ML Motorsports Moving To Busch Series

MARNE, Mich.- Chad Blount's win steak came to an end Saturday night at Berlin Raceway, as did his Warsaw-based stock car team's stay in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. After five full seasons of ARCA competition, ML Motorsports is leaving the ARCA RE/MAX Series and will focus its efforts on fielding a NASCAR Busch Series team. Blount and Team 67, which entered Saturday's Request/Sara Lee 200 presented by GFS Marketplace steering for their third straight win, finished seventh, and after what team management called a series of "unfair and unreasonable rulings" will make the move to the bigger-market and more recognizable series. Blount and Team 67, fresh off of back-to-back wins at Kansas Speedway and Kentucky Speedway, will not finish the remaining ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule.

Turner, Tiger Golfers Honored At Reception

Following a hall of fame career in which his teams never had a losing season and won 78 percent of all the matches they played, former Warsaw Community High School golf coach Bob Turner said his greatest accomplishment was sitting next to Ben Barkey Tuesday evening. Turner, who coached the Tigers for 29 seasons - 15 with the girls and 14 with the boys - coached Barkey, who graduated from WCHS in 1997 and who replaced Turner when he got out of coaching three years ago. Tuesday evening in the Tiger Den at WCHS, Turner and Barkey and the current Tiger boys golf team, which won the state championship at Legends of Indiana in Franklin last week, were honored by Mayor Ernie Wiggins, WCHS school officials and fans at a reception. After sitting there with Ben Barkey, assistant coach Curt Barkey - a 1996 WCHS grad and Ben's brother - and seniors Jake Brodhead, Jon Clevenger and Chris Hanson, Turner said there was closure to his career. He said the torch had been passed.

Leo Runs By Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY - Whitko played host to the Leo Lions Friday night in a rematch of last year's sectional game.Leo ran by the Wildcats 33-7. Leo drew first blood in the game. The Whitko defense held Leo on a fourth down play to take possession of the football on their 8-yard line.On the next play Leo's Lance Carey caught the fumble in the air and ran the eight yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after the kick. Whitko's offense was held to five yards in the first quarter. The Leo defense continually put pressure on the front line and were often in the backfield "We just didn't play well tonight. We were audibleizing on plays when we shouldn't have.We were just out of sync," Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger said. Leo ate up the clock with a sustained drive beginning at the end of the first quarter.Justin Woods of Leo ran for a three-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0.

Tiger Relay Teams Find Stride At Right Time

It was almost an overnight transformation. The Warsaw 1600 and 3200 relay teams went from average to dominant in 17 days. At the Northern Lakes Conference meet May 12, the 1600 relay team placed fourth, about what they expected. However, after winning the sectional, Warsaw placed second at the regional and is seeded fifth for Friday's IHSAA State meet. The 3200 relay team went through a similar transformation and is 10th. There are a number of reasons that can explain this sudden improvement. With three underclassmen on each relay, it can take a while to settle down and feel comfortable about running against bigger and stronger opponents. Also, injuries caused a lot of the troubles. The two relay teams had to adjust to new runners in many different ways, whether through handoffs or just knowing what to count on for each athlete during the race.

Caston Clubs Triton

BOURBON - Caston pounded out 254 yards on 39 carries while holding Triton to a dismal 107 yards on 30 attempts en route to a 43-0 win at home. The Comets scored 20 points in the first quarter to blow things wide open and they never looked back as they out gained the Trojans in total offense 353-137.Triton punted the ball five times for an average of 22 yards per attempt. Triton (0-1) will host Northfield on Friday.

Tigers Shoot Season-Best 188

One night after watching Huntington North's girls golf team blitz his team by 31 strokes, Warsaw coach Bob Turner was curious to see how his team would respond. After all, Huntington handed the Tigers their first loss. And these Tigers are essentially a new team this year - last year's top three starters graduated. They responded, all right. They responded by shooting their season-best score. They responded by blistering Tippecanoe Valley by 59 strokes in a Thursday match at Rozella Ford Golf Course, 188-247. And that's just the way Turner figured it would happen with his rebuilt 1997 team.

