Jerry Gerard , 87, died Dec. 12, 2007, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, WarsawHe was born July 22, 1920, in Warsaw, to Almon and Allee Whitenberger Gerard. On March 21, 1975, in Warsaw, he married Diane Cain, who survives.

10 Years Ago December 22 1997 Warsaw resident Jamie Bowers was recently named Wabash College's outstanding offensive back for the past season. The Little Giants were 6-4 on the season and 4-2 in the ICAC. Bowers caught 31 passes for 433 yards receiving this year and a touchdown. He also rushed 11 times for 58 yards on the season. 25 Years Ago December 22 1982 Four local Boy Scouts received their Eagle Scout award. They are Troy and Chauncey Smith and Jim and Rick McCleary. 50 Years Ago December 22 1957 Two Warsaw High School seniors, Tom Van Osdol, class president, and Saundra Van Curen, were crowned King and Queen of Courtesy in the school auditorium. The coronation climaxed the celebration of Courtesy Week, sponsored annually by the local chapter of Future Homemakers of America. Tom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Dean Van Osdol, and Saundra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Van Curen. 75 Years Ago December 22 1932 A Ford coupe enroute from South Dakota to Pennsylvania, where the three occupants planned to spend Christmas with relatives, stopped here at the Foote Cafe. In addition to the three passengers, the coupe was laden with 45 dressed turkeys which the North Dakotans were taking to hungry relative in Pennsylvania. Some of the turkeys weighed as much as 18 pounds.
10 Years Ago December 21 1997 Ten years ago, Marcia Adams, of Winona Lake, was a weekly food columnist for the Times-Union. Today, Marcia Adams of Fort Wayne has published six cookbooks during the past eight years, her latest cookbook, "New Recipes from Quilt Country," released in October. 25 Years Ago December 21 1982 They didn't have a sleigh or reindeer, but Jerry Scholdroth and Joan Taylor packed up their van recently with gifts collected by the Mental Health Association for delivery to patients at the Bowen Center and resident of local nursing homes. About 600 gifts were donated by local organizations and individuals for the annual Mental Health Association drive. An additional 200 were taken to the Fort Wayne State Hospital. 50 Years Ago December 21 1957 Women of the Moose held formal initiation for five new members: Mrs. Samuel Neher, Mrs. Ivan Neher, Dorothy Landis, Helen Grow and Evelyn Kinsey at the lodge home. Sandy and Lynn Adkinson sang Christmas carols and Mrs. Robert Orcutt appeared as Santa Claus. The attendance prize went to Mrs. Carl Bolinger. 75 Years Ago December 21 1932 A few days ago, Roy E.K. Bowen, Warsaw mail carrier, picked up a letter on North Detroit Street addressed to Santa Claus, at the North Pole. A day or two later the boy who "mailed" the letter said to Bowen, "Say has my letter gone to Santa Claus yet at the North Pole? If not, give it back to me and I will take it to the Warsaw fire station. I think I'll do better there." This happened shortly after the boy had visited the fire station where toys are being collected for distribution to Warsaw children who otherwise would not be remembered on Christmas.

10 Years Ago December 18 1997 The Leesburg Elementary Spell Bowl team took first place in Division 2 of the Indiana Academic Competition for Excellence Nov. 21 at Goshen Middle School. Anna Cornell earned a perfect score in the competition, which has been sponsored by IACE for five years. Other team members are Jaclyn Abrams, Sarah Flinn, Jessica Thorndike, Baxter Burnworth, Derek Weaver, Josh Folk, Chelsy Hershberger, Candice Kissane, Thomas Burnworth and Brittany Rowe. 25 Years Ago December 18 1982 Lake City Bank employees hosted a retirement party in honor of Bruce Wright, who served as president of the bank from 1967-80, and vice chairman of the board and chief executive officer from 1980-82. Wright and his wife, Florine, will spend the winter in Florida and return home to Warsaw in spring. The retiring bank official says he plans to do some bass fishing and refinish antique furniture. 50 Years Ago December 18 1957 Mrs. Adrian Coplen, of 719 E. Fort Wayne St., is convinced that Friday the 13th is not "her day." Arriving home from her duties as deputy clerk Thursday afternoon Mrs. Coplen found her house full of smoke and fumes. This morning there was no heat in the house. To top it off, when she tried to cook breakfast, the stove wouldn't respond. 75 Years Ago December 18 1932 Harriet McCarter last week completed a nurse's training course at the Methodist Hospital in Fort Wayne and is now making her home with her parents in Milford.
