Wawasee Season Ends With 1-0 Loss

Angola -ÊAny time Wawasee senior left-hander Drew Gradle takes the mound, you can generally count on two things. One, Gradle keeps his baseball team in the ballgame. Two, Wawasee has a hard time scoring runs. The Wawasee Warriors saw their 2000 season come to a close 1-0 at the hands of the Lakeland Lakers at the Angola Class 3A Sectional 21 Tuesday. The first game of sectional play generally pits the opposing aces of both teams.Tuesday evening proved to be a classic pitchers' duel with Laker Mitch Todd getting the upper hand.Ê The lone run of the contest was scored in Lakeland's half of the second.Ê With the bases loaded and only one out, Lakeland coach Craig Harp called for Geoff Fry to lay down a safety squeeze. Fry bunted back to Gradle, who looked at home for the force but decided to get the sure out at first, thus scoring Brandon Kearns.

"I am so excited for the girls," said Whitko coach Jennifer Carr."They have come such a long way in the last four years.People come up to me and say that I've done a good job, but all I've done is demand that the girls give their best. They have done all the work. Wawasee, NorthWood Start Girls Soccer Programs

SYRACUSE - Wawasee is starting its girls soccer program from even further behind than most. That is because, despite an enthusiasm from the girls of the school system to start the team, the experience is a little behind.Make that a lot behind. "One of our problems is that we have no girls who have had any kind of travel league experience," Wawasee coach Rick Shipley said."We had to start with the lines on the field and what they are.It has been tough for us.We had to start from virtually nothing. It will take several years for us to get caught up with the rest of the conference." Wawasee lost the debut game of its program 2-0 to East Noble Thursday. Most teams are able to start practice with learning new plays and new techniques, but with the Warriors, the rules of the game have come first.

Warsaw Gains Revenge Over Col. City In Big Way

COLUMBIA CITY - Warsaw did a good job last year of avenging wins from the previous year. The Tigers opened up the 1998 campaign in similar fashion. The Tigers got revenge for a season-opening loss last year to Columbia City by rolling over the Eagles 30-14 Friday at Gandy Field. It wasn't a perfect opener for the Tigers, but they got the right mix of big plays on offense, defense and special teams to come away with the big win. "This is huge to come back against a team that beat us soundly last year," Warsaw coach Phil Jensen said."The kids have responded to this whole thing as a challenge and met it head on.They don't do it perfectly. They are not there yet, but we are a lot closer to there than we were." Jose Esquivel led the Tigers' offense with 114 yards on the ground in only 3-1/2 quarters. And the defense, which gave up over 300 yards rushing last year to Columbia City, held the Eagles to only 69 on the ground this year.

Wawasee Dethroned As Regional Champs

BREMEN - A lot has changed in a year's time for Alysha Aalbregtse and the Wawasee girls track team. Aalbregtse, who led Wawasee to a regional team title last year by winning the 100 and 300 hurdles, has been slowed by an injury this season and really has been back for only a month. While still getting back into shape, Aalbregtse finished second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Both performances were good enough to advance Aalbregtse to the state meet on June 7. "I am happy I qualified, and that is my main goal," Aalbregtse said."It was kind of upsetting that I didn't repeat, but that is expected because this is my sixth or seventh meet (back).I am on my way back.

Lone Senior Wins Medallist Honors, Leads Tiger Golfers Past Tippecanoe Valley

WINONA LAKE - Loaded with talented underclassmen, Warsaw's varsity boys golf team was led Wednesday by its lone senior. Ben Brodhead, who normally plays lower in lineup but played in the No.1 spot for Senior Night, played the last regular season match of his career Wednesday at Stonehenge Golf Club and went out a winner. After starting out three strokes over par on the first three holes of Stonehenge's front nine, Ben Brodhead tuned up his game and finished with a par score of 35, earning match medallist honors and leading 14th-ranked Warsaw to a 144-174 win over visiting Tippecanoe Valley.

Stonehenge, Raccoon Have Double Aces

Think about how rare a hole-in-one is.Then think about how much of a rarity two in the same day on the same course would be.Then think about those two holes-in-one being on the same hole on the same day. The percentages would go through the roof. But it happened, not once, but twice in the recent weeks at Stonehenge and Raccoon Run golf courses. At Stonehenge, back on May 22. By the time Chad Huffer strolled into the clubhouse to report his hole-in-one in the morning, Stonehenge pro Dave Schumaker was just glad to see someone get the first ace of the season. He was even more excited when John Clay came in the afternoon with the second ace.But it quickly turned to amazement when he realized it was on the same hole (No.7) as Huffer's.

