Tax Cuts: When Paying Enough Is Enough

I think sometimes that people don't fully understand what a tax cut is. I see editorials and op-ed pieces all the time about how irresponsible it would be if the Republicans got their way and we had a big tax cut. Just for the record: A tax cut is not a refund. It is not a rebate. It is not money taken out of the federal coffers and returned to us.It is a reduction in the amount of money the government will collect from us in the future. Frankly, I don't see how that could be a bad thing. When I hear politicians argue against tax cuts, it's as if they are trying to say we haven't yet paid quite enough in taxes. They talk about the big debt "we" owe. If the government is in debt, there can only be two causes. Either they didn't collect enough money or they spent too much money. Which do you believe it is? Some politicians, I think, actually believe they don't collect enough money from us. And they bristle at the thought of collecting less.

Judge Orders Rubber Returned To Atwood Recyclers

A judge has ordered that a bunch of processed tires be turned over to Atwood Recyclers Inc. The recycled product - about three truck loads - was left behind at the Atwood tire dump after the company broke off plans to recycle tires with tire dump owner Garry Baker. Atwood Recyclers filed suit Sept.26 claiming Baker and another defendant, Robert Grindle, were attempting to move the by-products.A temporary injunction was filed in Kosciusko Circuit Court. On Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed ordered the property turned over to Atwood recyclers, which placed an approximate value of $25,000 on the tires. Atwood Recyclers earlier this year broke off cooperative efforts with Baker to recycle millions of tires at the dump under a state plan.As a result of the broken deal, the state has stepped in and is preparing an emergency cleanup.

Library Approves Privately Funded Addition

Warsaw Community Public Library Board on Tuesday approved paperwork that will allow for the privately funded wing of the new addition. The changes amount to $156,000. Total anticipated cost of the project is $4,184,702. The entire project is being done in two phases, the first of which involves expanding the building to the west. That phase is expected to be complete by September.Afterward, renovations on the current facility will begin. The entire project is slated to be finished by April 1, 1998. Also Monday, the board delayed action on bids to remove an underground storage tank, which needs to be removed before other steps in the project can go forward. Removal of the tank is complicated by its proximity to various utility lines and North Detroit, which is part of Ind.15. Bids varied greatly, in part, because some contractors were unaware of the complications.

Commerce Panel OKs Coats' Anti-Porn Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Senate Commerce Committee Friday passed U.S.Sen.Dan Coats' anti-pornography bill. The Communications Decency Act, targets commercial distribution of pornography on the World Wide Web. "This is a great victory, and the first big step on the way to the Senate floor," said Coats.
