Teams Chase Warsaw At Wawasee Tennis Sectional

When it comes right down to it, there's no question who the favorite is in the Wawasee Girls Tennis Sectional: Warsaw. Ask any coach and any player, and they would probably say the same thing. There's no doubt this year's Warsaw squad is tough. The Tigers have played three of four possible sectional opponents, Whitko, Tippecanoe Valley and Wawasee, and beat each of them 5-0.

Wawasee Wins NLC Match, Championship

SYRACUSE -Ê"It's hard to beat home-cooking." Those were the thoughts of Warsaw golf coach Ben Barkey immediately after Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference championship. It was the second year in a row that the Wawasee Warriors won the event, this time at their home course in Syracuse, South Shore Golf Club. The Warriors shot a remarkable, two-over-par score of 290 to take the event by 12 shots over Concord's score of 302.Warsaw was a shot back at 303 with Plymouth at 305. Warsaw, Wawasee, and Concord all came into the event with identical conference records of 6-1, as Wawasee had beaten Concord, Concord had beaten Warsaw, and Warsaw had beaten Wawasee. The round robin standings coupled with the finish in conference championships would determine the final conference standings so everything was up in the air, but it was Wawasee that finished on top with Concord taking second overall and the Tigers third.

No Mustache Means No Earnhardt

INDIANAPOLIS - There are some things about certain athletes that just make them stand out among others in their respective professions. Who couldn't spot that basketball player with the bald dome and wagging tongue and not know it was Michael Jordan? Most people have seen the way Sammy Sosa and Ken Griffey Jr.play the game of baseball with a splash of vibrant youth, not to mention their hard to miss ear-to-ear smiles. In the world of stock car racing, seven-time Winston Cup Champion Richard Petty will always be known for his tall cowboy hat, big belt buckle, cowboy boots and an unforgettable smile partially covered up by his moustache. Dale Earnhardt, also a seven-time Winston Cup Champion, was also well known for his mustache and greeting smile. I have an 8-by-10 picture of Earnhardt, the man more commonly known to the fans as the "Intimidator."In the picture he has a grin from ear to ear and a smile that could speak a thousand words.

Three Tied For Lead At Indiana Open

A stiff breeze and tough pin placement couldn't deter three professionals from shooting a 3-under-par 68 in the opening round of the 90th Pepsi Indiana Open at Stonehenge Golf Club. Chris Eckerle of Indianapolis, Bill Schumaker of Crooked Lake Golf Club in Columbia City and Alan Schulte of Hawthorn's Golf Course led the way with 68s. Schulte fired a 33 on the front nine, while Schumaker and Eckerle each carded a 33 on the back nine. It's a family affair at this year's Indiana Open as Schumaker's brother Dave and nephew Jeff are all competing in the tournament. Dave is the professional at Stonehenge and shot an 81 on the first day, while his son Jeff, the assistant pro at Stonehenge, shot a 75 to leave him tied for 39th.

Nobody Shines In Washington These Days

The more I watch the drama unfold in Washington, the more it starts to look like a comedy. A comedy of errors. Everybody is spewing contradictions.Everybody is partially in the wrong. All the politicians are playing it for their political gain. If it wasn't so tragic it would almost be funny. Take the president's videotaped testimony. I realize that the president is a skilled attorney as well as a politician, but I think he got a little carried away at times. My favorite lawyerism was when Clinton was asked the simple, straightforward question: "Were you ever alone in the White House with Monica Lewinsky?" The answer? "That depends on how you define the word 'alone.'" Then he went on to explain that there were other people in the White House when they were together so technically they weren't alone. Then it dawned on me.

Warriors Embrace Favorite Role

SYRACUSE -ÊThis year's Wawasee girls basketball team's roster is almost identical to last year's, but the Warriors' situation is much different coming into the regional this time around. Last year, the Warriors surprised NorthWood to win the sectional title; this year the Warriors were the favorites. Last year, the Wawasee squad headed into the regional at Columbia City as the underdog; this year as the 23-0 Warriors face 18-5 Concordia they are anything but. Last year, Wawasee coach Kem Zolman wished he had more time to prepare for the regional; this year he is ready to get back on the court as soon as possible.

