Letters to the Editor 03-11-1999

- Dangerous Road - Winona Fire Department - Schizophrenic - Newspaper Dangerous Road Editor, Times-Union: Approximately six months ago, a speeding motorist killed my dog in front of my house in broad daylight, and did not stop.At that time, I wrote a "Letter to the Editor" regarding this, and I also put up signs in my yard trying to get motorists to slow down.My dog getting killed is what provoked me to do this, but I also had and have a concern regarding the traffic on this stretch of road.County Road 475 is a short cut from Warsaw to North Webster, and without many houses from 300N for three-fourths of a mile down, many feel no need to slow down.

- Safety Concerns - History Lesson - Church And State - Rewriting Our Roots - Outraged Safety Concerns Editor, Times-Union: Certain events occur in our lives that cause us to change our focus and perspective of the world around us.That event for myself is the nearing birth of my and my wife's first child. The impending birth of our child has caused me to look at things very differently in regards to safety.

Surging Warsaw Girls Hold Off Rival Wawasee

While winter is a time for hibernation, the Warsaw girls basketball team may be waking from its early season slumber. After a 2-4 record, the worst in school history, the Tigers are starting to show that there's life after Jaclyn Leininger. Warsaw used a 38-26 rebounding edge and an effective 17-point performance from Julie Seiss to top Northern Lakes Conference and county rival Wawasee 48-36, Saturday night. Earlier in the week, Warsaw knocked off a one-loss Columbia City squad. As a potential matchup with state-ranked South Bend St.Joseph's in Warsaw's Holiday Tournament looms large, the Tigers avoided a letdown. Both Warsaw and Wawasee looked to be in a shooting haze as the teams combined to shoot 35 of 95 from the field. The Tigers' ability to get after loose balls was the deciding factor.

Panthers Arrive For Second Half

NAPPANEE - The NorthWood Panthers have had an outstanding boys basketball season. They are the Northern Lakes Conference champions, the first time in school history that the Panthers have won the title by themselves, They finished the regular season at 14-6, only losing one home game all year. After all the positives for the Panthers, they were very excited to host their own sectional.Coming into the Class 3A NorthWood Sectional on Tuesday, this sectional was rated the seventh toughest sectional in the state according to Jeff Sagarin's ratings. In order for the Panthers to move on to Friday's semi-final game, they would have to beat NLC rival Wawasee first. The Panthers, who beat Wawasee 70-41 during the regular season had a lot at stake. After playing sloppy basketball the first half, the Panthers picked up their intensity and ended the Warriors' season winning 62-48.

Warrior Golf Team Deals With Increased Expectations

Wawasee's boys golf team went 15-3 and finished 13th at last year's state finals. Because they returned four starters from that team, they found themselves ranked No.5 in the high school golf preseason poll. A ranking, said coach Don Deck, that was probably not accurate. The Warriors opened their season earlier than most local teams, competing two weeks ago in the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational and then competing last week in the Hall of Fame Invitational. "We got the crap kicked out of us by the southern schools," Deck said, "but they were three to four weeks ahead of us.We went from being way overrated to being unrated." At the same time, Deck acknowleged, "We did not play anywhere near to our capabilities." Where the Warriors should be ranked may be up for debate, but barring a catastrophe, they should be one of the best teams in the area.

Let's Enforce The Laws We Already Have

Again this week, there was a nut with a gun. And surely next week, there will be someone proposing more gun laws. It's almost guaranteed. It's always tragic and disturbing when innocent people are gunned down by a lunatic. In the latest case, a white supremacist named Benjamin Smith drove across two states firing at minorities. Two people were killed and several were wounded. The shooter killed himself as police closed in. Smith tried to buy guns at two gun shops but was turned down because he flunked the background checks.Apparently, there was a restraining order against him. That was good enough to flag him in the computer and the gun shops tossed him out. No biggie. He bought a couple guns from an unlicensed individual. And that brings me to the point of this column - the obvious and pervasive lack of enforcement of existing gun laws. Why will some guy sell guns on the street without a license? Because he can.

I'd Rather Not Watch CBS News

OK, if there was ever a doubt about liberal bias in network news media, I think we can safely say CBS erased it with its document debacle. I wish I could find unvarnished news.It would be refreshing. Fox is kind of like a GOP cheerleading network.Their motto should be, "We report, you decide how good the Republicans are doing." I guess I don't see Fox as fair and balanced. But then there are the CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN crews who lean the other way. They're not fair and balanced either. I see CNN every day. It's fun - sometimes - to listen to Jack Cafferty belittle the president of the United States. The media have come a long way.Remember when Walter Cronkite was polled the most trusted man in America? Those days are long gone. Now, journalists rate right up there with politicians and snake oil salesmen on the scale of trustworthiness. I know there is no such thing as bias-free news.
