Milford Seeks Funds For Fence At Waubee

MILFORD - Instead of adding $15,000 to the Milford Park Department budget for a fence around Waubee Lake Park, the Milford town council decided Thursday to try to get the money elsewhere, if they decide to put up a fence. The park advisory board asked for the additional money for a fence to help raise money to maintain the park and for security reasons.Their 2002 budget, without the money for the fence, will be approximately $23,500. The council approved $2,590 for the purchase of six new tables for the park. For the five park advisory board members, a stipend totaling $2,500 for 2002 was approved. Clerk-treasurer Charlotte's Siegfried's salary was approved at $33,000, an increase of approximately $4,400.The council approved an increase of their own wages by $500 apiece. In anticipation of a not-yet-determined fire department purchase, $5,000 was added to the cumulative capital improvement fund.

Albertson's Sport Shop Target Of Burglars

Police are focusing on a 17-year-old Fort Wayne male in connection with a break-in to a Warsaw gun store. The owner of Albertson's Sport Shop on U.S.30 discovered the burglary when she came in to open the store about 6:40 a.m.Tuesday.The power was shut off at the main breaker, disabling the store's alarm system, a rear door was open, bars on a security gate were cut and a stack of guns was found next to the back door. When Ruby Albertson called police, she said someone could possibly still be inside, since the guns were apparently placed there to be removed. However, when Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived at the scene, no intruders were found in or around the building. The 22 long guns and 13 handguns near the door were from among the store's stock, but an inventory will have to be completed to determine what, if anything, is missing.

County To Dedicate 'Kosciuszko' Monument

A monument honoring General Tadeusz "Thaddeus" Kosciuszko will be dedicated at 10 a.m.March 27, at the Kosciusko County Courthouse lawn on the Main Street side.Kosciuszko is the namesake for the county, though he was never in Indiana. Born in Poland in 1746, he came to America in 1776 and offered his services to the Continental Congress. The idea of a monument honoring this patriot came from Don Frantz, longtime Warsaw Rotarian.A bust of Kosciuszko is housed in the Kosciusko County Historical Society Jail Museum; however, Frantz thought there should be something on the courthouse lawn for the public to see as well. With the 150th anniversary of Warsaw being celebrated in 2004, it was decided by the Warsaw Rotary Club that a monument should be erected to commemorate this event as well as honor this Revolutionary War hero.

Town Council praises last weekend's BMX race, triathlon

WINONA LAKE - Councilman Rolly Ortega commented on the well-organized BMX race held last weekend, and town marshal Malcolm Gilbert had good words to say about the triathlon event held last weekend, too, during the town council's meeting this morning. More than 150 bicycle racers participated in the bike race, although 200 were expected.Ortega said it was very well run with few parking problems. He asked that organizer Eric Graves be thanked for the event. Gilbert said 373 people entered the triathlon, many more than were expected. He said there were few hitches during the event. Because of the number of athletes, the riders were strung out both ways on Pierceton Road, where they turned around in Pierceton. Grace College security crews helped with the crowd, Gilbert said, as did street department superintendent Bart Jones. Gilbert said it was his observation that few people attended the Pro-Am Classic Golf event at Stonehenge.