Squires Defensive About Regional Chance

NORTH MANCHESTER - Gatorade may want to become an official sponsor of the Manchester Squires girls basketball team. The sports drink has been flowing in North Manchester this week in preparation for the Squires run at a regional crown. "I've talked to a lot of coaches about playing in a regional and they said that one thing that is often over-looked is keeping your team hydrated," said Manchester head coach Mark Underwood. So it's safe to say that Manchester is leaving nothing to chance. The Squires play the second game of the South Adams regional Saturday at noon against Taylor (20-3). Prairie Heights (7-15) and Fort Wayne Harding (14-7) play in the day's first game at 10 a.m. The championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Manchester (21-2) was ranked seventh in the final 2A poll of the season while Taylor finished ranked third. While both teams have had similar success, they couldn't play more dissimilarly.

Disagreement Is OK, But Lying Isn't

I really don't care if you agree or disagree with the assault weapons ban. Regardless of what you think about assault weapons, the debate about them should be honest. And it just isn't. People are lying to you.Don't you hate it when people lie to you? Politicians on both sides of the aisle stretch the truth to make a point. They exaggerate on lots of issues. When it comes to guns, the exaggeration knows no bounds. In the assault weapon debate, you listen to the anti-gun people and they paint a picture of criminals spraying schoolyards and neighborhoods with military-type automatic weapons. First of all, the things are not automatic weapons, and they are not military weapons.

BOURBON - The Class A state champions from the last two years clash when Triton's girls basketball team faces Clinton Prairie in Saturday's Triton 1A Semistate.

Triton (20-3) and Clinton Prairie (16-8) follow the first game between Union City (14-8) and Adams Central (14-10), which tips off at 10 a.m. To get its state title, Triton had to go through Clinton Prairie. The Gophers gave Triton its toughest challenge in the tournament leading to the state championship.Triton beat Clinton Prairie 59-53 last year; Triton beat every other sectional, regional and semistate opponent by at least 18 points. This year Triton is ranked No.1 in Class A, while Clinton Prairie failed to crack the top 10.But veteran coach Connie Garrett, in her 30th year, appears to have the Gophers rolling.Clinton Prairie, 9-7 at one point, has won seven of its last eight to boost its record to 16-8.

Panthers Take Sectional 64-54

NAPPANEE -ÊGoing into the NorthWood Sectional, the Panthers had played all five of their possible opponents during the season. The Panthers lost to No.10 Lakeland, Angola and Northridge in regular-season play. Then NorthWood's boys basketball team avenged the loss to Lakeland with a 63-56 win in the first round of the sectional Tuesday. Then the Panthers got back at Angola with a 70-59 win in Friday's sectional semifinal. And finally, NorthWood downed Northridge 64-54 Saturday to win its first sectional since 1995.It is the just the second sectional championship in NorthWood history. "The kids wanted to play Northridge because I think they felt they did not play well the first time we played them," said NorthWood coach Dan Gunn. But the win was not a cakewalk for the Panthers.

Parker, Peden Are Wanted, Needed

NORTH MANCHESTER - The signs in Manchester High School's hallway say the two girls are wanted. One has a picture of 5-foot-5 senior guard Katie Parker and reads: Wanted ...Katie Parker ...For grand theft auto ...Known for driving the lane.Another has a picture of 5-6 senior guard Jodie Peden and reads: Wanted ...Jodie Peden ...For grand larceny theft ...Known to steal from opponents. To Manchester coach Jody Shewman, these two guards - known as "Park" and "Pedo" by their teammates - are the two most unheralded reasons the Squires are 20-3 and competing in Saturday's Logansport 2A Semistate. Manchester forward Megan Eckert has always gotten attention for scoring nearly 20 points per game. And recently the story line of choice has been Jessica Hicks, a 5-10 freshman who went from averaging six points per game in the regular season to 19.7 in the postseason. But it's Parker and Peden who allow Eckert and Hicks to score by getting them the ball when they're open.

Character Issue Won't Buoy Dole

If the polls are accurate (accuracy of political polls could be a whole column by itself), I am alarmed at the state of the nation. The latest ABC News political poll came out Wednesday. It contained some amazing data. Probably the most amazing item dealt with who the voters thought was most likely to tell the truth. Most voters thought it was Bob Dole, but said they would vote for Bill Clinton anyway. Equally as amazing was a different poll that showed most people thought Bill Clinton would do a better job fighting drugs than Bob Dole. But to me, the most interesting item in the ABC poll was the character versus empathy issue. The character issue may be a loser for Bob Dole.Dole has turned to sharper attacks against what he perceives is a lack of character in Bill Clinton. But the poll showed voters are more concerned about who best understands their problems.

