership Academy met Tuesday at Zimmer's headquarters to hear presentations from several city and county planners. Dan Richard, Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission director, began his discussion by focusing on the history of development in the county.According to Richard, one of the first towns to originate in the county was Oswego, because of its accessibility to stone and running water, two essentials for grain production.Communities then moved to areas with railroad systems, creating communities such as North Webster and Warsaw. Eventually, a broader form of agriculture began to dominate the region, a situation Richard says is still "one of the strongest characteristics of our neighboring communities." Over the decades, Richard said Kosciusko has always ranked high in both the state and nation in terms of agricultural production.

Warsaw Can Weather A Storm

You know that old saying, "If you don't like the weather in Indiana, stay a day." Well, all I can say is, weather in Indiana couldn't get much worse than it was Wednesday. There is literally tens of millions of dollars in property damage throughout the county.Lots of people are calling it the worst storm ever to hit northern Indiana. I can remember some bad storms, but this one was different. Most times one area or another sustains heavy damage and the rest of us just have the more routine branch-and-limb damage. This storm dispatched severe damage all over the place.Damage was more widespread than any storm in my memory - from southwest of Mentone to southwest lower Michigan. Local cops, firemen, EMS personnel, hospital staff, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and lots of good neighbors all pitched in to aid the injured and get the cleanup under way. They all deserve a pat on the back.
