Letters to the Editor 04-28-2004

- Supports Daniels - Supports Sanders - Abstain From Sex Supports Daniels Editor, Times-Union: There is a need for change in the leadership of the State of Indiana. If we look for a moment at our home of Kosciusko County, and then look beyond its borders to the other communities that comprise our great state, we will see a foundation for reform and a basis for rethinking the governmental strategies for putting Indiana in a positive position relative to other states.

Tiger Boys Continue Turnaround, Win Third Straight Game

As if this season was one big puzzle, the pieces continue to fall in place for Doug Ogle and his Warsaw boys basketball team. Now playing at full strength with the return of starters Michael Moore and William Knepper, the Tigers continued their turnaround with a 59-39 win over visiting Northern Lakes Conference foe NorthWood Friday night. Something Warsaw hasn't been able to do until the last two games, the Tigers won Friday with team depth - as well as an extremely efficient offense and stingy defense.

The Warriors Begin Building With 20-0 Win

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊThe Wawasee football team wears T-shirts bearing the phrase "BUILDING A TRADITION" across the back. The Warriors took a leap toward their ultimate goal Friday night when they defeated the Whitko Wildcats 20-0. After a turnover, an interception and several punts led to a first-half stalemate, the Whitko Wildcats stayed in the lockerroom a little too long and earned an 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to start the second half. The Whitko third quarter went downhill from there. Seth Slater gained 10 yards for the Wildcats on the first play of the quarter but fumbled to give Wawasee possession of the football on the Whitko 45-yard-line with 11:45 still remaining in the third.

NorthWood Girls Keep On Winning

INDIANAPOLIS -ÊThe officials were the story of the night as NorthWood (3A) defeated Fort Wayne Luers (2A) 62-61 in the first round of the tournament of champions Friday night. When asked about the game's officiating, NorthWood girls basketball coach Steve Neff quickly answered, "No comment."But Luers coach Gary Andrews had a bit more to say about the whole situation. "We really got screwed," said Andrews."The officiating in this game was a travesty. You would think they would have officials worthy of a tournament of champions.I was upset with the obvious fouls. "When somebody gets their arm ripped off, it is usually a foul, but apparently not tonight.

Survey Says I Am Fully Out Of Step

It's difficult when you come to the realization that you're out of step with the majority of Americans. That's what has happened to me over this whole mess with President Bill Clinton. According to the polls, the majority of Americans don't think Clinton should be impeached. In fact, only about 25 percent of them think he should. That puts me squarely in the minority. This is difficult for me to understand. Some people say that this is just about sex.I see it as being about perjury, witness tampering and obstruction of justice. More people say that it's about perjury, witness tampering and obstruction of justice, but they don't think it warrants impeachment. Lying to a federal grand jury is a felony punishable by five years in prison. If that isn't an impeachable offense, what is? I know that Clinton's attorneys are scurrying to come up with a defense. They say his answers are "legally accurate" or that the questions were "non-specific" or whatever.

TV's Defense Scores In Opener

AKRON - After completely revamping its offense over the summer, Tippecanoe Valley's football team got all the offense it needed in Friday's 13-0 season-opening win over North Judson from its defense. The Vikings scored their first touchdown of the 2000 season with 3:06 remaining on the third-quarter clock on a 35-yard interception return by six-foot, 160-pound senior B.J.Cunningham.Junior Chris Hurd converted on the extra-point kick to make the score 7-0. With 9:42 remaining in the game, six-foot, 205-pound junior inside linebacker Caleb Shewman put Valley up 13-0 with a 23-yard interception return of his own.Hurd's extra-point attempt was blocked. "I'm proud and tickled to death that our defense got two scores tonight," eleventh-year Valley coach Scott Bibler said."It was a great defensive effort, which is what we needed. We put in a new offense, we needed our defense to come through." And come through the defense did.

Pierceton Man Arrested In Vermont Murder

A Pierceton man was arrested Friday evening in connection with a fatal bombing in Vermont after apparently becoming disgruntled with a business transaction via the Internet. Chris William Dean, 35, of 3175 S.CR 600E, was taken into custody without incident at a friend's house on Chestnut Street in Winona Lake. The pipe bomb blast from a package Dean allegedly sent through UPS killed 17-year-old Christopher Marquis of Fair Haven, Vt., and seriously injured his 52-year-old mother, Sheila Rockwell, when the device exploded in their home. The blast was reported at about 3 p.m.Thursday and occurred in a bedroom of the victims' house, located behind that town's police station. Local police got involved in the investigation about 11:30 p.m.Thursday.How the focus of the investigation turned to Dean was not revealed.