Actually, Do-Nothing Isn't All Bad

So now the debate in politics is over education. That seems to be the hot topic. And of course the Democrats are firing barbs at the "do-nothing Congress." Now, how many of you have heard that phrase "do-nothing Congress" on the nightly news? Especially on the topic of education, the Democrats are railing on the Republicans in hopes of gaining momentum for the November election. Hey, I don't blame them for that. That's politics.Problem is, the mainstream national media pretty much give them a free pass. Ever seen an accounting of the "do-nothing" Republicans' record on education in the current Congress? Just education? Didn't think so. This Republican-led Congress has approved a bunch of initiatives to help fix the country's schools. You may not agree with them.I don't agree with all of them, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist.

Two Local Players To Compete In All-Star Game

The South Bend All-Star game, which features All-Area boys basketball players against All-Metro players, takes place tonight. Of the 17 All-Area players, only three are from local teams: Warsaw junior guard Chris Wiggins, Triton senior Matt Savill and NorthWood senior forward Darin Nunemaker. Players from the South Bend/Elkhart area comprise the All-Metro team. The game starts at 7 p.m.at Bethel College's Wiekamp Center. Wiggins is one of six All-Area players who cannot play in the game.Underclassmen may be selected but are ineligible to play. The 6-foot-4 Wiggins delivered in every category for the Tigers, averaging 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.He led the team in scoring and steals. He shot 51 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free-throw line.He hit 41 percent of his three-pointers. Nunemaker turned in statistics nearly identical to Wiggins.

Warriors Place 10th At State Swim Meet

INDIANAPOLIS - His head newly shorn like the swimmers he coached, Wawasee swim coach Roger Karns sat on a set of metal bleachers next to the practice/warm-up pool at the IUPUI Natatorium Saturday afternoon. Waiting. All his swimmers had finished their contests, and he was waiting to find out where his Warriors finished in the overall team competition. "I know we are somewhere between 10th and 15th," said Karns, "but we won't know until this race is finished." So he went from waiting to watching as the 400 freestyle relay began and a lightning-fast race followed. Then he went back to waiting, this time for the team results to be anounced. When the announcement was finally made, Karns and his Warriors learned they had earned the 10th-place spot in the state wih 82 total points.

Ten-Run First Inning Lifts Warsaw Over Wawasee

Three three-run homers. Eight hits. Ten runs. Two hit batters. Two errors. Not bad stats for a baseball game. How 'bout for the bottom half of an inning? That's exactly what happened in the bottom of the first inning in Warsaw when the Tigers hosted Northern Lakes Conference rival Wawasee Monday night. Warsaw then held the Warriors scoreless for four more innings to finish the game in five innings on the 10-run rule. Things started out well for the Warriors as Dan Milligan hit a single past Warsaw's short stop with one out to get the ball rolling. Brent Doty followed with a single down the right-field line that sent Milligan to third, putting runners on the corners with just one out.

Tigers Triumph At Truex

Warsaw responded by shattering two meet records in the first event, sending a message to the rest of the field. The Tigers went on to break away from a tight field through most of the meet to win their second Max Truex Invitational, breaking Elkhart Central's three-year hold on the trophy. Warsaw scored 137 points, while Elkhart Central ended second with 122 Friday. "A pessimist would say that the competition at this meet was not as strong," Akers said."But we set four meet records, and when you look at the strong Elkhart Central teams that have been here in the past, we still had to run well to break those records." The unique scoring system used in the meet kept an emphasis on depth. Each of the eight schools at the event had two entrants in each event. Those two times or distances were added up and the resulting total became each school's result.

Warsaw Couple Faces Charges In Odometer Altering

After a bust by the Indiana State Police Wednesday, a Warsaw couple faces multiple felony charges for their alleged involvement in a used vehicle sales scam. Investigators say Karen N.Gottschalk, 37, and Chad A.Gottschalk, 38, both of 2028 S.Maple Run, Warsaw, allegedly tampered with odometers, forged titles and documents and misrepresented sales to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles for at least 100 vehicles throughout the United States.
