Manchester Golf Team Searches For Consistency

NORTH MANCHESTER - First-year coach Jody Shewman looks only for the basic things as she tries to build a competitive golf team at Manchester. "We're very young," she says."The biggest thing we're going to work on is keeping our average down.Just learning more about the game - some of them aren't sure what to do here or what to do there." Manchester, which has five returners on its roster of seven, has had one practice this season.Heidi Wieland, Jodee Ruppel, Tasha Cox, Becky Marcum and Demara Knight are the returning golfers.Wieland is the only senior, so Shewman has a chance to build for the future. Katie Parker, a junior, is a newcomer.Parker plays basketball and softball, and now she's trying to add golf to her list.Shewman said Parker hasn't golfed much before, but she also said she has a good shot at being one of the five to make the varsity team.Shewman likes what she has seen from Parker after one practice.

Tiger Golfers Don't Survive State Cut

AVON -ÊMaybe it was nerves. Maybe it was the wind and the dry condition of the greens at Prestwick Golf Course. Maybe it just wasn't Warsaw's day. Whatever the reason, the Warsaw Tigers did not shoot their best 18 holes of golf Wednesday at the state finals in Avon. To advance to the final day of play at the state competition today, a team had to be within 20 strokes of the leader. The Tigers missed that mark by six strokes. Marion and Noblesville, the leaders at the end of Wednesday's first round of competition, finished the day with 309, but Warsaw's team score of 335 was not close enough to advance to today's portion of the tournament. The Tigers were one of six teams eliminated. The Tigers beat Marion at a tournament earlier this season. Just after the Tigers teed off Wednesday morning, coach Bob Turner voiced concern about the team's nerves.

Friend Bests Metzger Again

Silver Lake's Mike Metzger and Hastings, Minnesota's Gary Ries, both Super Semi pullers on the NTPA circuit, claim to be best friends. And as Metzger, owner of Metzger and Sons Trucking in Silver Lake, put it earlier in the week, Ries enjoys coming and showing Metzger up in front of his home crowd. And that is exactly what Ries did Friday night at the Kosciusko County Fair. Driving his Peterbilt nicknamed Stagecoach, Ries, the NTPA points champion in 1991 and '92, topped Metzger's pull-off round distance of 298 feet, 11 inches to take the win. "We had two good passes," Metzger said."The truck that won is good. He's a good friend of mine, and he's got a good truck. We've never won on the home track, and I'm not going to retire until I do." "That was my best run this year," Ries, who also drove the truck Longhorn that finished fourth."We've just had so many engine problems." Ries was also quick to point out that he beat Metzger on a recent fishing escapade.

South Shore hosted the annual Wawasee High School's Warrior Open athletic outing July 14. The event attracted 164 golfers and 41 teams in effort to raise money for the WHS athletic department.Although the bad weather that ripped through the area on that Monday put a damper on the finish of the event and sent the golfers scrambling for cover, tournament organizer Randy Aalbregtse said the money raised should be more than last year. Youth Served At State Golf Meet

PLAINFIELD - Although Wednesday's state golf meet first round will not go down as one of the greatest days in Kosciusko County high school golf history, it could be the building block for some impressive performances in the future. With six county golfers competing at the state meet, five of which will return to their respective teams next year, the meet at Prestwick Country Club was certainly one that will leave positive effects in the next few years. Wawasee's team impressed at the meet, falling just five strokes short of the cut, and Warsaw's Justin Howell gained some big meet experience. Although Howell shot just an 84, head coach Bob Turner was happy with how his golfer competed.

