Asked what he liked about Whitko, he said, “the professionalism.” Suding says he brings experience and expertise to Whitko. He taught social studies and coached football, wrestling and girls track at Muncie Central High School for 11 years, and served as assistant principal for eight years. He was also principal at Yorktown for six years before coming to Whitko. Norman Geible, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Merrell Geible, receives instruction at a miniature chalked-out railroad crossing from State Trooper, Don Sand of Warsaw. Floyd Hollar is the school principal; Jack Valentine and Gene Groninger are representing the Optimist Club. Mrs. Don Chilcote is the PTA president, with Mr. & Mrs. Keith Horn as next year’s co-presidents.  75 Years AgoPrizes in the Poppy Poster contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary were awarded to Louise Barber, first; Jerry Gerard, second; Jerry Lessig, third. There were 23 posters made by the Warsaw High School pupils art class supervised by Mrs. Tom Framer. The judges were Mrs. William Chinworth, Mrs. Victor Reafsnyder and Harold Crabil. These posters will be entered in the district poster contest. The American Legion annual stag party will be held at the Legion home May 17, 1938.

Tia and Tony Croy enjoyed the evening.Girl Scouts and their mothers or adult friends recognized Mother’s Day at the Syracuse Community Building by learning how to make corsages. Mrs. Charles Cox, hospitality chairman, will be the hostess for the evening.75 Years AgoKosciusko County tax collections from November 1937 to May 1938, total $373,088.27 as compared to collections of $444,877.42 collected during a similar period for the previous year. This shows a falling off of $71,789.19 in collections. One reason for the slump is because this year the taxing rate was reduced in 29 out of 31 taxing units in the county, according to County Treasurer Kelley. Total taxes collected for the 31 units is $363,844.92 including those for utilities, line fence assessments, cutting thistles, ditch clean-out, bonded ditches and bank tax.

10 Years AgoU.S. Army 1st Lt. John Frasure, 32, Milford, will be awarded the Bronze Star for his exceptional medical support during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He treated 43 wounded people during OIF as a member of Task Force 4-64, saving many lives. In March and April, Frasure, an Army physician assistant with Alpha Co., 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, treated U.S. troops, Iraqi civilians and enemy prisoners of war, often under enemy fire. The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to soldiers who distinguish themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement or service during military operations.25 Years AgoJefferson Elementary School teacher Elaine Hand, 1702 Willow Lane, Warsaw, is retiring after 26 years of teaching. She started in 1967. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from William Penn College and a master’s degree in elementary education from Indiana University.Rex Roth is the new superintendent of Triton School Corporation. A graduate of Milligan College in Tennessee, he earned his master’s degree and DDS at Indiana University. Roth was an elementary principal for 14 years at Shelbyville, and before that, an elementary school teacher at Bartholomew County Schools. 50 Years AgoKosciusko County businessmen selected Jack Wells, Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce, to represent the county in the Northeast Indiana Tourist Assistance Council. The name chosen for the group is “Kosciusko County Hospitality Organization.” The area meeting, attended by 105 persons from 16 counties in northeastern Indiana, was called by Lt. Gov. Richard Ristine. He called for formation of the 16-county area into a district so that it could become part of a state group to promote Indiana as a tourist center. He reported five of the seven districts in the state have been organized. “Average money spent by a man, his wife and two children on vacation in the United States is $35 a day.”75 Years AgoBecause their good neighbor, H.D. “Fode” Cormany, has been unable to work for the past year, 11 of his neighbors brought their tractors and plowed 54 acres of land and harrowed and cultipacked 26 of those acres in one single day this month. The Cormany farm is located 2-1/2 miles west of Leesburg. The work was sponsored by the Happy Prairie Club. Farmers include Harold McKibben, Albert Thomas, Luther McColley, Glen Grimm, Homer Murphy, Everett Bishop, Thomas Stackhouse, William Murphy, Bernis Stookey, Robert Bishop, Walter Shively, LeRoy Vanator and Garland Lowry. At the Cormany home, dinner was served to 23.

10 Years Ago October 27 1999 Old and new were celebrated Sunday at the Mentone Elementary School dedication. The new Mentone Elementary School incorporates the entrance of the old school into the new building with new classrooms. The school has kept 12 classrooms but expanded to 28 so there will be room for 650 students. 25 Years Ago October 27 1984 Try this recipe that came from a County Extension Office article published October 1984. Pumpkin Cheese Ball: One package (eight ounces) cream cheese, softened. 1/2 cup solid-pack pumpkin. One jar (2-1/2 ounces) dried beef slices, chopped. Two cups (eight ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese. 1/4 cups crushed pineapple (well drained). One tablespoon chopped onion. Short celery stalk. Parsley for garnish. Combine cream cheese and pumpkin, mixing until well blended. Stir in beef, cheese, pineapple and onion; mix well. Chill at least one hour. Form into large ball. Score sides with knife to resemble pumpkin. Garnish with celery for stem and parsley. Serve with crackers. Yields about 2-1/2 cups. 50 Years Ago October 27 1959 William (Bill) Hadley is the new president of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce, having been elected at a meeting of the board of directors. Hadley, vice president of the First National Bank, served as the chamber's vice president this past year. He succeeds retiring president Joe Mendenhall, a druggist. 75 Years Ago October 27 1934 Mrs. Jesse Eschbach and Miss Ina Stout returned from Ann Arbor, Mich., where they visited with the former's daughter, Sally Eschbach, who is a student at the University of Michigan.

