Beeson participated in more than 100 hours of WCS in service since June 1. She took classes that helped her learn new software programs and learn new computer skills such as building Web pages. 25 Years Ago January 25 1983 Laura Crandell, of Warsaw, is presently studying at the Instituto de Filologia Hispanica in Saltillo, Mexico. Students are totally immersed in the language, culture and customs of the native Spanish-speaking environment, gaining great insight into the Mexican way of thinking through close contact with professors, conversation tutors and the Mexican family with which they are lodged. 50 Years Ago January 25 1958 Gals on the Arnolt bowling team surprised themselves a bit when they rolled 975, believed the best score yet for any amateur women's team on a local alley. Individual tallies were: Elsie Wiest, 189; Geraldine Lemna, 195; Marie Fisher, 168; Lila Robinson, 203; and Edna Alice Evers, 220. The team handicap is 64 pins, making the total score 1,039. 75 Years Ago January 25 1933 Word has been received in Warsaw that the Carnegie hero fund commission has announced that a bronze medal has been awarded to Roy C. Jones, 17, of Syracuse. Jones saved Lillian Reed, 17, from drowning by diving eight feet under water and loosening her grasp from a rowboat which had overturned in Dewart Lake. Jones upheld Lillian with his teeth while another girl clung to his back for two minutes until a boat arrived.

Word has it the rest of her game was less than sensational. 25 Years Ago March 6 1983 The Warsaw Community High School Jazz Band received a first division at the ISSMA Jazz Band contest held at Wabash recently. Members of the organization are: Grace Long, Missy Freeman, Mike Cook, Katrina Swoverland, Kelly Retz, saxes; Karen Paston, Lisa Mayo, Kenny Harrell, Bryan Neher, trumpets; Lee Perry, Ken Overmyer, Ben Wuthrich, trombones; Julia Parke, piano; Jodi VanHoosen, bass guitar; and Mark Miller, drums. 50 Years Ago March 6 1958 James Waltz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earle W. Waltz, Syracuse, is appearing in "I Pagliacci," produced by the Opera Workshop at DePauw University. A bass, Jim sings in the chorus. The Opera Workshop, founded 10 years ago by a group of undergraduates, is the only all-student opera association on an American campus. 75 Years Ago March 6 1933 Warsaw Legionnaires and members of the Legion Auxiliary entertained with a card party in the Legion home. Fifty-five World War veterans and members of their families were in attendance. Nine table of bridge were played and three tables of euchre. At bridge ladies' first prize went to Mrs. Donald Lessig, and men's high score prize was won by Francis Bowser. Mrs. Laurance Baker and Ferd Walters, of Silver Lake, were high score winners at euchre.

10 Years Ago March 7 1998 Maurice McDaniel of Atwood will celebrate his 80th birthday March 15 at the Atwood Civic Center. Born and raised in the Orion community, McDaniel attended Harrison Community School and graduated from Atwood High School in 1937. He is a retired farmer and associated with Mac's Eggs. 25 Years Ago March 7 1983 POTPOURRI - Hall Of Fame - Longtime area bowler and former Winona Lake postmaster Phil Laurien to be inducted into the Indiana Bowling Association Hall of Fame in special ceremonies in Columbus. Laurien, who has bowled more than 75 years, is still very active on the lanes. 50 Years Ago March 7 1958 Before the Paul Lattas left Warsaw for a visit with relatives and friends in California, Betty Lu sent us a story about a cow who actually flew a kite. Seems a youngster put his ball of kite string on the ground for a moment. A curious cow grazing nearby in the field sniffed the string, then swallowed the whole reel. Passing motorists stopped, gazed in astonishment. Sorry, we won't know until Betty gets back how the predicament was remedied. 75 Years Ago March 7 1933 Only one of the Warsaw drug stores has so far ordered its liquor supply for 1933 under the new liquor medicinal law. This store ordered 480 pints. The whisky, which will be handled by drug stores, can only be secured for "medicinal" purposes on a doctor's prescription.
