Plymouth gets ugly win over Warsaw

HUNTINGTON - The Warsaw-Plymouth rivalry in the postseason didn't go out with a bang. No, the last installment of this seemingly annual battle in the regional was just a whimper of its predecessors of years' past.It didn't have the drama of last year's last-second regional championship win by Warsaw or even the offensive explosion of the regular season matchup between the two teams, won by Plymouth 87-66. Coming up with just enough plays, and one critical free throw, the Pilgrims ended the Tigers' stunning success this year with a 36-32 win in the first game of the Huntington Boys' Basketball Regional Saturday. Neither team really looked ready to take control of this game at any moment and both squads struggled to get anything going on offense, especially in the second half.

Hicks Leads Squires To First Regional Title

BUNKER HILL -ÊThe postseason could have two titles for Manchester's girls basketball team. One might be "Going Where No Squires Have Gone."Another could be "The Jessica Hicks Coming Out Party." Whatever.Manchester continues to win, and Hicks continues to fuel the Squires, and they captured the school's first regional title by lashing Lewis Cass 67-48 in Saturday's 2A Maconaquah Regional.Manchester, No.9 in the last poll, led from start to finish and improved to 20-3.Cass, ranked No.10, ended the season 18-5. Hicks tallied a season-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting and snared 10 rebounds. This from a freshman who averaged six points and six rebounds per game during the regular season.

Vikings Record Rare Win

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊTippecanoe Valley's girls tennis team has beaten Manchester only once or twice in school history. The Vikings added one more victory to that list Wednesday evening when they defeated the Squires 4-1. "We were solid up and down the line," said Valley coach Jack Shambaugh."This is only the second or third time we have ever beaten Manchester." The Valley squad started the evening by winning every match in the varsity singles competition. Carissa Parker defeated Allison Ingold at the number one spot 6-1, 6-0, and at the number two slot, Wendy Tilden beat Rachel Bushong by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.At number three singles, Valley's Abby Lewis downed Molly McWhitney 6-1, 6-1. Manchester's lone win came at the number one doubles spot as Katrina Runkle and Carmen DeFusco defeated Tiffany Cunningham and Erin Drudge 6-2, 6-4.

Warsaw Downs Plymouth 3-2

Going into Tuesday's tennis match against Plymouth, the Warsaw Tigers knew they had their work cut out for them. The Pilgrims defeated Warsaw handily last year, but the Tigers surprised Plymouth and avenged that loss with a 3-2 win. "I am really proud of our effort tonight," said Warsaw coach Mike Baber."Last year the team lost 5-0 or 4-1 to Plymouth, so this 3-2 win is big for the girls." But the win was not a simple matter for the Tigers. The match went down to the wire as the final varsity contest determined which team was victorious. Angie Suchecki and Tracey Yoder teamed up at the No.2 doubles position to earn Warsaw's first point of the evening. The Warsaw pair defeated Plymouth's Cari Reed and Lindsay Houin 6-3, 6-2. Kara Kesler and Liza Weidenbenner teamed up at the No.1 doubles slot to get Warsaw's next victory. They defeated Plymouth's Liz Adams and Jenny Pettibone 6-2 in the first set, but the second set was not a cakewalk.

No. 1 Bethel Bounces Grace

Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union Grace's Ben Elliott (33) shoots over the defense of Bethel's Randy Romer Saturday during the MCC semifinals. MISHAWAKA - Grace won the battle of the tempo with No.1 Bethel, but the Pilots still won the war. In an attempt to slow down the high-scoring Pilots, the Lancers used a game plan of using time on offense and solid defense to keep the score low, which would give them a better chance of upsetting the three-time defending Mid-Central Conference champions. It almost worked, but the Lancers couldn't overcome a 15-point halftime deficit and fell to the Pilots, 80-65, in the MCC semifinals Saturday.

Dome Starts - And Finishes - Marathon

Last week's Boston Marathon had a local connection.Susan Dome, a 1997 Whitko High School graduate, ran the race and placed 6,562nd out of 17,813 runners. She was the 917th woman to cross the finish line as well. After running cross country and track in middle school and high school at Whitko, Dome decided to take some time off when she started studying biology at Purdue University in West Lafayette. "I took about a year off, and then last May I ran a mini-marathon in Indianapolis," said Dome."I did OK there, so I decided that I might run a full marathon.I had always wanted to run a marathon. "I had some friends who were running the Chicago Marathon and they asked me to run it with them, so I did." However, Dome did not decide to run the Chicago Marathon until September. The race was in October, so she did not have much time to prepare.

Wawasee Tennis Team Finishes Strong In 4-1 Win

SYRACUSE -ÊBefore Thursday's tennis match against Northern Lakes Conference opponent NorthWood, Wawasee coach Phil Mishler told his team to start and finish strong. "We talked about starting strong and finishing strong," said Mishler."In previous efforts, one of our doubles groups started out strong and finished strong while the other started out weak and tried to finish strong when it was too late. "We were mentally ready from the first handshake to start the match to the handshake after the match. The team was very focused today." Laura Lundin started the night on the right foot for the Warriors. She defeated NorthWood's Jessica McCarthy in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at the No.3 singles slot. Then in the only match that went three sets, Wawasee's No.2 doubles pair of Ashley Bell and Andrea Sands paired up against NorthWood's Nicole Fishbury and Andrea Atkinson. After dropping the first set 6-0, Sands and Bell fought back to win the final two sets 6-4 and 6-1.

