Third Planning Session Looks At Neighborhoods

During its third and final strategic planning session Tuesday evening, the City of Warsaw Common Council discussed neighborhood revitalization.


County Closing Deal On Lake City Inn

At 10 a.m.Thursday, Kosciusko County will be "the owner of the new work release center," county commissioners' attorney Mike Miner told the commissioners Tuesday. The work release center will be the current Lake City Inn facility.The county will pay $2.2 million for the facility. Lake City Inn also will house offices temporarily displaced by the county jail expansion project. Work release currently has 36 inmates.Lake City Inn has the potential to house 240 inmates, but the work release program is not expected to expand too much for a while. If the county were to include the work release program in the jail expansion project, it would cost the county $120 per square foot.By purchasing the Inn, the county will save an average of $40 per square foot, Robinson said previously. Robinson said the county will announce it is accepting bids for the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department dispatch project at the commissioners' July 6 meeting at 9 a.m.

Commissioners Give Their OK To Sheriff’s Office SROs For Valley, Warsaw Schools

Following the Kosciusko County Council’s unanimous approval on Thursday, the Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved the hiring of two school resource officers from the sheriff’s office for Tippecanoe Valley and Warsaw schools.

Etna Green Plans 'Old Fashion Daze' On Saturday

ETNA GREEN - Residents and visitors can take a step back in time Saturday when Old Fashion Daze gets under way in Etna Green. The art of pie baking, 50-cent foods, big band music and an outdoor movie will be enjoyed by those in attendance.This celebration replaces the annual Customer Appreciation Days and is scheduled to take place every September.Unless otherwise noted, all events take place at Remembrance Park. Judges will cut into an unknown number of pies for the pie-baking contest at 10:30 a.m.Anyone may enter the contest sponsored by Farmers State Bank.Pies must be delivered to the bandstand by 10 a.m.to be eligible for judging. Beginning at 11 a.m., food will be served for 50 cents per item.Choices include chili, hot dogs, soda, pie and ice cream. From noon until 2 p.m., the Robert Lynn Group will perform at the bandstand.The band will play three half-hour sessions of big band music.

Merchants Frustrated With City Construction

Downtown Warsaw merchants are remaining optimistic about their businesses getting back to normal after Center Street is reopened - just as long as it's done soon. One block of downtown Center Street, between Lake and Indiana streets, was closed to traffic in late September for a "test" renovation project.The renovation plans included laying new sewer lines; rebuilding and repaving the street; pouring new sidewalks; and installing new street lights, seating and trash receptacles. The work also has included removing sidewalks from in front of some businesses, and losing parking places to construction equipment. Many merchants said they heard rumors that the work would not be done until Thanksgiving, news that's not especially encouraging to those businesses that rely heavily on Christmas sales.
