WINONA LAKE - A storm Tuesday evening left Two Red Chairs Gallery's roof damaged and several other Winona businesses and residents without power.A maple tree on the gallery's west side fell on the business's roof Tuesday evening, according to Steve Johnson, owner of Two Red Chairs Gallery, 720 E. Canal St.Johnson was driving home to Granger from work with his wife Linda Tuesday evening when he received a phone call from the gallery's security company.

Wawasee Sees Overview Of Mentoring Program

SYRACUSE - Members of the Wawasee Middle School Mentoring Program provided an overview and presentation of their work to Wawasee School Board members Tuesday. Marsha Streby was first to address the board."I love the mentoring program," she said."I believe in mentoring, and know that it has made a big difference in my life.I love to witness the change in kids' lives at the middle school.Our presentation tonight includes a discussion of the evaluation data that you were given, and an overview." Streby introduced Ruth Case, who compiled the data presented to the board.The information she provided included a comparison of the goals set forth in the original grant proposal with actual results.The first year goal was for 30 mentors, but 35 were recruited.The second year goal was 15, with 20 actually being available.Overall, 120 individuals expressed interest in being a mentor.

Mentone To Study Sewer Rates, Increase May Be Necessary

MENTONE - By unanimous vote, the Mentone Town Council Monday agreed to have H.J.Umbaugh & Associates, Plymouth, study the town's sewer and water rates. The town is just "eking by" on the sewer fund and may need to increase its sewer rates. John D.Julien, CPA and partner with H.J.Umbaugh & Associates, told the council the company has worked with the town in the past on several projects.For the town's current problem, he said, his company can evaluate the financial situation of the utilities and make a recommendation of how the town should adjust their rates if necessary. To make the evaluation, Julien said, they will look at the last three years of the utilities' operations for trends.They will work with superintendent Brian Reed and try to see how operations may change in the future.That will be incorporated into the rate study before the recommendation is made before the council. In Indiana, rates are established in accordance with state statute.
