- Liberal Disillusionment - Some Gave All Liberal Disillusionment Editor, Times-Union: I want to thank you for printing the letter from M.Tapp in the Monday paper. It amazes me that there are people who are so eager and willing to believe any shred of information that happens to pop up in front of them on a computer screen. It simply shows that left-wing disillusionment, absolute ignorance and lack of common sense are still alive and well.

Rensberger's Tip Saves Wawasee

SYRACUSE - Time was certainly on Wawasee's side against East Noble Friday. In a slow-moving turn of events, the Warriors' Hannah Rensberger grabbed an airball from Lydia Carpenter and converted the layup as the clock dwindled down to give Wawasee a thrilling 53-51 overtime win over the previously unbeaten Knights. The time was officially four seconds on the clock, but East Noble fans could swear it was longer, the result of a slower trigger finger on the timer.Nevertheless, it was certainly an exciting finish.

Swain, Lantz Named Offensive Players Of The Year

SYRACUSE - Come August, for the first time in a long time, Jordan Swain won't be taking a handoff from Kory Lantz. The most prolific one-two punch in Northern Indiana football will be going their separate ways when the two Wawasee seniors matriculate on their respective college campuses next fall. "We've been playing together since third grade," said Swain."We've been in the same backfield for a long time. We've lost together and won together. If there was one other person I'd want to have the ball, it'd be Kory." Lantz, a two-sport athlete in both football and basketball, recently signed a letter of intent to Bethel College to play hoops.

Valley Opens Season With Overtime Loss To St. Joe

AKRON -ÊFor the past several years, the Tippecanoe Valley basketball team has started the season playing the Warsaw Tigers in a game that went into at least one overtime. This year the opponent was different, the South Bend St.Joseph Indians, but the game still went into overtime. However, the outcome was not quite what Vikings fans would like to see.The Valley squad fell to St.Joe 60-58 in overtime. Valley was down through the entire second half, but the Vikings fought back in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 54-all and send the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Indians gained the upper hand with 3:38 remaining in the four minute overtime period when Daris Whitfield hit a basket to make the score 56-54. However, Alex Frantz hit both shots of a double-bonus free throw opportunity to tie the score at 56.

North Miami Hands T. Valley Third Loss

MENTONE - Maybe one shot from Saturday night's game tells the story for the Valley Vikings this year. After a North Miami jumper with two seconds to play in the third quarter, Valley junior Jarvis Shepherd took the inbounds pass and nailed a shot from about 65 feet away. But the shot came a few ticks late as the buzzer had already sounded to signal the end of the quarter. For the second time in three games, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings went into the fourth quarter in good position to make a run and pick up a win. However, for the second time, Valley let the chance slip away in losing to the North Miami Warriors 68-55 on Saturday night. The loss means that Valley is still looking for its first win just one season after winning a sectional championship. But even more so, it means that the Vikings start conference play on the wrong foot at 0-1.

Whitko Girls Fall To Fort Wayne Elmhurst

SOUTH WHITLEY - Whitko spotted Fort Wayne Elmhurst a 12-point lead but battled back before falling to the Trojans, 75-52. Elmhurst's full-court press frustrated the Wildcats for much of the first half, causing nine first quarter turnovers that led to a 12-0 run.Natasha Gayday led the early Elmhurst charge, scoring five points during the run. "I think ultimately what hurt us was their quickness. That's tough to deal with, especially with a team as scrappy as (Elmhurst). However, I was very pleased with the intensity level we brought to the game," said Whitko head coach Ryan Cunningham. After being unable to even get the ball past halfcourt, Whitko responded valiantly with a 15-2 run of its own.Angie Juricak, Whitko's leading scorer on the night with 15 points, had six of those in the first quarter.

Love Paces Valley Past North Miami

DENVER - Tippecanoe Valley fans just had to love what they saw Saturday night at North Miami. Love, as in Eric Love, that is. Love, a junior, cashed 8 of 10 three-point shots and 10 of 13 attempts overall en route to a season and career high 32 points. With the help of Love's hot hand, Tippecanoe Valley broke open its biggest win of the young season in an 81-59 drilling of North Miami. The 81 points ties a record high for points in the six-year Gregg Sciarra era. Tippecanoe Valley led just 29-26 with two minutes left in the first half, as North Miami managed to keep pace with the veteran Vikes. Valley, with senior scorers Jeffrey Brown and Nick Stutzman struggling from the field, needed a boost from another source to go into halftime on a strong note. The Vikings got it thanks to some beyond the arc-shooting.

