Manchester Hears From Students On Job Shadowing

NORTH MANCHESTER - Manchester High School junior Anthony Sorg, senior Carrie White, junior Peter Narragon and senior Bart King reported to school board members Tuesday their thoughts and experiences with job shadowing during GQE Quest Days activities, which took place in September. Cathy Markstahler, MHS math teacher, head of the math department and Graduation Qualifying Exam Quest Days' coordinator, said Quest Days activities were well-received by students. Sorg visited Purdue University, previously his top choice for college. But, he said, he saw how big it was and how small the dorms were and now said he realizes he doesn't want to attend the university. Naragon also visited Purdue University and since has been accepted. He said he liked the "bigger school better than a smaller school" and traveling to the university helped him make this decision.

Planners Nix Amendment Regarding Rooming Houses

After a lengthy discussion Wednesday, the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission decided not to approve an amendment to the county's zoning ordinances regarding rooming houses. The amendment would have allowed rooming houses to be an exception use in residential, agricultural and commercial districts.Currently, they are exceptions in only residential districts. The new amendment also would have defined a rooming house as "a residential structure with temporary lodging for five or more persons, not related by blood, marriage or adoption to the owner, where meals are regularly prepared and served for compensation and where food is placed upon the table family style without service or ordering of individual portions from a menu." If the plan commission had approved the amendment, it would have gone before the Kosciusko County commissioners for final approval.

Manchester Residents Speak Out Against Business Location

NORTH MANCHESTER - North Manchester residents on Westchester Drive are upset at the possibility of a business moving into their neighborhood. Roger Burch owns a tract currently zoned residential at 1706 Westchester Drive. He requested at a plan commission meeting June 25 that his property be rezoned to business. With no neighbors present to oppose Burch's request, planners approved recommending the rezoning request to the town council. But at Tuesday's town council meeting, several neighbors did attend to voice their opposition against the rezoning. Burch said he's been trying to sell the property as residential since January with the only interest shown in the property being from an insurance company. He said at the plan commission meeting he thought he would have a better chance to sell the property if it were zoned business.

Residents Voice Dissapproval Of Proposed Zimmer Lane

Pending final plat approval from the Warsaw Plan Commission, Zimmer projected to shut down a portion of Center Street after the construction of a proposed Zimmer Lane. A 1979 agreement with the plan commission allows Zimmer the vacation of Center Street, with the stipulation that they must construct a "new street 50 feet in width with an easement 10 feet in width north-south adjacent." The company plans to construct a road to allow for the Center Street's vacation, from Hepler Drive to CR 225W.Zimmer was granted a preliminary plat approval on Zimmer Lane during the plan commission's three-hour Monday meeting.

Tigers Brave Elements, Rally Past Berries

And apparently, the gauge is pointed in the right direction. Rachel Liebsch's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning provided Warsaw with the winning margin as it rallied for a 6-5 win over the Berries. "Logansport is a steady, steady program," Warsaw coach Rod Yoder said."They are always there.I was surprised they were not ranked (in the preseason) this year." The Berries, who spent two seasons ranked No.1 in the state a few years ago, have had their way with the Tigers in the past. "Two years ago, we lost 7-1 to Logansport, and we couldn't do anything," Yoder said."Last year, it was 3-1 and again the defense came back to haunt us." Maybe, more importantly, the game marked the start of year No.3 of Yoder's plan for the rebuilding of the Tigers' program.Once a state champion (1991), Yoder is looking to get Warsaw back up to that point once again. But he knows it will take time.

Waste District Surprised By Two-Year-Old Bill

Surprised by the appearance of a $90 invoice for work supposedly performed two years ago, the Kosciusko County Solid Waste District chose not to honor the debt Tuesday. Director Sue Studebaker said the February 1999 Sands Office Equipment invoice indicated payment due for fax machine repair. "I wasn't here then," she said."And there is no one to verify the work." County auditor Sue Ann Mitchell, who serves as the district's financial controller, too, said bills this old are rejected by the county. "It's past the appropriate time to submit a bill and it's not encumbered," the auditor said. The board approved several appropriations related to the move from Center Street to Union Street, from the recycling services account. Studebaker cannot understand why no jail trustees are available to work at the depot.