Tigers Finish Third In Rain-Soaked Golf State Finals

FRANKLIN - Sitting at a picnic table in a pavillion on the grounds at Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, second-year Warsaw coach Ben Barkey's three-word answer could have been both serious and humorous. "Anything can happen," Barkey said of Wednesday's second round of the 68th annual IHSAA boys golf state finals. It was one of those kind of days, where if one is to expect anything it should be the unexpected. Heavy rain storms delayed Wednesday's final round six hours, with Warsaw teeing off at 2 p.m.rather than 8 a.m.A total of nine teams, a trio of threesomes, competed in Wednesday's second round. Second-ranked Zionsville entered the day as the leader after posting a 292 Tuesday, followed by defeneding state champion and top-ranked Richmond six strokes back and Concord and Warsaw nine strokes back.

No. 18 Tiger Spikers Open Season

WABASH - For new Warsaw volleyball coach Jamie Byron, the first career win will always be important to her.But it might be win No.2 that will stick in her mind the most. After the Tigers disposed of Churubusco 15-12, 15-2 Tuesday, they had a little tougher time with Northfield in their second match of the night, before outlasting the Norse, 15-10, 15-12. In game one, Byron saw her Tigers fall behind 7-0 before coming back to outscore Northfield 15-3 and win the first game. "That will stand out in my mind the most," Byron said."In my first day coaching, the fact that we were down, and the fact that we came back and nobody gave up.

Warriors Move To Title Match

MIDDLEBURY - After starting this tennis season by splitting their first six matches, the Wawasee Warriors got in a groove. That groove began at the beginning of May and has now lasted 12 matches. In that span, Wawasee has won 11 times, including two victories against rival Warsaw and a third-place finish in the Northern Lakes Conference after finishing dead last the previous year.Tuesday, the Warriors added to their storybook season by winning their first-ever regional match, defeating DeKalb 4-1. The Warriors can now add that first regional win in school history to the other firsts they have attained this year - first sectional championship in school history and most wins.

Nine More Holes Of 'Fun' At Hepler's Raccoon Run

When PGA pro Denny Hepler acquired the nine-hole Stonehenge Executive Course in 1998 he renamed it Raccoon Run. He also came up with a catchy little slogan: "Raccoon Run, Where the Game is Fun." But anyone who's played Raccoon Run knows that a least a couple holes are a little more than just "fun."Other adjectives like "challenging" or "difficult" come to mind. That combination of fun, challenge and degree of difficulty continues with the addition of nine new holes set to open for play this Saturday. The process began in the spring of 1998 after Hepler, his wife, Cindy, and co-owners Dane and Mary Louise Miller were able to purchase 22 adjacent acres. "At first, we were going to take it slow," Hepler said, "but we had a dry spring in '98 so we decided to start right away." After he knew how much land he had to work with, Hepler walked off the yardages and began conceiving the layout.

All-Stars Invade Syracuse

SYRACUSE - The song that rang through the public address system at Wawasee High School the past four years, Shanna Zolman certainly went out in a "Blaze of Glory." Playing in front of a near sell-out crowd, Zolman, the 2002 Miss Basketball and state's all-time leading scorer for girls, was introduced to a standing ovation Wednesday night and then led the Indiana All-Stars to an 84-80 win over the Junior All-Stars on her home court. Wearing the same green arm-band she's worn since elementary school, the University of Tennessee-bound Zolman led all scorers with 27 points, as she played 37 of the game's 40 minutes.

Warsaw Player, Manager Headed To All-Star Football Game

He who had to sit out as Warsaw's football team played on its biggest stage, recent graduate William Knepper will stand tall Saturday. After three years of anchoring the Tiger defensive line for coach Phil Jensen, Knepper, who could only listen to the radio and wait for surgery on his torn ACL as Warsaw played in the sectional championship for the first time in school history, will end his prep career Saturday at Indianapolis North Central High School in the Methodist Sports Medicine North-South All-Star Football Classic. Saturday's game is slated to start at 1:30 p.m.The South, which won last year's contest 21-13, leads the overall series 20-16.