Tiger Grapplers Rule Invite

Before Saturday's Warsaw Invitational wrestling meet, Warsaw senior Steve Fribley paced back and forth wearing a sweatshirt with the words 'Think State' in bold letters on the front. "I wear it to keep me from getting distracted," said Fribley."I wore it in track, football and now I'll wear it to every wrestling meet.I want to go to state more than anything." Fribley, his team and five other teams got their first chances on the road to state Saturday when Warsaw hosted a six-team invitational. The Tigers ran away with the team championship, compiling a 5-0 record.Other area schools, Whitko, Triton and Valley, finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Southwood Wallops Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY - So far the Whitko Wildcats football team has been on a roller coaster season. After losing the opener to Wawasee, Whitko rebounded and beat Columbia City last week. Then there was Friday.A 53-20 loss to Three Rivers Conference rival Southwood provided another down point for the Wildcats. "We had one bright point offensively, but defensively, we just did not play well at all," Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger said. That bright point was senior halfback Josh Gonzalez. Gonzalez tallied 192 yards on 11 carries. He had runs for 71, 62 and 56 yards, including one punt return for a touchdown.Whitko quarterback Ben Mohr then hit short-yardage specialist Drew Dial for the 2-point conversion. Outside of the conversion attempt, Mohr did not throw a pass as Whitko kept the ball on the ground the entire time. "I guess it's back to the drawing board, and maybe next week we can tackle and defend those corners," Sprunger said.

Valley Wins 12th Straight TRC Game

AKRON - The Tippecanoe Valley Vikings continued their winnings ways in the Three Rivers Conference with a 28-7 win over visiting Oak Hill Friday night. Valley clung to a 13-7 lead in the fourth quarter before two scores that came less than 40 seconds apart provided the Vikings with much needed breathing room. The first fourth-quarter score came when quarterback Bryce Kelley found senior Aaron Reed from 12 yards out. Sophomore speedster Chad Hoffer was Kelley's next target, reeling in a pass from 27 yards out to cap Valley's scoring for the evening. Oak Hill welcomed back quarterback Matt Middlesworth, who missed several games to injury, last week in the Golden Eagles 37-3 win over Whitko. Middlesworth was adequate but not nearly as effective against the Vikings. The senior signal caller finished 9 of 19 for 100 yards and an interception that came at the hands of O.B.Thompson in the second half to swing the momentum toward Valley.

TRC Football Teams Dome-Bound

The RCA Dome in Indianapolis. For those that get the chance to play for the state title, playing in the RCA Dome is the prize for years of hard work and dedication. For those football players in the Three Rivers Conference, specifically Manchester, Whitko and Valley, getting to the Dome for a state championship this year is still only a dream. However, those three schools along with Oak Hill, Northfield, North Miami, Southwood and Rochester will get the chance on Saturday to play in the confines of the Dome, something they get to do once every four years. The atmosphere is completely different from most Friday night football games in about every way. From the obvious (the roof over top) to the quirky (an astroturf field and television screens with replays high above), the three local schools will get a chance to experience football in a way they have never played before.

Bethel Bounces Grace

WINONA LAKE - When it looked as though a shorthanded Grace volleyball team was going to run out of gas against Bethel Wednesday at Lancer Gym, the only option the Lancers had was to reach down and find the reserve tank of energy inside each one of them because there was no chance to fill up on the bench. The Lancers found the fuel they needed time and time again, but it wasn't enough as the Pilots outlasted Grace in five games 15-10, 10-15, 15-11, 12-15, 15-9. For the entire match, Grace played with six players. There were no substitutions made.Lancer coach Candace Moats didn't have that option. Three of Grace's players will be having surgery this month - two for knee problems and one for a back - and a fourth player sat out with an illness. But the Lancers have been getting used to the situation, having had the limited numbers for about two weeks.

Chances Seem Good For Tiger Spikers

Jamie Byron knew that a swoon was possible. She just didn't know when and whether survival was possible. The first-year Warsaw volleyball coach got her answer Saturday when the Tigers, just coming off a 10-12 run through the last half of the season, whipped a talented Columbia City team in two games to win the school's eighth straight volleyball sectional crown. Against a number of ranked teams, the Tigers' record may have fallen and the play might have seemed sluggish at times, but all the time Warsaw was learning and getting better. Now, their second wind appears to be upon them. "We started out the same at the beginning of the season, and we really hit a drop there in the middle stretch, and we are coming back up now," Byron said."This is a fantastic time for us to start peaking.

Whitko Claims Share Of TRC Title

MENTONE - The Three Rivers Conference has been very tight this year, so tight in fact that both Valley and Whitko volleyball teams had a shot of gaining at least a share of the title on Wednesday despite having two losses each in the conference. For Valley, it is quite a step up from previous seasons when the Vikings never even thought about having a shot at winning the conference. But this has been a record-breaking season for Valley in terms of wins. However, Whitko stepped it up on the road for a 15-7, 15-5 victory that secured a tie for the conference championship. It was the Wildcats' final conference game of the season, while Valley has one left to play with a tough Southwood squad.