Hey, Harry Caray: Hang It Up

All things, good or bad, eventually come to an end. The Beatles with an A.Walter Cronkite on the news. The Cosby Show.Mike Ditka and the Chicago Bears.Jan and Marsha. Sadly enough, a sports broadcasting icon has reached that end. The problem is, the man himself - Harry Caray - doesn't realize it. Do I realize what I'm saying? That what I'm doing is asking WGN or the Chicago Cubs to politely shove a legend out of the TV booth? Yes and yes. The Atlanta Braves and Cubs played a doubleheader at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. Here is what I heard and what others told me they heard during those two games: 12:05 p.m.- First game starts. Not 30 minutes into game, Harry calls Doug Glanville "Glavine."Not once, not twice.Says it numerous times.Hmmm, I think, Does Atlanta starting pitcher now roam outfield for Cubs? Doug Glanville plays left field for Cubs.Tom Glavine pitches for Braves, but not on this day.

Collge Roundup

WINONA LAKE - If nothing else, the Grace College men's soccer team is learning to deal with adversity like never before. The Lancers remained unbeaten Saturday with a scoreless tie against Trinity Christian that left fans of the soccer team wondering whether there is anything that the team won't respond positively to. After Grace's only goalkeeper was found to be ineligible just hours before the team's opener Thursday, the coaching staff quickly found replacement John Leopold out of a men's dorm on campus. He stepped in and made seven saves as the Lancers defeated Indiana Tech 2-1.

Wawasee Starts Season With 34-6 Win Over Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY -Ê"We were so close, but it's the simple things that we didn't do," said Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger after his team's 34-6 season-opening loss to Wawasee. Sprunger's Wildcats held Wawasee scoreless early, but the Whitko squad was unable to stop the Warriors as the game progressed. Wawasee moved the ball early, taking the pigskin all the way down to Whitko's 4-yard line on the first drive of the game. However, Whitko's defense stifled the Warriors and forced them to turn the ball over on downs deep in Wildcat territory. "We started put pretty fast," said Wawasee coach Joe Rietveld."But then we stumbled in the red zone early." The Whitko squad took the ball on its own 6-yard line and opened the first offensive drive of the season with a 39-yard break-away run by Tyler Wilkinson. The Wildcats moved the ball to the Warrior 28, but finished the drive by turning the ball over on downs.

Local Boys Compete At Kokomo Regional

KOKOMO -Ê#Although they set personal records, several Manchester High School competitors left the Kokomo Regional a bit disappointed. The Squire 400 relay team of Greg Lengel, Matt Barker, Caleb Clark and Nate Stoops set a personal record with a time of 43.96; however, they finished the race in fourth place overall.Since only the top three teams advance to the state finals June 5 in Bloomington, the Squires missed a state berth by less then two-tenths of a second. The team from South Bend St.Joseph's recorded a time of 43.79 to take third place. "The 4X100 relay team got a PR.They PRed by six-tenths of a second," said Manchester coach Matt Barker."They bettered their seed by two spots and their splits were excellent.

Warsaw Improves To 9-0 On The Season

SYRACUSE -ÊEven though Warsaw started school Tuesday, the girls golf team found the time to travel to Maxwelton Golf Course in Syracuse to face off against Northern Lakes Conference opponents Wawasee and NorthWood. And while Warsaw's girls tend to have trouble with the tricky Maxwelton, the Tigers finished the evening with a 188.Wawasee was close behind with a 195, and NorthWood rounded out the trio with a 236. "Today was a bit different for us," said Warsaw coach Bob Turner."We're not used to playing after school. This was our first day of school, and the kids' minds were elsewhere. They were excited about getting back and seeing all their friends. "And we never play well at this course. It's tough." But don't get Turner wrong. He's anything but disappointed in his team.

Indiana All-Stars Top Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS -ÊAlthough Miss Basketball Shanna Zolman is one of the most recognized players in the state of Indiana, some people still have trouble remembering how to say where she's from. Including her Indiana All-Star coach Donna Cheatham. In a postgame press conference, Cheatham referred to last week's Junior All-Star game at Zolman's alma mater "Wa-WAW-see." "WAW-waw-see," interjected Zolman with a smile. "Zolman territory," continued Cheatham. While the Tennessee-bound Zolman had the worst game of her career in Indianapolis at Saturday's Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Game, the Indiana squad picked up a 72-65 win over Kentucky to avenge last week's 79-77 loss in Owensboro, Kentucky.

With Regional Championship, Warsaw Moves Closer To Goal

MIDDLEBURY -ÊAfter a loss to Penn in last year's semistate, the Warsaw tennis team set a goal for this season. "The girls set a goal to get to semistate and to win semistate," said Warsaw coach Rick Orban."So far they have not wavered from it.They have been very focused on their goal all year, and they will not be satisfied if they don't win semistate." The Tiger squad moved one step closer to that goal Wednesday evening by defeating Concord 4-1 in the final round of the Northridge Regional.
