Schools Receive Safety Grants

Student safety is becoming more and more important in schools across Indiana.Nearly 200 school districts and 84 counties in Indiana will receive student safety funds in Safe Haven Grants totaling $3.3 million. Besides safety funding, something new is being required of schools.For the first time this school year, every school district is required to have a trained school safety specialist.The General Assembly enacted this requirement and budgeted $1.5 million for training. The Safe Haven Grants are designed to help keep kids safe as well as help them become better students and better citizens.Since 1997, $12 million has been invested in the Safe Haven program and each program is designed at the local level. Locally, Warsaw Community Schools, Manchester Community Schools, Triton School Corp., Tippecanoe Valley School Corp.and Whitko Community Schools are all listed as Safe Haven Grant recipients.

Whitko Sees Suggested Renovations

PIERCETON - Whitko school patrons and the school board got initial impressions of renovations to the high school and the price tags for three options. Barton Coe Vilamaa architect Dana Wannamacher presented three versions of facility improvements Monday.James Elizondo of City Securities Corp.gave costs. Over the last few months, Whitko school district patrons were asked to list and prioritize upgrades to Whitko High School, which was dedicated in 1971. Over the years, the heating and cooling system has kept some areas too warm and others too cold.Moisture condensation is a problem.A ramp in the "A" wing was not built with wheelchair-bound students in mind; nor are many areas handicapped accessible.Back in the '70s mentally handicapped children didn't attend public schools. Citizens have waited patiently to exit the gymnasium after events because there are few exits.The wrestling team routinely treks to the Middle School, outside Larwill, to practice.

County Voting Machines In Compliance With State Law

As of Jan. 4, Kosciusko County is in compliance with the Indiana state law that requires all of the county’s voting machines to be equipped with a Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT), County Clerk Ann Torpy told the county commissioners Tuesday.

Kosciusko County Fair Starts Saturday

The monster trucks are coming, the bingo caller will shout, a blacksmith's forge will ring and new thrills on the midway are expected for the 2004 Kosciusko County 4-H and Community Fair Saturday through July 24. Dan Hampton, this year's fair board of directors president, said other changes are planned, too. "Wednesday is community day, and not-for-profit organizations can introduce themselves to the community with free booth or food stand space for the day. "It will be a mini-fair of local organizations and hopefully will go on for future years," said the four-year board member."For a lot of citizens, these organizations work behind the scenes and few of us know about all of them.Since this year's theme is Neighbors Helping Neighbors, we kind of thought community day fit in perfectly." This year, the merchant's tent is 340 feet long and has room for 88 spaces, which are almost sold out.