Tigers Play Little Ball In Win

Syracuse -ÊEven though the game was not billed as such, it was "Turn Back the Clock Day" Wednesday at Wawasee High School.Ê Warsaw manager Will Shepherd borrowed a page from the playbook of a manager from a foregone, but not forgotten, era, to secure an 8-3 conference victoryÊ over the host Warriors. Former New York Giants manager John McGraw (1902-32) believed baseball in its purist aspects, stealing bases, taking advantage of untimely errors and moving runners over by means of laying down a sacrifice bunt.ÊÊ "Normally I hate to give up an out, especially when you only get 21 a game" said Shepherd.

Eagles Stun Panthers

NAPPANEE -ÊGoing into Wednesday night's NorthWood Regional against the Columbia City Eagles, the Panthers were considered the favorites. One just had to look at NorthWood's overall record, its senior returners and its record at home to see why. The Panthers had an 18-5 overall record, while Columbia City was just 12-10. The Panthers had a core of experienced senior players, while Columbia City had just two seniors on the roster. The Panthers were undefeated on their home court. But on any given night, any team can come through for a victory, and Columbia City's boys basketball team did just that shocking the NorthWood Panthers 52-47. NorthWood jumped out to the early lead as Robbie Lightfoot drained a three-pointers to open the game. But Columbia City's Ryan Boylan answered with a trey for the Eagles to knot the score at 3-all. After the Panthers and Eagles traded three-pointers to start the game, they traded turnovers as well.

Area Netters Ready To Get To The Courts

For some area high school girls' tennis teams, the lineups are completely set.For others, well let's just say they are still working on it. With most of the area teams entering this season with young teams, the preseason is a time to compete for the open spots. A look at the area tennis teams appears below. Warsaw Tigers Warsaw will have to replace several key players from last year's 19-3 squad, but first-year coach Jeanine Glunt thinks she has an ace up her sleeve. Although only three of the seven players played varsity last year, four of the girls on this year's squad have played tennis all-year round in tennis clinics and at the racquet club.

Whitko Softball Wins Big On Senior Night

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊSenior night was good to Whitko pitcher Stacy Socha. Not only is Socha a senior, but she tossed a one-hitter to lead the Wildcats to a 23-0 win over Three Rivers Conference opponent Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday night in South Whitley. "Stacy did a fantastic job," said Whitko coach Marla Burkhart."She allowed just one hit and one walk. She is pitching very well." Due to a gas leak at Tippecanoe Valley High School and the resulting evacuation, the Vikings arrived in South Whitley later than expected.Once the Valley squad was allowed to get its equipment from inside the school, the Vikings were on their way to South Whitley for the TRC matchup. Although the game started late, the Wildcats jumped out to a lead early. In the bottom of the first inning, the Whitko squad took control. After the first batter, Jana Rowland, reached base on an error, Dana Sellers moved to first base on a walk. Then another error allowed Hannah VanHoozen to reach base.

Tiger Baseball Team Shuts Out Panthers

A game in which 80-degree temperatures and sunny skies gave way to windy conditions and darkening clouds, senior pitcher Nathaniel Fitzsimmons was a constant bright spot for Warsaw's varsity baseball team Wednesday afternoon. Fitzsimmons has struggled on the mound this season as a reliever, so Tiger skipper Will Shepherd decided to try him as a starter against visiting Northern Lakes Conference opponent NorthWood. Shepherd got the response he was looking for, as Fitzsimmons, who missed his sophomore and junior seasons with a knee injury, scattered five hits in seven innings of work and pitched the Tigers to a 4-0 win over the Panthers.

Vikings Capture First TRC Win

AKRON -ÊThe Tippecanoe Valley Vikings went searching for their first Three Rivers Conference win Friday and they received just that.Behind good pitching and timely hitting, the Vikings were able to knock off the Whitko Wildcats 5-3 in weather that was aptly suited for the Hound of the Baskervilles. A constant drizzle and foggy conditions coupled with U.S Open rough-like outfield grass made for less than optimum conditions for both teams as Valley coach Scott Backus explained, "the conditions were equal for both teams, so there was no advantage...but it was hard to keep the balls dry."But Valley must have been more immune to them given the result of the game. Both teams played to a 0-0 stalemate through the first 5 1/2 innings until Valley was able to open up, what seemed at the time, a comfortable lead of 5-0.

Tigers Outlast NorthWood 2-1

NAPPANEE -ÊIn the big leagues, a baseball game normally lasts nine innings. However, high school games are usually slated for only seven. Wednesday night in Nappanee, NorthWood and Warsaw decided to play like the big boys and went a full nine innings before the game was finally decided. After all was said and done, the Tigers came out on top 2-1 to improve to 7-2 in Northern Lakes Conference play, but the win did not come easily for Warsaw. Mike Barger of Warsaw and Jesse Hoover of NorthWood were the stars of the show for most of the game, putting on a pitching performance of rare caliber. In the first three innings, Hoover struck out five Tiger batters and allowed just two men to reach base, one on a single and one on an error.Barger fanned one Panther and did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the third. "This was a great pitching game," said NorthWood coach Doug Gerber.

Warsaw Batters Have Grand Time In Beating Goshen

The Warsaw Tigers baseball team kicked off its Triple Crown part of the season with an 11-0 five-inning pasting of Goshen.Ê After Wednesday's victory over Wawasee, Warsaw coach Will Shepherd stressed the importance of the next three games: Goshen, Fort Wayne Northrop, and Plymouth. "This weekend is important for our psyche," said an elated Shepherd."If we continue to play hard and be mentally tough, we'll be OK." Mentally tough was indeed what the Tigers needed in order to escape Goshen's half of the first inning. After Tiger pitcher Adam Augustine struck out the first two batters, Goshen proceeded to load the bases based in part by a mental error by Warsaw thirdbaseman Trent Martin.
