Letters to the Editor 12-02-2005

- WW III Is Now - Doctors - The Time Zone Joke - Torture - Only One Holiday - Cheaper Gas - Stolen Snowman WW III Is Now Editor, Times-Union: We finally heard it on national TV last night.Like it or not, we are in World War III.About 10 or 15 years ago the Muslim world declared war on all the non-Muslim world on planet earth.Remember? I do.I didn't write it down when I heard it for the same reason you didn't.We thought: "We've heard that before. We know a little history. We remember the young Mohammed and the bloody start he got in southern Arabia at Mecca and Medina.

Vikings Fail To Reach .500

AKRON - The Tippecanoe Valley Vikings baseball team took the field Wednesday evening fresh off an 8-inning heartbreaking loss Monday to Southwood with sights set on climbing above .500. It was not to be. The Vikings sleepwalked for seven innings in losing to Three Rivers Confenece opponent Northfield 8-2.Valley seemed hung over from the emotional loss Monday by allowing five stolen bases, committing three passed balls and booting a ground ball, thus opening the door for a five-run Northfield fifth inning. The lackluster effort by Valley was not directly traced to its misfortunes, but due in part to a solid pitching performance by Norseman Jason Stanley. Stanley was in total command the entire evening, allowing just four hits in going the distance.

CMA Pounds Valley

MENTONE - As Tippecanoe Valley baseball coach Pat O'Connell stood in the batter's box and hit ground balls to his infielders before Tuesday's game with Culver Military Academy, he became so impressed with his team's practice that he remarked: "Pretty soon you guys will be good enough that I will be able to come here and sit in the dugout like a pro baseball manager." The players methodically went about their business. The fielding was crisp.Infielders gloved ground balls and rifled them over to first. Then the game started. CMA dismantled Valley 16-2 in five innings. The turning point in this game? The first inning, said O'Connell. "Normally, I wouldn't say the first inning would be that big of a key," O'Connell said."But tonight it was big, and I'll tell you why.Last night (Monday) we had a heartbreaker loss, 4-3 to Caston, in a game we should have won.

Memories Of '97: Wilcoxson, Wiggins and Wawasee among top stories of 1997

Changes in two communities and violence against two of the most innocent institutions - a child and a church - were among the top local stories of 1997. By a unanimous choice, Winona Lake's restoration project was the top news story of the year, according to news staffers of the Times-Union and WRSW radio. The massive restoration project, led by town council president Brent Wilcoxson and entrepreneur Dane Miller, spurred debate on several levels. While nobody doubts the project is well intended and will be a major benefit to the town, questions arose regarding Wilcoxson's role since some of the $7 million project has involved town council approval. While Wilcoxson, a first-term elected official, stayed busy with the widespread renovation project, the longtime leader of the adjoining city of Warsaw was stepping aside. After 13 years as mayor, Jeff Plank resigned and left office March 1 to join InstruMed, an upstart firm located in Warsaw.

Two Local Men Fought On Iwo Jima During World War II

As Allied Forces broke through the German front and brought Hitler's army to it's knees in early 1945, the outcome of World War II Pacific campaigns had yet to be determined. The U.S.declared war on Japan the day after Dec.7, 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The Philippines, Wake Island, Guam, Malaya, Thailand, Shanghai and Midway also were taken as the Japanese continued their furious assault in the Pacific Ocean. At the height of its power, the Japanese Empire controlled all islands in the Philippine and South China seas, held much of China and had invaded Korea, Manchuria, Berma, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.Half of New Guinea was under Japanese rule. Over the next three years U.S.troops fought in places with names like Luzon, Bataan, Tarawa and Tinian. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles was held on the island of Iwo Jima.

Wagon Wheel Performers Talk About Ties To NYC

Perhaps more than any other group of professionals, actors have ties to New York City, either having lived there or knowing people who do. The leading actors of "The Music Man" on stage now at the Ramada Wagon Wheel Theatre are no exception. "My girlfriend watched the first building burn as the plane hit the second tower from her office window," said Rod Thomas, now based in New York.He was in Chicago Sept.11 performing the lead role in "big, the musical." The part earned him a Joseph Jefferson Award for best principal actor in a musical Nov.5. Thomas returns to the round stage for the role of Prof.Harold Hill after a season-long absence. "My immediate feelings were that what I do is so inadequate," he said."Slowly you come out of that." Friend and fellow actor Mickey Fisher agreed. "I've been on top of the twin towers, it is so scary, the loss of those buildings and the way they were brought down," he said.

Legislators Studying Blood Alcohol, Reassessment

Editor's note: This is the second of three parts. The amount of federal highway funds received by a state will soon depend on a state's willingness to lower alcohol concentrations to .08 percent (Senate Bill 08 and House Bill 1618). State Senator Kent Adams (R-Warsaw) and State Representatives David Wolkins (R-Dist 18) and Bill Ruppel (R-Dist.22) visited with guests of the Kosciusko County Farm Bureau Saturday, giving a legislative update. The lowering of blood and breath alcohol concentrations was discussed by Wolkins and Ruppel. No one in attendance argued with its reasonableness. Ruppel co-authored this bill and tucked on a forgiving amendment for first-time offenders. "I realize there will be people who don't know how much they can drink before they're at .08," he said.