Tiger Spikers Fall Short Of Upset

GOSHEN - Most coaches would say this is the greatest thing about high school sports: that on any given day, anybody can beat anybody. And when Warsaw's 17-16 volleyball team took to the court with 28-4 Concord Saturday in the semifinal round of the Goshen Sectional, it almost got the job done. Concord topped the Tigers 15-12, 15-9. "We almost did that (pulled an upset)," said Warsaw coach Tanya Coon."The girls played well. There were some bad calls but I'm not going to blame the game on that.We made some mistakes but we played well." The Minutemen took a quick 3-0 lead in the first game and eventually built it to 5-1, but, as the Tigers would do all afternoon, they fought back Down by four, Warsaw sent junior Andrea Saldivar to the serving line and the Tigers cut the deficit to one. Warsaw kept it close and tied the game at 7 and 10, and at one point were down 14-12.

Letters to the Editor 11-17-1997

- Gun Stories - No Dumping Gun Stories Editor, Times-Union: Saturday morning (Nov.8) Mr.Gerard had an excellent column dealing with the way the media handle gun stories.Wednesday evening we have another glaring example.Indianapolis Monday night two women were slightly wounded when some moron dropped a .32-caliber derringer out of his shirt pocket and the American Health Association is screaming its head off about more gun control. Now don't take me wrong.I'm not trying to minimize the incident; it could have been a whole lot worse. Why any idiot would be carrying such a weapon, let alone in his shirt pocket, is beyond me.But what really blows my mind is the organization's reaction to it.In order to make my point I will take you back a few months and use an example similar to Mr.Gerard's, only in the same town as the accident.

Tiger Grapplers Fall Again

Warsaw wrestlers continue to struggle, losing Wednesday at NorthWood 44-30.The Tiger scoring came by way of a forfeit and five wins on the mat, three by falls and two by narrow decisions. Winning matches for the Tigers were Anthony Boley (103 pounds), David Sumpter (140), Nick McKinley (152), Isaac Perry (160) and Richard Wolfe (171). NorthWood's victories came convincingly with five falls, a technical fall and a solid decision. Warsaw's Tanner Connealy (112) was pinned by senior Jesse Espinoza in 1:32.Espinoza, who is ranked No.12 in the state, now boasts a 23-1 record.Warsaw's Chris Riley (119) was pinned by another senior, Nick Roelandts, in 1:15.ÊAdam Bott (130) scored a takedown but was outscored 7-4 by Brandon Garner.

Whitko Wins Second Straight TRC Match

NORTH MANCHESTER -Ê"Well, it wasn't how I thought we'd win," said Whitko tennis coach Larry Schuh of his team's match against the Manchester Squires."I thought we could take both doubles matches and then maybe snag a singles match. "As it turned out, we snagged two singles matches and one doubles match. We had a few points go our way, or things could have turned out differently." The Wildcats picked up the 3-2 win over Manchester Tuesday evening for their second Three Rivers Conference win in as many days. In the shortest match of the night, Whitko's Emily Crist defeated Manchester's Courtney Ingold 6-1, 6-2 in the No.2 singles match.

Warriors Settle For 167 In Win

"I don't think we played the way we are capable of playing," said Wawasee coach Don Deck."And our scores reflect that." "Tonight we did not perform as well as we have in the past," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert."I think the guys are all a little disappointed." The Warriors and Squires may not have played to their potential, but Wawasee came out on top of Manchester 167-182. One of the reasons for the high scores may have been the hard fast greens the players had to deal with. "The greens were very fast," said Deck."They were hard as a rock.I think that made the scores higher for both teams." "That's part of the game," said Goshert."You just have to play and adjust.Everyone had to deal with it.It's not an excuse, and it should not be an issue." Possibly the most challenging hole of the evening for both teams was a tricky No.7.The green was slanted from back to front, making play difficult.

Tigers Baseball Team Comes Up With Clutch Hits

Warsaw is in unfamiliar territory after its first Northern Lakes Conference baseball game - first place. After dropping their NLC opener each of the past two years, the Tigers began their quest for a conference title with a 4-1 win over Kosciusko County rival Wawasee Monday at Tiger Field. "It (winning the first NLC game) is huge because the last two years we have had decent teams, but we were always looking up and that gets old," Warsaw coach Will Shepherd said."That wears on you.On down the road, it will be big for us." After demonstrating a potent offense for much of its first seven games, Warsaw did things a little differently against the Warriors, scratching and clawing and coming up with the hits and plays when it needed them most.
