The winning essays were written by seventh-graders Summer Jones and Zachary Woodward. 25 Years Ago December 17 1982 Jean Coverstone, lifetime Kosciusko County resident and associate professor of art at Grace College, has recently published Landmarks of Art, an art appreciation textbook for use in the Christian college classroom. The book is designed to acquaint its readers with basic landmarks in art that have influenced western civilization. 50 Years Ago December 17 1957 Nine Winona Lake residents were honored recently for their years of service to the Free Methodist Publishing House at a Christmas dinner held at Honeywell Memorial, Wabash. 10 Years Ago January 18 1998 A Warsaw landmark will disappear at the end of January when Pinky's Union 76, on the corner of Detroit and Center streets, closes its doors after 33 years. Owner Robert Eherenman, whom everyone knows as Pinky, is not retiring by choice. But a ruling by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would require all gas stations to remove their underground tanks and replace them by Dec. 2, 1998. For Pinky's three tanks, the cost, estimated between $50,000 to $100,000, is simply too much. 25 Years Ago January 18 1983 The Milford Public Library celebrated 75 years of service to the Milford community Jan. 15 with an open house. The current library was built in 1918 with help from the Andrew Carnegie Fund. It opened in January 1919. Prior to the opening, a library had been housed in various businesses and schools in the downtown area. 50 Years Ago January 18 1958 Dave Kinsey, who just a year ago was performing for Silver Lake High School, is currently helping the Manchester College basketball team improve its record. Last Saturday Kinsey led all scorers with 20 points as the Spartans defeated Earlham. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Kinsey of Silver Lake. A four-year varsity regular at Silver Lake High School, he was one of Kosciusko County's best all-around players. 75 Years Ago January 18 1933 Bolinger's Old-Fashioned January clearance commences Friday morning.