Wrobel Wins Round, Heads To County Fair

Under match play rules, where scores don't count and the winner is determined by number of holes won, Wrobel defeated her 15-year-old opponent 2-1. Wrobel, whose backyard is the sixth hole and who said she's still only played the course four or five times, won the first two holes by the same count, 6-5.She went on to win two more holes on the front nine, the 130-yard par 3 No.5 and the 511-yard par 5 No.9.On the ninth hole Gearhart lost her ball in the rough and after looking for nearly 10 minutes unsuccessfully, she forfeited the hole to Wrobel. The back nine was a different story altogether for Wrobel. After winning the 10th hole by one stroke, Wrobel put her fourth shot on the 460-yard par 5 No.11 in the water. In all she was five over par on the hole.Gearhart took the hole, going three over par. From holes 11-15, Wrobel won just one hole and Gearhart came back to tie the match.

K.C. Mustangs Open Inaugural Season Saturday

What started out as a dream now has Sid Phillips losing sleep. Call it nerves, call it excitement. Whatever it is, it's clear there will be some emotions Saturday afternoon. Phillips is the offensive coordinator for the newly-formed Kosciusko County Mustangs semi-pro football team. Saturday, the Mustangs, a member of the Interstate Football League, play their inaugural game, a contest with the visiting Hendricks County Generals. The game is slated for a 4:30 p.m.kickoff at Fisher Field at Lakeview Middle School. "They're ready to go," Phillips said Tuesday while the Mustangs practiced in the summer heat, much like many of them did in years past as area high school gridsters."They're ready to go hit someone." Barring practice and maybe a backyard football game here and there over the years, it's been quite some time since any of the Mustangs players have caught a touchdown pass, sacked a quarterback or recovered a fumble.

New Era In Warsaw Bowling

After a combined 70 years in the business, Mike and Deb Gilliam said they are happily unemployed. And while the business the Warsaw couple ran - Gilliam Lanes on Ind.15N - was sold and closed down during the spring, it will soon open under new ownership and management and with a new name. The Gilliams - Mike, 54 and Deb, 52 - sat down and talked for roughly an hour over Memorial Day weekend inside the silent bowling alley. They told stories of league play and friendship.Tales of a successful youth program and how two truckers drove from Chicago to participate in a league. They told the story of how Gale and Pam Estep held their wedding at Gilliam Lanes. "We always had great people working for us and Warsaw is a great place to raise a family," said Mike, who said one of his fondest memories of Gilliam Lanes - other than a large number of friendships made over the years - was when professional bowler Earl Anthony came to town for the day.

Red Farmer To Race For Warsaw's ML Motorsports

In the words of Red Farmer, old age and treachery beat youth and agression. Such is life for Farmer, who still lives in the fast lane, or more appropriately, in the racing groove. Born in Nashville, Tenn.- and don't ask when because he won't say - Farmer later took residence in Hueytown, Ala., where he still lives today, and is considered by many to be the greatest race car driver on dirt. An original member of the famed Alabama Gang, which included brothers Bobby and Donnie Allison and later Davey Allison, Bobby's son, and Neil Bonnett, Farmer has nearly 800 career feature wins. He's been enshrined in a laundry list of Halls of Fame and in 1999 was named to NASCAR's list of 50 Greatest Drivers. While many professional athletes leave their sport in the prime of their careers, or attempt to come out of retirement, Farmer hasn't retired yet and drives with the same passion he did when he drove his first race in 1949.

Monster Trucks Coming To Local Fair

Dave Harwood was to be a replacement for three shows.Four years later, the Syracuse native is still driving monster trucks for well-known team owner Paul Shafer. After five years of driving his own equipment and handling all the responsibilities that came with it - most notably paying the expensive engine and tire bills - 49-year-old Harwood was offered a full time driving opportunity with Shafer Motorsports. Filling that seat the past four years, Harwood has seen the country coast to coast. He's driven a monster truck in all but four states - Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington - and even driven in the West Indies. It's a show Monday evening at the Kosciusko County 4-H & Community Fair, which begins at 7 p.m.in the grandstand, that he's most excited about. The closest Harwood has driven to his hometown is the Elkhart County Fair in Goshen, and there hasn't been a monster truck show here at the fair in Warsaw in 10 years.
