Letters to the Editor 06-19-2003

- Preaching - Red Light Running - Leadership Seminar Preaching Editor, Times-Union: Preacher converted by his own preaching? Well, not quite, but close. It really happened like this: The Rev.Robert Boggs attended the Billy Sunday Festival Friday at Winona Lake dressed as Billy Sunday, complete with his hair parted in the middle.Part of the program was for these B.Sunday "look-alikes" to do brief dramatic sermons at the Billy Sunday pulpit as Billy might have preached it long ago.

Things Not Always What They Seem

Squeaky Wheels Aren't Always Greased

It's funny how things work out sometimes in local government. Just this past week, the Warsaw zoning board, despite the protests of virtually everybody in a residential neighborhood, approved an industrial use on property zoned residential. LRC Products bought several lots in Rolling Hills, a residential neighborhood. LRC wants to store wooden rafters on the property. I think the people involved are good people.I don't think there is any ill will or malicious intent.I believe they are trying to operate in the best interests of the community. None of the people involved - those asking for the variance, those protesting or those on the board - are bad people. But I must admit I was surprised by the zoning board's decision. Usually around these parts, boards operate under the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" philosophy. That's where they vote based on how many people show up to complain. The side with the most complainants wins.I've seen that quite a bit.

Officers Find Reward In Helping With Relief Efforts

It wasn't quite the way they planned, but the result was just as rewarding. When a group of nine Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department deputies traveled to Mississippi to help with Hurricane Katrina relief, they expected to be deployed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. However, the group arrived without a certification number and special paperwork and was told they had to wait up to two days before they would be sent where help was needed. With two trucks of supplies and only a week to give, what did they do? They struck out on their own, traveling to Gulfport, Miss., then to Louisiana with the help of Joe Wilkey of the World Compassion Network, who was traveling with them. They ended up at Trinity Church in Covington, La., near Lake Ponchatrain, north of New Orleans, where residents were waiting for aid.The only other relief agency the town had seen was the American Red Cross.

Remember When 4.25.2012

10 Years Ago Matt Clinger, a sophomore at Purdue University, was recently elected president of the Purdue University chapter of Beta Tau fraternity, a construction engineering honorary. Matt is a 2000 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, and the son of Ron and Joyce Clinger.  Angela C’Connell, Warsaw, was recently accepted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society at Ball State University. O’Connell is a freshman majoring in elementary education. She is the daughter of Pat and Jonell O’Connell, Warsaw.25 Years Ago    Mrs. Betty Ellison has been chosen to represent the United States as an attache for the country of Belize (formerly British Honduras) in the Pan Am Games this August. She retired in 1981, with 20 years as a Spanish teacher at  Warsaw High School behind her. Although she regards teaching as one of the most exciting things she’s ever done, she retired with plans to travel with her husband, Robert. Five months after her husband’s death, Ellison saw an article in the Indianapolis Star requesting applicants for Spanish-speaking persons to serve as volunteers at the 10th Pan Am Games. 50 Years Ago     An unusual display in front of the Wilson Lawshe residence last week had passers-by doing a double take. One of the evergreen trees in the front yard was loaded with Easter eggs, so highly decorated that many thought it was a Christmas tree. Until a closer look revealed a rabbit underneath this “Easter” tree.                                                                                  75 Years Ago    Two hundred pupils of Warsaw Senior High School enjoyed a dance sponsored by members of the Hi-Y recently at the armory. The evening’s entertainment was well under way by 8 o‘clock, making it possible for pupils in training to enjoy at least a portion of the festivities. Those who assisted in making the party a success were: Jack Cluen, general chairman; Tommy and Fred Gilliam and Phil Lucier, publicity committee; Dave Rankin, Dorian Sanders, and Herbert Chinworth, decorating committee; and Ike Hatfield, refreshments.

Society Receives Stamp Collection

!photo=N0421012.JPG Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union Among the oldest stamps in the Jack Clark collection are those issued depicting former presidents.Above are: (L to R) a 1-cent Harding, 3-cent Washington and a 4-cent Taft. SYRACUSE - Although his grandmother wasn't a "pushy-type," she roped Jack Clark in as neatly as an experienced sailor tying up to the dock. Beginning with a mild mention, a few little rectangles of printed paper and donations from her own collection, the woman sparked the boy's interest in stamp collecting, history and genealogy, which has lasted a lifetime. On Thursday Clark, a medical doctor, gave his vast collection of U.S.postage stamps to the Kosciusko County Historical Society. The oldest stamps were issued between 1930 and 1932, showing former U.S.presidents Warren G.Harding on a 1-cent stamp, George Washington on a 3-cent stamp and William Howard Taft on a 4-cent stamp.