Sycamore's Griffing Wins Ping/Pepsi Series Event

Sycamore Golf Club's (North Manchester) Quinn Griffing took the title of the third and final event of the 1997 Ping/Pepsi Tournament Series Tuesday at the South Bend Country Club.Griffing posted a three-under par 68 for a one-shot victory. Griffing had birdies on No.12, 15 and 16 in heavy rain with his longest birdie putt of the front side on No.16 from 15 feet away.He went on to birdie No.2 and No.5 on his second nine, while also bogeying No.8 and No.13. "I just missed the wind on No.8," Griffing said."I hit a sandwedge and it fell short.I couldn't get up and down." In a two-way tie for second were Crooked Lake Golf Course's (Columbia City) Bill Schumaker and Stonehenge Executive Course's (Warsaw) Denny Hepler at 2-under 69. Schumaker got it to 4-under par at one point during his round, but started making bogeys and came up only 2-under.After a 1-over par first nine, Hepler came back with four birdies and a bogey on his second nine for a 3-under 33.

Warsaw Gets To Troyer, But Still Falls

ELKHART - Facing Goshen ace David Troyer, Warsaw would have gladly taken four runs. The Tigers got them. Unfortunately for Warsaw, though, pitching and defense seemed to be a different matter as Goshen ended the Tigers' eight-game winning streak with a 6-4 win in the Elkhart Memorial 4A Sectional Monday. The loss marks the third time this season that Warsaw (20-8) lost to Goshen (18-11) as the Redskins accounted for almost half of the Tigers' loss total this year. "Goshen got us three times," Warsaw coach Will Shepherd said."They aren't doing it with smoke and mirrors. They have a heck of a club.If you would have given me four runs at the start of this game, I would have been happy." Troyer has mowed down everybody in sight this season to the tune of a 10-1 record and an ERA below 1.00.But Warsaw was more than up to the challenge, at least early on.

Bellamy Jumps From The Sidelines To The State Finals

The boy first caught Rachel Etherington's eye last year in her physical education class. When the class played basketball, Warsaw sophomore Justin Bellamy jumped so high he grabbed rebounds above the rim.He stood a modest 6 feet, but he could dunk the basketball. You need to try out for basketball or the track team, Etherington told Bellamy. But Bellamy, who had not played organized athletics since elementary school and found trying to pass the 10th grade hard enough, ignored Etherington, who doubled as the school's assistant athletic director. Unfazed, Etherington continued to badger Bellamy.

Teel Takes TV Girls Coach Position

It was natural for Gary Teel to be the next girls varsity coach at Tippecanoe Valley. Although he has no varsity coaching experience and only one year coaching at the high school level, Teel is familiar with the Vikings' program - very familiar. Teel, who served as Valley's freshman girls coach last year, worked all summer with the returning talent in summer camps, workouts and biddy ball. So when Valley athletic director Duane Burkhart had to find a new coach after Mindy Metzger's sudden resignation July 29, Burkhart knew where to go. "He knows our kids," Burkhart said."He had a big part in our past summer program as far as working camp and open gyms.We thought it would make a smoother transition." Teel applied for the position at Valley before, and Burkhart knew that he was still interested in the job.

Whitko Advances To Sectional Final In Dramatic Fashion

SOUTH WHITLEY- After Whitko's dramatic 3-1 win over Peru, rife with late-inning heroics, the post game celebration resembled one reserved for championships. For all intents and purposes it is with Peru and Whitko considered the two best teams in the Whitko Sectional field.Whitko coach Marla Burkhart knows however that anything can happen but feels this year's team won't have a let down. "This team I don't have to worry about. They don't ever give up.They know anything can happen in any game, in any inning. We've come up against that this year and learned from it." Wednesday night's contest was a defensive struggle with both sides showing some range on defense.Whitko's Jacky Arnett saved an extra base hit in the bottom of the second when she dove on a hot shot to right by Crystal Callander to end the inning.Whitko, while on their home field, was listed as the visitor last night.

Two-Out Heroics Give Triton Sectional Title

LaCROSSE - Triton's baseball team made up for a forgettable first inning with an unforgettable last inning. Triton scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat LaCrosse 6-5 in Saturday's LaCrosse A Sectional. The Trojans (20-10) won their second straight sectional title, while LaCrosse ended the season 12-13. With two outs in a 5-5 game, Triton's Jake Burnett singled home Tyson Blackford from second to give the Trojans the win. "That's kind of the way we've been this year," Triton coach Jim Shively said of Triton's late-inning heroics."We've lost these kind before. In the tournament last year we lost one this way." For LaCrosse, the seventh inning started innocently enough as Triton's Matt Norman lined out to left field for the first out.But control problems that hurt LaCrosse starter Skyler Young earlier came back to haunt him with LaCrosse leading 5-4.
