IPFW Offers Self-Defense Course

IPFW Warsaw Center, in partnership with IPFW University Police, is offering a Rape Aggression Defense course beginning in June at the Center.The course will be Thursdays, June 9 to 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. and costs $25 to attend.

Nursing Home Week Starts Sunday

About 45,000 Hoosiers live in the estimated 600 nursing homes in Indiana, and many of them will be celebrating National Nursing Home Week May 11-17. This year's theme, "Caring for Ages," celebrates the growing role of nursing facilities in the health care community, according to information provided by Indiana Health Care Association. Locally, many of the facilities are geared up for the week, with extra activities planned daily. Dorothy Burkett of Prairie View Health Care Center said the residents are looking forward to the highlight of the week when Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins comes in on Tuesday to call bingo. Residents there will also enjoy bingo and lunch at the Senior Opportunity Center on Thursday, as well as being entertained by a group from New Haven coming to perform accordian music on Wednesday.

4 Reserves Appointed At Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER - North Manchester Chief of Police Linda L.Learned told council members Wednesday that approximately 800 people came through the public safety complex for Halloween.She said the officers "seemed to have as much fun as the children" and they received several compliments on the decorations and "all the extra work we put in to see that the children had a special Halloween." Learned also requested approval from councilmen on four new appointments to the police department. Brooke Murphy, James Hall, Aaron Mabery and Gary Schue were approved to the reserve unit. "All four will come to us with some type of experience in law enforcement," Learned said. In other business: • Council president Don Rinearson said he received a letter of resignation from Bernie Ferringer as plan commissioner.Ferringer will resign at the end of the year.

SYRACUSE - On the agenda for the Wawasee School Board meeting Tuesday the hot topic looked to be board reorganization, but in the end there was no reorganization at all. Board member Brian Dawes was the only person who made any kind of recommendation that would have changed the makeup of the board, nominating George Gilbert for president and Dallas Winchester for vice president, but Dawes could not get a second. In the end, Winchester remained president and Mary Lou Dixon vice president, with only Dawes voting against the motion. The board also heard Wawasee High School Principal Ellen Stevens' proposed changes to the school for the 2005-06 school year.Stevens had three main changes she wants implemented; reduction of study halls, adding courses and an increase in the number of credits required for graduation.
