Our Lady Of Guadalupe To Build In Warsaw

Rev.Paul Bueter of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church approached the Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals Monday and his request for a church in a Residential-2 and Commercial-2 zone was approved. The 10-plus acre tract, west of Ind.15, is between North Plaza Drive and Rolling Hills subdivision. Plans to build a catholic church in Milford have been set aside, Bueter said. The decision to build in Warsaw is because most of the parishioners are from Warsaw. "The six-acre site in Milford is too small," Bueter said. The Warsaw property would also be easier to develop. Most of the church's parishioners are Hispanic and currently meet in a converted car dealership at 4th and Main streets in Milford. "Due to the increase in the Spanish population, we've outgrown the Milford church," Bueter said."Most people are coming from Warsaw." A site plan was presented at the BZA and Bueter described a building that would seat about 500 with classrooms and a kitchen.

WCS Board To Consider Moving Forward With $46 Million Building Plan

Warsaw Schools' building program, approved last spring and then delayed, may soon be back on track. According to Craig Allebach, school board president, the board will decide at its October meeting whether or not to advertise to hold a "10-28" hearing at its November meeting.School corporations are required by law to present certain financial information during such a hearing before embarking on a building project. The estimated $46-million building program was approved by the school board at its March 18 meeting. However, in April, Rande Thorpe, business manager for Warsaw Community Schools, said that, because of the education budget cuts at the state level and the uncertainty of state financing, "we believe it's prudent to keep those things on hold" until it's clear what funding is coming from the state. At the August meeting, the board decided to re-evaluate, and possibly proceed, with the building program.

New store fractures local discount grocery market

The newest grocery store in Warsaw isn't exactly a competitor of the adjacent Owen's superstore. After three months of renovations, Save-A-Lot discount grocery store opened Thursday in the old Owen's facility on Center Street, just west of the newest Owen's. The store is owned and operated by Owen's and is intended to dig into the local discount grocery market created by Aldi, a national chain that established itself locally along U.S.30 in Warsaw six years ago. Save-A-Lot features a clean white appearance inside and is marketed as a discount store in which customers bag their own groceries in exchange for less expensive prices. The store offers basic necessities and a fresh meats counter. "We feel it's more expanded than what our competitor is," said Don Good, general manager for Owen's who stood in one of the aisles and accepted occasional compliments from customers passing by.

Bluewater Drive Residents Question Planners Over Replat Of Anchorage Bay Subdivision

Several Bluewater Drive residents questioned the replat of Anchorage Bay subdivision before the Warsaw Plan Commission Monday. The property, owned by RN & CG Properties Inc.is bordered by Sunset Drive to the west, Anchorage Road to the north, Bluewater Drive to the east and a channel to Little Pike Lake to the south. It was originally platted in February 1994. Architect John Kimple presented this request and four others at the meeting. He explained that lots one through three will remain the same, lot four will be slightly changed and lots five through eight will be redesigned.Future property owners of lots six through eight will have direct access to the channel instead of sharing a common area.A cul de sac, Bay Circle Drive, off Anchorage Road also is planned. Pike Lake area residents Bill Rhoades, Jim Flemming, Loren Plotner, Jerry Hatfield and Ed Nortstrom questioned several things about the proposal.