Charles Frederick "Fred" Lursen,

MOBILE, Ala. — Charles Frederick "Fred" Lursen, 86, Mobile, Ala., and a native of Leesburg, died Aug. 4, 2017. Fred was a retired certified public accountant in his firm of Charles F. Lursen PC. He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, past president of National Association of Accountants in Indiana and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was blessed with 60 wonderful years of marriage to his loving wife, Betty, who passed away in 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John Lursen and Marie McKibbin Lursen; and his brother, Howard Lursen.  His survivors include six children: Vincent (Ellen) Lursen Sr., Moryne (Frank) Breckenridge, Joseph (Dawn) Lursen, Susan Lursen, Patrick (Renee) Lursen and Paulette Lursen; one sister, Ruth Hammond; nine grandchildren: Vincent Jr. (Kit), Matthew, Christina, J.C., Kathleen, Michael, Mary Beth, Daniel and Samantha; one great­-grandson, Vincent III; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.  A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Little Flower Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Aug. 19, with calling one hour prior.  ***** Memorials to Little Flower Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.  Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com.

James C. “Jay” Lancaster, 79, of Syracuse, passed away at 4:18 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

Katherine A. “Kay” Farrar,

Katherine A. “Kay” Farrar, 88, Warsaw, passed away at 1:31 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw. On Feb. 17, 1929, she was born in Detroit, Mich., to Carl and Marian Leathers Wilson. Kay was united in marriage to William “Bill” Farrar on Aug. 16, 1947, in Mt. Clemens, Mich. He preceded her in death Feb. 26, 2005. Kay graduated from Mt. Clemons High School, then graduated from Manchester College with a bachelor’s degree. She then graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, with a master’s degree. After moving to the Warsaw area, Kay became a teacher at Leesburg High School, where she taught high school speech and English and directed all of the junior and senior class plays. In 1967, she became a high school guidance counselor for Warsaw High School, where she also helped sponsor the cheerleaders’ squad.  Kay was a member of First United Methodist Church, Warsaw, where she was involved in the Thursday Circle and also the Thursday Morning Bible Study Group. She also was a member of the Eastern Star, Retired Teachers Association, past president of Home Extension Club and served as a CASA representative for several years. Kay also enjoyed playing bridge and participated in various bridge groups. She is survived by two daughters, Carol (spouse Pat) Ireland, North Manchester, and Jane (spouse Greg) Haney, Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.   Kay also was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Roesch; and two brothers, Charles Wilson and Al Moran. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 1, in First United Methodist Church, Warsaw, with Pastor Mark Need officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw. Robert E. “Bob” Bunch

Robert E. “Bob” Bunch, 75, passed away at 9:08 p.m. Monday, May 29, 2017, in Parkview Hospital Randallia, Fort Wayne. Bob was born in Vincennes on March 23, 1942, to William and Zola Creamer Bunch. He was a 1960 graduate of Elwood High School.  Vicki K. Niverson would become his bride April 16, 1960, in Lafayette. They would share almost 50 years together until her passing Dec. 16, 2009. Living most of his life in Warsaw, Bob was employed for 40 years with Owen’s grocery store. He retired in 2011 as its produce manager. He was a member of Warsaw Wesleyan Church. He liked old classic cars and enjoyed going to the old classic car shows. He also enjoyed gardening. Family members left with memories to treasure are his three daughters and their husbands: Natalie and Chris Gutkowski, Chesterton; Lisa and Max Elder, Pierceton; and Cheryle and Bruce Stouder, Warsaw; and a son, Richard Bunch, Leesburg; and eight grandchildren: Sara, Max, Landon, Jordan, Chase, Connor, Olivia and Derek. Also surviving are two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Fran Bunch, Springfield, Mo., and John and Linda Bunch, Chesterton. In addition to his wife, Vicki, he was preceded in passing by a son, Bobby Bunch, Oct. 20, 2000; and his sister, Becky Belle Bostic, March 19, 1976.  The family will receive guests for a time of sharing from  6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Titus Funeral Home.  A celebration of Bob’s life will take place Friday morning beginning at 10:30 at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Ronald “Ron” Konkle —pastor, evangelist and father — passed away unexpectedly from this earth and was ushered through heaven's gates at 5:25 a.m. July 22, 2018, from his Warsaw residence. Ron had been fighting multiple sclerosis for over 10 years and was 66 years old.
